18 Best One Piece Theories That Will Blow Your Mind
18 Best One Piece Theories That Will Blow Your Mind

One Piece is full of unanswered questions and mysteries, not to mention a multitude of secret characters. Fans have been speculating about various aspects of One Piece's story for ages, leading to some rather interesting and downright crazy possibilities. Stick around for some of the best One Piece theories that will blow your mind—many of which may be far more plausible than you'd expect!
18. The Gorosei lived through the empty century
A shocking possibility, though with little evidence, is that the Gorosei elders were present during the Void Century. This theory suggests they are essentially immortal, perhaps due to the power of Jewelry Bonney.

Some fans believe that if this were the case, it would make them responsible for the demise of the Ancient Kingdom. However, given the complexity of One Piece's politics, it's also possible that they played an entirely different role.
17. Usopp's Lies Come True (Descendant of Noland's Theory)
Fans who have analyzed the entirety of One Piece's story have discovered that while Usopp tends to lie a lot (the long nose is a nice touch), his lies often come true later. The most notable examples of this phenomenon are:

- Usopp said that pirates were attacking the village, and the pirates attacked the village when he was introduced.
- Usopp said he knew about giants, after which he met giants.
- Usopp stated that he found an island, but it was actually giant goldfish droppings, and the giant goldfish was later revealed.
- Usopp stated that he had an army of a thousand pirates under his command, and a swarm of pirates believed him to be a god at one point.
Usopp also stated that he was a descendant of Noland, which supports a divergent theory. Besides Luffy becoming convinced that Noland and Usopp were the same person, it was revealed that most of Noland's descendants don't know they are related. However, they all feel an irresistible pull towards the sea, and this pull is confirmed by Usopp—it's quite possible that he is a descendant of Noland, especially since his lies tend to be true.
16. Cerberus Blackbeard Theory
A common theory concerns how Blackbeard ate three Devil Fruits. A popular theory within this complex states that before Blackbeard acquired the Black Fruit and the Quake Quake Fruit, he may have eaten a Mythical Zoan Devil Fruit that transformed him into Cerberus.
Cerberus beings have three heads according to mythology, meaning Blackbeard could eat two more Devil Fruits without suffering the same fate as others who ate more than one. However, some fans believe this is linked to a different theory—that Blackbeard suffers from a condition known as "fetus in fetu" and therefore has two siblings inside him.

The theory is supported by images of triads associated with Blackbeard, such as the Jolly Roger from The Blackbeard Pirates, which features three conjoined skulls. Another example is the three diagonal scars over Shanks's left eye, inflicted by Blackbeard.
15. Blackbeard is a half-octopus-fishman
The reasons why Blackbeard's pirate flag has three skulls, why he can have multiple Devil Fruits, and why he hasn't slept in his entire life have long been debated. The most common theory to explain these mysteries is that Blackbeard ate the fruit model of Cerberus, an imaginary giant three-headed dog. However, Marco's words, "The very structure of his body is strange," or Buggy's words, "He's never slept in his life," all point to the fact that he was born in an unusual way.
The new theory is that Blackbeard is half octopus, half fish-man. The octopus has three hearts and eight legs. Blackbeard's pirate flag features three skulls and eight bones.
Maybe Blackbeard also has 3 hearts, and that's why Marco said, "His body structure is unusual," and why Blackbeard can have multiple Devil Fruits. This theory will also explain why Blackbeard wouldn't have slept in his life...
14. Mihawk is the son of Rayleigh and Shakky
Dracule "Hawk Eyes" Mihawk is shrouded in mystery, with countless fans wondering who his parents could be. While there is no proof, many fans believe that Mihawk's parents could be none other than Silvers Rayleigh and Shakuyaku.

Mihawk shares a similar style and fashion sense to Shakuyaku, but there are also connections between his birth name and Rayleigh. Furthermore, if you do the math, Rayleigh would have been 35 and Shakuyaku would have been 21 at the time of Mihawk's birth, making this a plausible theory.
13. The theory of ancient weapons
The Void Century's ancient weapons, Poseidon, Pluto, and Uranus, have been a hot topic among fans since their reveal, shrouded in mystery for both viewers and the main characters of One Piece. While many have speculated that these ancient weapons originate from Greek mythology, fans believe it's more likely that they represent the planets themselves.

However, the ancient weapons may actually be intended to be used against the World Government. This may explain why the World Government has banned all research into the Poneglyphs, ancient weapons, and the Void Century.
12. Kaido is the father of the Charlotte triplets
Oven, Katakuri, and Daifuku are only three of Charlotte's children, but they are revealed to be triplets—parented by Big Mom. However, there is very little information regarding their father.

Some fans believe that the father of Charlotte's triplets could be none other than Kaido of the Beasts, mainly since Kaido and Big Mom were part of the Rocks 40 years earlier. But the main piece of evidence is an ambiguous conversation between Kaido and Big Mom in Chapter 907—where Big Mom tells Kaido he owes her a large debt, which fans have interpreted as "unpaid child support."

There are notable similarities between Kaido and Charlotte Katakuri, such as their fashion sense and love of skull tattoos, while Oven's spiky beard and Daifuku's stringy mustache are reminiscent of their presumed father's facial hair. However, it's also worth noting that the same scene may be linked to an entirely different theory, which states that Big Mom used her powers to make Kaido invincible—hence the debt.
11. Big Mom's Many Children
Another strange theory regarding Big Mom's children is that Big Mom accelerates the development of her babies in her womb by applying her spiritual abilities to the fetus. Alternatively, this may be because she shortened their lifespan to speed up the process.

Either way, this theory is as mind-blowing as it is disturbing. It definitely gives a whole new meaning to the name "Big Mom."
10. Shanks the Keeper of Secrets
Shanks has been a secretive figure for ages, though many theories concern Shanks's past (discussed in One Piece Film: Red), as well as Shanks's romantic interests and children. It has gotten to the point where some One Piece fans have begun to believe that Shanks is actually evil. However, there are theories about what Shanks might actually be up to—the most believable being Shanks' Observation Haki.

Shanks is believed to be able to see further into the future and with more accuracy than fans expected. Whether it's thanks to his Observation Haki or years of travel, Shanks certainly knows more than he lets on. His shady dealings could be about maintaining the balance of power and keeping history unknown as well—a possible history that could spark a massive war.
Shanks may be watching over the New World and ensuring that the Poneglyphs containing the forbidden secrets of the Void Age remain undeciphered. Whitebeard reveals in his final moments that the discovery of One Piece will turn the world upside down, which could serve as a motive for Shanks' actions within this theory. This would also explain why Gorosei wants the New World to be ruled by outlaw pirates instead of the World Government.
9. The theory of inherited will
The inherited will theory is probably the most well-supported One Piece theory. It's incredibly complex, with links to various aspects of One Piece's history, but it may explain why there's all the fuss about One Piece being discovered—supposedly the weapon that can finish the job.

This suggests that Roger inherited the will to unite the four seas into a single vast ocean. This would involve destroying the Red Line to create the All-Blue, potentially using the Ancient Weapons, banned by the World Government.
However, Roger fell ill and was unable to complete the task, instead triggering the Golden Age of Piracy so that another pirate could continue the mission. There is tons of evidence to support this theory, but the most notable occurs in Chapter 610, where the mermaid Madame Shyarly imagined Luffy destroying Fishman Island—which could only happen if the Red Line was destroyed.
8. Monkey D. Dragon is a former Marine
An interesting theory is that Monkey D. Dragon was a marine in the One Piece universe. Oda is quite infamous for incorporating myths, legends, and folklore into One Piece, which can be used as a basis for this theory.
Fans have linked this to the Chinese mythological representation of the four seas – North, South, East, and West. The seas are represented by yellow, blue, white, and red, and have also been identified by animals over time: a monkey, a bird, a dragon, and a dog.

If the North Sea (yellow, monkey) were to be associated with Admiral Kizaru, the South Sea (blue, bird) with Admiral Aokiji, and the West Sea (red, dog) with Admiral Akainu, that would leave the East Sea. This would go with Admiral "White Dragon"—who would be Monkey D. Dragon, according to the theory.
Another fable that could also support this theory is a story about a king with four followers: a bird, a monkey, a dog, and a pheasant. The bird left after realizing the king was wicked and told his comrades the truth, but the others decided to stay for different reasons. The story is related to Chinese mythology and could indicate that Dragon left his position as admiral after seeing how corrupt the world government was.
7. Numbered Devil Fruits
The Numbered Devil Fruits theory wouldn't change the entire perception of the One Piece universe. But it's mind-boggling considering that this theory, if proven true, would have been right under the noses of One Piece fans the entire time.

Many fans have been speculating for ages about who would join the Straw Hat Pirates, and one curious fan shared some interesting information in Oda's Q&A section for One Piece titled SBS Volume 59, stating:
"D: Odacchi! I noticed something amazing!!! The thing is, if you show the Straw Hat Devil Fruit users in numbers, they'll be the numbers 1 to 10!!
This refers to how the Japanese names of the Straw Hat Pirates' Devil Fruits range from 1 to 10. Oda apparently responded with the following ambiguous statement:
"WHAAAAAAT?! (shock) My God, that surprised me! Why was I surprised?! NO COMMENTSTTTTTT!!!!!!!! NEXT!!"
Using the Japanese name for Luffy's Devil Fruit (Gomu Gomu no Mi), "Go" would be the Sino-Japanese number for 5, while "Mu" is the native-Japanese number, meaning that Gomu Gomu no Mi would be "5.6.5.6". The Devil Fruit numbers of some other Straw Hat members would be as follows:
- Chopper: Hito Hito (1.10.1.10)
- Robin: Hana Hana (8.7.8.7.)
- Stream: Yomi Yomi (4.3.4.3.)
All this theory would leave out is one Devil Fruit user, which would be "2.9." The numbers also add up to an interesting reference with this theory – 6 (Gomu) + 110 (Hito) + 87 (Hana) + 43 (Yomi) + 29 (Nikyu) = 325, which could also mean "San" (3) "Ni" (2) "Go" (5), a possible nod to the Thousand Sunny.
6. The giant straw is linked to Uranus
The giant straw hat found frozen bears a remarkable resemblance to Luffy's, originally revealed in Chapter 906. During the Dressrosa arc, Donquixote Doflamingo mentions the national treasure of Mary Geoise – explaining that it would "shake the world to its core if made public."

While there's no confirmation that the national treasure in question is the Giant Straw Hat, the scene appeared shortly after the discussion. Because of this statement, many fans believe the Straw Hat could be Uranus's ancient weapon.
However, most believe it is only connected to the Ancient Weapon Uranus, either by hiding a secret message or in some other capacity. The Ancient Weapons Poseidon and Pluto were revealed to be a mermaid princess and a colossal battleship, leaving a huge gap regarding the Ancient Weapon Uranus—a gap into which a giant Straw Hat could well fit.
5. Joyboy ruled the ancient kingdom
Robin seems to be the only one who can interpret the mysterious poneglyphs, and she discovers something interesting during the Fisherman Island arc. Robin discovers a poneglyph inscribed with "Joyboy's" apology to a "mermaid princess," which turns out to be the ancient weapon Poseidon.

Fans began to speculate that Joyboy was the ruler of the Ancient Kingdom, which could also be inspired by a Javanese king named Jayabaya/Joyoboyo. Joyoboyo predicted the fall of his kingdom and recorded its history accordingly, similar to the poneglyphs of the ancient kingdom.
Joyoboyo also predicted that a chosen one named Ratu Adil would restore balance to the world in the future. In the One Piece universe, this could make Luffy the chosen hero.
4. Raftel is the Ancient Kingdom
The Ohara scholars identified the name of the ancient kingdom before their deaths, after which the Gorosei concealed it. After the Straw Hats meet Rayleigh, he explains that Gol D. Roger and his crew found Raftel and also discovered the secret of the Void Age and the Ancient Kingdom.

Whitebeard's final statement about the discovery of One Piece, which shook the world, was also used for this theory. While it is possible that Raftel holds secrets related to the Ancient Kingdom, some fans believe that Raftel Island and the Ancient Kingdom are one and the same.
3. One Piece is on the Moon
This One Piece theory was left for last because it's absolutely wild—while it doesn't have a lot of supporters, it certainly has a lot more evidence than you'd expect. This theory is incredibly intense, spanning One Piece's story since the Skypiea arc (where Robin encounters Shandora City and finds clues about an ancient civilization that has "fallen")—but it essentially revolves around the true story coming from outside space and the One Piece treasure residing on the moon.
It may sound crazy, but there are many details that support this theory—or at least some variations of it. It ties into major fan theories and mysteries, including the secrets of the Poneglyphs, the Void Century, the World Government's secret agenda, the origins of the Celestial Dragons, the ancient civilization of Shandora, and the Will of D. Since there are so many aspects of this theory to cover, we've summarized the most important notes below.
Eneru's Great Space Mission tells the story of how Eneru flew to the moon, presenting information about an ancient race of beings called "Mooninites." This confirms that there was life on the moon in One Piece, featuring beings with different hairstyles and wings.

These same visual references are depicted throughout One Piece's storyline, hinting at descendants falling to Earth and living among humans. This is said to stem from an attack on their civilization—either using ancient weapons of mass destruction or in a struggle for control over them, with their names referring to their interstellar origins (rather than Greek mythology).

With this theory, the attackers left behind would later become a bloodline known as the Celestial Dragons, which would explain why the Celestial Dragons have political hang-ups in the One Piece universe. It would also explain why the World Government is so opposed to deciphering the Poneglyphs.
On the other hand, the Mooninites' descendants would have grown up and procreated with humans to create a new lineage. These would be characters with "D" in the name, which refers to "The Will of D" and resembles half a moon—referring to half-lunar, half-human descendants.
While this theory does exist, it began to gain traction after Oda released the cover below, depicting Luffy with wings. Could this be a more "canonical" reference to Luffy being a descendant of the Mooninites, destined to overthrow the World Government and restore harmony to the world? Only time will tell.

These are all the craziest and most mind-blowing One Piece theories so far, with images courtesy of Screenrant, Anime Underground Ranker, and dedicated fans on Reddit and Quora. While there's nothing solid to confirm any of these theories, it's definitely fun piecing together small details to fill in some of the more confusing gaps. That being said, Oda isn't shy about teasing fans with ambiguous answers, so there may be a lot more truth to some of these theories than fans might expect.
2. Luffy's Gear 5 (Nika) was planned from chapter 1
We discovered that the Gomu Gomu fruit was actually the Nika model of the Hito Hito fruit. Would you believe me if I said Oda had this planned as early as Chapter 1? Luffy is a character based on a Hindu god called Hanuman.
You can see that Hanuman and Luffy have the same outfit, but that's just the beginning. Here are some similarities between Luffy and Hanuman.

- Hanuman is the Monkey God. Luffy's name is Monkey. D. Luffy.
- Hanuman won't be harmed by thunder and can change his body size. Same with Luffy.
- Hanuman's brother is Agni, the God of Fire. And Agni is a two-faced god. Luffy has two brothers, both of whom have the power of the Mera Mera Fruit.
In one of the tales, Hanuman mistakes the sun for a fruit and tries to eat it. This ties in with how Luffy mistook the Sun God's Devil Fruit, Nika, for a fruit. Oda already decided in Chapter 1 that the Gomu Gomu fruit would be linked to the power of the sun when he made this connection to the tale of Hanuman.

1. Shanks is the son of IM Sama
In the latest film, ONE PIECE FILM RED, Oda revealed that Shanks was found in God Valley. 38 years ago, Rocks attacked the Heavenly Dragons of God Valley, and that's when Gol. D. Roger and Garp joined forces to take down Rocks. After this battle, Roger found baby Shanks in one of the treasure chests he had taken with him.
There is a good chance that IM sama was in God Valley when this battle took place and that Shanks is IM sama's son who was left behind in God Valley.
First, Rocks' ambition was to become the king of the world. Perhaps he discovered the existence of IM Sama and attempted to conquer IM Sama's world. Furthermore, the islands that were erased from the map (Ohara, God Valley, Lulusia) all have something to do with the World Government's taboo. Perhaps this is why Shanks cried when he heard something from Roger...
