Chi Chi - Dragon Ball
Chi-Chi is the wife of protagonist Son Goku and appears in most Dragon Ball series in minor roles. She is often seen wearing a variation of Chinese and Korean clothing. She is voiced by Mayumi Shō in Dragon Ball Z Seasons 1-2 and Dragon Ball Z movies 1-3, and by Naoko Watanabe in Dragon Ball Z Seasons 3-9, Dragon Ball Z movies 4-13, Dragon Ball GT , Dragon Ball Kai , Dragon Ball Super , video games, and other appearances.
Appearances in Dragon Ball
In Dragon Ball , Chi-Chi first appears as a little girl with a blue bikini, a pink helmet, and a green cape. Her first encounter with Yamcha is when she is on her way to find Master Roshi in search of the Bansho Fan, as she needs it to put out the fire surrounding his castle. She attacks Yamcha with a laser beam from her helmet because she is afraid of strangers, but is knocked unconscious by Yamcha. Yamcha realizes who she is and takes her back to her father, Ox-King . When she wakes up, Yamcha tells her he is in love with her to prevent Chi-Chi from attacking him, a lie she believes, allowing Yamcha to run away when she is not looking.
Her next encounter is with Goku, who has been sent by Ox-King to take her to Master Roshi's island. While riding the Nimbus, she accidentally pulls Goku's tail, and since Goku cannot tell the difference between a boy and a girl in appearance, he stomps on her crotch. Annoyed by this, she knocks him off the Nimbus. This awkward exchange, however, leads her to believe that Goku might be attracted to her. They reach Master Roshi's house and learn that he has thrown away the Bansho fan, forcing them to find another way to extinguish the flames.
Chi-Chi, Goku, and Master Roshi return to Fire Mountain, where Roshi manages to extinguish the flames with a Kamehameha, but demolishes the castle in the process. Before Goku's group leaves, Chi-Chi asks Goku if he will think of her during his travels. He replies that he will and turns the question back on her, making Chi-Chi blush.
They meet again as children when Fire Mountain Village has been rebuilt and repopulated. Chi-Chi, waiting for Goku to return, consults a fortune teller who tells her that Goku is on his way back. She begins planning their wedding to Ox-King by picking flowers outside the village. When Goku appears, the two talk for a while. Shortly after, the village is attacked by the Red Ribbon Army, prompting Goku to continue his adventure. Before leaving, she asks him, "What about marriage?" He tells her he'll try it next time he comes, not understanding what a wedding is.
Chi-Chi joins the 23rd World Martial Arts Tournament as "Anonymous." Chi-Chi greets Goku, who meets her with confusion, as he has no idea who she is. This angers Ger and causes her to yell at him, calling him stupid for not only forgetting her name, but also their promise. She is quickly defeated by Goku via ringout and then tells him her name, much to everyone's surprise. After remembering their promise, Goku proposes to Chi-Chi on the spot. She tells Goku that she loves him, which confuses the naive young fighter. She demonstrates her feelings by kissing him on the cheek before apologizing to Yamcha for not marrying him (remembering her false confession from when she was a child). Eventually, they marry and live peacefully in a forest home before having their first son.
Appearances in Dragon Ball Z
In Dragon Ball Z, Chi-Chi is now 20 years old and has her first son, Son Gohan . Four years later, Raditz attacks Earth and Goku is killed in the battle. Piccolo takes Gohan to training, and Chi-Chi is left distraught and alone. A year later, she returns to Roshi's house to witness the battle against the Saiyans on Baba the fortune teller's crystal ball. Once the battle is over, she goes to retrieve her unconscious son and her immobilized husband.
Hospitalized and unable to move, Chi-Chi cares for Goku during his stay in the hospital until he is healed. Meanwhile, Gohan, Krillin , and Bulma leave for Namek to find the Namekian Dragon Balls. Unable to cope, she assembles a team consisting of Roshi, Puar None Oolong , and Yajirobe to go to Namek and find Gohan and Krillin. The spaceship does not take off, however, and she is forced to wait for them to return to Earth.
After returning, Chi-Chi hires a tutor for Gohan, who is promptly fired and thrown out a window by Chi-Chi for insulting Goku. With Goku back from Namek, Piccolo stays at their house to train for the upcoming androids. Chi-Chi is reluctant, but allows Gohan to go with Goku and train for the upcoming fight with Cell . Chi-Chi, distraught over losing her husband and nearly her son, devotes her life to raising her children. Gohan manages to get into college, and Chi-Chi even, unusually, trains her second son, Son Goten , in martial arts. She is largely a cameo character in the Majin Buu Saga and beyond and, like many other characters, is killed when Earth is destroyed, though she is resurrected on New Namek.
Appearances in Dragon Ball Super
In Dragon Ball Super , Chi-Chi grows tired of Goku's constant training and fighting and makes him work on her radish farm to earn money for the family until Mr. Satan pays a large consolation fee for the misunderstanding that he defeated Majin Buu. She is most often used as a minor plot element and makes several appearances.
Appearances in Dragon Ball GT
In Dragon Ball GT, Chi-Chi, now much older, usually partners with Bulma and Videl . She still has a strong maternal attitude towards her children. In an attempt to keep Goten away from danger, she always warns him about girls when he goes out. Baby Saga, like most people on Earth, is possessed. She is left with her adult son Goten after Goku leaves with the original Shenron.
