About Ash Ketchum

Ash Ketchum is a ten-year-old boy from Pallet Town who hopes to one day become the world's greatest Pokémon Master. Pikachu Ash travels the world catching new Pokémon, meeting new friends, and taking on new challenges.

Background

After oversleeping on the first day of his Pokémon journey, Ash was given the stubborn, yet strangely powerful Pokémon Pikachu. After some initial resistance, Ash and Pikachu became close as Pokémon and Trainer. They travel together on Ash's quest to challenge and defeat Gym Leaders across regions of the Pokémon universe. Along the way, Ash meets other Trainers who decide to travel with him. Ash often displays rash and thoughtless behavior, leading him to rush into dangerous and foolish situations. However, he cares more for his Pokémon and friends than himself, which makes him a remarkable Pokémon Trainer. Ash has been the main substitute protagonist of the anime since the first episode of the anime in 1997.

SKILLS

At the beginning of the series, Ash often stumbled due to a lack of knowledge on his Pokémon journey. With the help of others, Ash learned about type matching, battle strategy, and the importance of caring for his Pokémon. His learning process serves to introduce anime viewers to the mechanics used in the game. His role as an educational substitute leads Ash to suffer a "reset" of knowledge with each new generation. However, as the series progresses, Ash begins to develop greater skills with each challenge. In the XYZ anime, he finished first runner-up in the Kalos Pokémon Tournament. After more than 20 years, Ash finally won his first Pokémon Tournament in the Sun & Moon anime.

Other important Pokémon characters

Throughout his journey, Ash develops lasting friendships with other Trainers wherever he goes. While his traveling companions evolve with generations of players, Ash's original team created the template for future companions.

Foggy

Misty is a Water-type Pokémon Trainer and the younger sister of the Cerulean City Pokémon Gym. Ash meets Misty on the first day of his journey when he "borrows" her bike to escape a mob of violent Pokémon. After trashing her bike, Misty follows him and demands that he buy her a new bike or she won't leave. The running gag of Ash destroying his partner's bike upon their meeting continued for a few generations. Misty is cheeky, temperamental, and quite boyish in appearance. She and Ash bicker for most of their time together, though it becomes more playful than angry over time. After traveling two regions together, Misty returns home to the Cerulean Gym to take over as the official Gym Leader.

Brock

Brock is the former Pewter City Gym Leader and an aspiring Pokémon breeder. Brock joins Ash on his journey after his long-absent father returns to run the Pewter Gym and care for his large brood of children. After years of caring for his younger siblings, Brock has developed a responsible and caring personality. However, he also has an eye for pretty girls and unsuccessfully flirts with every girl the group meets on their journey. Brock travels with Ash longer than any other companion, staying in four different regions. Instead of following Ash to Unova, Brock decided to stay in their home region of Kanto to begin studies as a Pokémon Doctor.

Jessie

Jessie is part of one of the main criminal groups in the series, Team Rocket. She and her partners, James and Meowth, aim to steal Ash's Pikachu for their boss, hoping to get a promotion in return. Due to her aggressive nature, Jessie often takes on the role of leader during Team Rocket's schemes. However, the group's overall incompetence leads them to repeatedly fail as the comic relief in the series. Jessie grew up in a very poor household and often had to take care of herself. As an adult, she acts very selfishly and will seemingly do anything to get ahead. Appearing in almost every episode of the anime, the Team Rocket trio has gained immense popularity despite their status as villains.

Jacques

James is a member of the Team Rocket trio along with Jessie and Meowth. James's more reserved nature leads him to follow Jessie and Meowth's plans rather than stand up for his own beliefs. He grew up in an incredibly wealthy family that he found stifling, especially after his arranged engagement to the smothering Jessibelle. He ran away from home and eventually joined Team Rocket while looking for a place to fit in. Of all the characters in the series, James forms one of the closest bonds with his Pokémon. A running gag in the series involves James suffering when his Pokémon show him affection.
