Yuuki Asuna is a main character in the Sword Art Online series and one of the 10,000 players trapped in the game world. After realizing that she would be forever trapped in the game until it was completed, she did her best to play as a Clearer player, knowing that every day spent in the virtual world is a real day lost in the physical world. This attitude would continue until her reunion with Kirito on the front lines, where he was found resting and enjoying the nice weather on one of the game's upper floors. Their time together would increase given the strange events they encountered in the near future, strengthening their existing camaraderie into a more serious relationship.

Asuna has long, corvette-orange hair that reaches down to her waist.
Equipped with a rapier, and in combination with her extreme skill with the blade, she earned the nickname "The Flash".

After joining the Knights of the Blood , her armor style was designed to match that of the guild's signature white and red color scheme, inspired by the Templars. Dressed in a long white combat uniform, a red skirt, and white ankle socks, her uniform bore the guild's insignia in various places.

After being rescued in ALfheim Online and the game's expansion in New Alfheim Online, Asuna transferred her Sword Art Online avatar into the game, keeping most of her appearance the same but changing her hair color to blue. As a merfolk fairy, she became adept at supporting magic, but in addition to using her rapier skills from Sword Art Online, she became known as the Beserk Healer.

Asuna became the sub-leader of the Clearing Knights of the Blood guild. While led by Heathcliff, he rarely gave full leadership, requiring Asuna and other sub-leaders to maintain the guild. After falling in love with Kirito, or at least spending much more time with him during the day, she would value her time spent with him more over the guild's guidelines. After an event involving one of the guild members, a Laughing Coffin double agent would attack Kirito during a guild training mission, Asuna would join Kirito on leave, thus ending all her leadership duties. This would last until Heathcliff summoned them to the guild headquarters regarding what would become the final boss fight of Sword Art Online.

After the events of Sword Art Online, Asuna was one of the 300 players left trapped in the virtual world of ALfheim Online. As her fiancé, Sugou Nobuyuki, controlled the capture and experimentation of players, he specifically locked Asuna in the game as he planned to marry her while she remained unconscious. Nobuyuki gave her the in-game role of Fairy Queen Titania, as he himself played the role of Fairy King Oberon, as they lived at the top of the game's world tree. A group of players miraculously photographed her performing an impressive flying feat; a photo would eventually be emailed to Kirito, prompting him to rescue her by any means necessary in ALfheim Online.

History

Asuna is the daughter of RECT Inc. CEO Yuuki Shouzou, the company that developed the NerveGear alongside Argus. Prior to the events of Sword Art Online, she had been married to Sugou Nobuyuki despite the fact that she despised him. Her access to Sword Art Online was provided by her brother, as she did not own a NerveGear or a copy of the game. Since her brother was away from home at the time of the game's launch, she instead joined the game as it was released, locking her into the game with her life on the line. She would spend most of her time as a solo player in the early stages of the game, and even when she first teamed up with Kirito in the first floor boss fight, she barely stood out. It was only after being inspired by him and his parting words that she began to push herself and be a driving force in the game.

• Kirigaya Kazuto [桐ヶ谷和人] (Kirito)
  Asuna met Kirito while defeating the first floor boss of Aincrad. They formed a partnership to ensure the game would be completed, but their friendship turned into a romantic interest as the game progressed. The two would eventually marry, forming a pact that they would not live out their lives in Sword Art Online if either of them fell in battle.
• Yui
  Yui is an AI entity that Kirito and Asuna encountered on the 22nd floor of Aincrad. Kirito and Asuna adopted Yui as a child, believing her to be a playful child, and continue to do so when they discover her true origins.
• Rika Shinozaki (Lisbeth)
  Lisbeth is Asuna's best friend in Sword Art Online. Using her skills as a blacksmith, Lisbeth created Asuna's main weapon, the Lambent's Light.
