Dragon Ball Z: Broly - Second Coming is a Japanese animated martial arts fantasy film based on Akira Toriyama's original Dragon Ball manga . It is the tenth feature film in the Dragon Ball Z series and premiered at the Toei Animation Film Salon on March 12, 1994. The film was directed by Shigeyasu Yamauchi, produced by Chiaki Imada, written by Takao Koyama, and the music was composed by Shunsuke Kikuchi.

Summary

The film's opening scene shows a space capsule flying towards Earth. This capsule contains the Saiyan Broly , who apparently managed to escape the destruction of the new Planet Vegeta after a comet collided with it. Broly is injured and weak, but alive. Colder weather begins to set in, however, and Broly eventually loses consciousness and becomes encased in ice.

In the present day (seven years later), Goten , Videl , and Trunks are searching for the Dragon Balls and eventually stumble upon a cursed village named Nataday. The village's local priest says they are constantly threatened by an invisible monster and must make sacrifices to appease the creature. Videl and the two half-Saiyans devise a plan to trick the creature and solve their problems.

The plan seems to be going well until Goten starts complaining about being hungry. He starts crying, which could ruin their plan. Videl slaps him to try to shut him up, but she ends up having to give Goten a dumpling to make him stop. Their plan ends up working, and the monster turns out to be a dinosaur, which they quickly take care of. Peace returns to Nataday Village, and the trio continues their journey for the Dragon Balls. What the group didn't realize, however, is that Goten's crying earlier woke Broly. Early the next morning, Videl is awakened by explosions in the distance, prompting her to take off and investigate its source.

Videl comes face to face with Broly. Since she had no idea who Broly was or what he was capable of, she tried to fight him, but was quickly knocked out by the Saiyan. Goten and Trunks arrive later and discover Broly and an unresponsive Videl. The two children are afraid to start a fight with the massive enemy, however, Broly looks at Goten and remembers his father, Goku . This causes him to fly into an uncontrollable rage. Knowing that they are both in extreme danger, Goten and Trunks transform into Super Saiyans , but are quickly defeated by Broly. Before they are killed, however, Gohan intervenes and saves them. To Broly, Gohan is more like Goku than Goten, so Gohan now becomes Broly's target. While Gohan keeps Broly busy, the other three attempt to find the final Dragon Ball.

The battle continues, and both Gohan and Broly use their Super Saiyan 2 and Legendary Super Saiyan forms, respectively. While Gohan still cannot defeat Broly with his sheer strength, he manages to land a few decent hits. Gohan notices a nearby volcano spewing scorching magma and devises a plan to use it to kill Broly. He attempts to lure Broly into the area and successfully throws the Saiyan into the scorching magma. Gohan, however, is now at his limit and passes out from exhaustion. He lands on a nearby rock, which is also flowing magma, putting Gohan in great danger. Krillin , however, swoops down on Gohan and retrieves him before he is engulfed by the magma.

Despite being thrown into a lava pit, Broly emerges again, albeit severely burned and injured. The enraged Saiyan continues his attack on Gohan, who is virtually powerless to stop him. Videl does her best to stop Broly, but the Legendary Super Saiyan is completely unfazed by her attempts. Gohan, however, is inspired by her actions and rises for one final attack fueled by pure emotion. Gohan charges a Kamehameha while Broly retaliates with his own energy attack. Broly's energy ball begins to dwarf the Kamehameha.

The seven Dragon Balls have been recovered, and their burst awakens Goten, who decides to join Gohan in this final attack. Although Shenron has not been summoned, Goten wishes that Goku were there to help them. This wish seems to be granted, as they all hear their father encouraging them to unleash their full power. Trunks also awakens and uses what little energy he has left to shoot Broly, distracting him long enough for Goten, Gohan, and Goku to pierce Broly's energy ball and launch him into the sun. The Dragon Balls are redistributed around the world again, leading the brothers to believe that Goku was really there with him, but he is nowhere to be found.

Music

The film's opening theme song is "WE GOTTA POWER," performed by Hironobu Kageyama with lyrics by Yukinojo Mori. The song itself was composed by Chiho Kiyoka and arranged by Kenji Yamamoto. The film's ending theme song is titled "Kiseki no Big Fight" and shares the same theme song as the opening theme song.

Outside of Japan, North America first received a release of Broly - Second Coming on DVD and VHS in 2005.
