How did Luffy and Kaido manage to split the sky? (And who else did it?)

Monkey D. Luffy, the protagonist of Eiichiro Oda's One Piece manga, is known for his many epic battles. One fight stood out among Luffy's many battles against his many opponents. The fight we're talking about is Luffy's fight against Kaidou of the Four Emperors, one of the most powerful characters in the entire franchise and one of its main villains. With the conclusion of the Wano Country Arc, we finally have a clear winner of this battle, but that won't be the topic of this article. Namely, what we're going to talk about is the famous explosion in the sky that occurred during the battle. We'll explain how it happened and who else managed to split the sky in One Piece.
The reason Luffy and Kaido were able to split the sky during their fight is because of the pressure caused by a clash of their respective Haoshoku Haki. Haoshoku Haki is such a powerful Haki that when two of them collide, they are capable of inflicting severe damage to their surroundings, including the famous sky-splitting moment. Other characters in the past have also been able to do this.
In this article, we'll explain in more detail how and why the splitting of the sky occurs in One Piece. We'll also tell you when the splitting of the sky occurred in the past and which characters caused it. There will be spoilers in this article, so if you're not fully up-to-date on the events of One Piece, be careful how you approach this article.
How does sky splitting happen in One Piece?
Haoshoku Haki is the rarest form of Haki; it allows users to control others of their own volition. Only one in a few million people worldwide is born with this type of Haki, which cannot be developed through training. People possessing this type of Haki are considered to have the attributes of a monarch and are called conquerors or supreme rulers. Haoshoku Haki has the power to harm inanimate objects and built-up areas near the user.
This was originally seen when Shanks used his Haoshoku Haki on Moby Dick. His use of Haki was so effective that it not only took down the majority of Whitebeard's crew who attempted to attack him, but it also damaged some of the ship's wood. This ship had managed to withstand the harsh sailing conditions of the New World for decades. When two Haoshoku Haki users collide, lightning-like currents of energy are produced. Often, battles will elevate this energy to such heights that it can be seen from all over the island.
Luffy and Chinjao's fight in the Corrida Colosseum was the first example of this impact seen and exhibited. The force of a Haoshoku Haki clash also generates shockwaves that shake the surrounding area and can even push away nearby people and objects. The impact of the collision between Gol D. Roger and Whitebeard, two of the most powerful Haoshoku users of all time, knocked down all the plants and animals on the island and even exerted great force on their ships offshore.
Kaidou's subordinates were very worried that during the half-day battle, they would completely destroy the castle they were in and possibly the entire island of Onigashima. A huge crack also opened up in the sky and clouds above them when Whitebeard, Shanks, and later Kaidou and Big Mom crashed into each other with their Haoshoku.
Which characters caused the splitting of the sky in One Piece?
Throughout history, several characters in One Piece have been able to soar through the skies. In this section, we'll tell you who they are and how and when they achieved this.
Whitebeard vs. Shanks

Later, when it is revealed that Shanks is one of the Four Emperors, and it is also revealed that Whitebeard is one of the Four Emperors and that Shanks wanted to speak to Whitebeard to beg him to remove Ace, the leader of Shanks's Second Division. Shanks was worried for Ace's safety when Whitebeard's fleet arrived after his attempt to kill Blackbeard. During this meeting, it is also revealed that Blackbeard is responsible for the three scars that cover Shanks' left eye, warning him to be careful around him.
Whitebeard belittles Shanks and claims he won't be able to lead him for a hundred years. Whitebeard then pulls his blade out of Shanks' hands, causing Shanks to lose his bisento. The two cannons collide with such force that they split the clouds above them in two. This shocks some members of Shanks and Whitebeard's team.
Kaidou vs. Big Mom

Upon arriving at Onigashima, Linlin awoke and was fed large amounts of candy while the three headliners watched. Seeing King, he tried to convince him to accompany him to Totto Land since he belonged to one of the three races he didn't possess. Seeing that she didn't understand, she demanded they release her, which Kaidou did.
After that, he spoke to her momentarily, summoning Napoleon and attacking him. Eventually, the two abandoned the fight and turned to heavy drinking, discussing the Fire Festival and announcing that the Big Mom Pirates and the Beast Pirates would ally. While preparing for the Fire Festival, while donning a kimono, Linlin spoke to her group, checking that they were safe.
Shortly after, she heard a noise outside where she was, seeing Chopper. Recognizing him, Linlin began chasing the tank in search of Luffy. She quickly returned to class after Prometheus called out to her upon seeing Nami, Carrot, and Shinobu. Big Mom chased after them while transforming nearby objects into buddies. Big Mom then captured Nami, Carrot, and Zeus. She went on stage to join Kaidou as he unveiled his new Onigashima project and laughed when Kaidou cut off Kurozumi Orochi's head for opposing her proposal.
As the raid began, Big Mom challenged Luffy, mocking his plan to defeat Kaidou, but Luffy retorted that his goal was to conquer them both and their followers in a full-scale battle.
Roger vs. Whitebeard

Izo was allowed to board the ship, and Whitebeard then put Oden to the test. He would be allowed to join the crew if he could maintain his hold on the chain for three days. Oden heard a woman in danger with ten minutes left and freed her, drifting towards an island. The next day, Whitebeard discovered Karma and his men confronting Oden and a woman named Toki. After Whitebeard defeated Karma, he finally allowed Oden to join his crew. The crew also included Inuarashi and Nekomamushi, who had hidden on Whitebeard's ship.
Oden was appointed leader of the Second Division when Whitebeard divided his crew into five groups two years later. Oden, Whitebeard, and Roger reconnected four years after their marriage and faced off for three days before splitting the sky. He then shared a drink with Roger and Oden while marveling at Roger's exploits. When Newgate learned that Roger wanted Oden to be part of his crew, he reacted fiercely and opposed it but eventually bowed to the samurai's demands.
Kaido vs Luffy

After the conversation, both returned to their normal forms, and Yamato imbued his Kanabo with Haoshoku Haki to attack Kaidou with his Shinsoku attack. However, just then, Luffy and Kozuki Momonosuke, in his giant dragon form, arrived on the roof of the Skull Dome. Luffy activated his Snakeman to attack Kaidou with a Gomu Gomu no Jet Calverin, an attack that accidentally coincided with Yamato's (as neither was aware of the other's presence before striking Kaidou). Seeing Momonosuke's new appearance (though without recognizing him), Kaidou decided to revert to his full form in order to properly confront him.
Then he, Luffy, and Momonosuke engaged in a quick fight that left the samurai bitten and culminated in a Haoshoku Haki clash that tore the sky apart. After confirming his ability to stop clouds and having Yamato on his side, Luffy had to fight the Emperor alone again. Throughout the battle, Kaidou weakened, which led to the Homuragumo losing strength and eventually breaking Onigashima. Kaidou began drinking and using Shuron Hakke while having fun, starting a much more aggressive phase of the fight. Despite this, Luffy managed to avoid or block the majority of his blows, and he also managed to land Busoshoku Haki and Haoshoku Haki on him.
Kaidou watched Charlotte Linlin leave after defeating her and learning the result of their match. He was furious, and after remembering his first encounter with her, he began to cry. This didn't seem to matter to Luffy, who transformed into a Snake Man and began attacking her extremely quickly while declaring that it would be his last blow. The strikes initially overwhelmed Kaidou, but he was able to avoid them using his future vision. As their fight drew to a close, they both prepared to land another blow, but a CP0 member interrupted Luffy's attack. Kaidou was surprised by her presence and decided to end the fight in the same manner as Kozuki Oden. The Emperor was completely devastated.
