Synopsis
Shido Itsuka's life has been a whirlwind lately. Or more precisely, a spatial earthquake. Several of them, in fact. Powerful "spirits" from other dimensions who take the form of girls are unwittingly causing these earthquakes in his reality. And Shido is the only one who can stop them thanks to his unique ability: kissing them! By making the girls kiss and fall deeply in love with him, their devastating earthquake powers are sealed. The alternative to their romance is to have a more militant and technological organization called the AST (Anti-Spirit Team) destroy the spirits, something Shido is fiercely opposed to.
So far, six spirits have fallen in love with Shido (along with a few others). The girls compete with each other and vie for his affection, leaving him with endless headaches and mishaps. But a new challenger is approaching. Season 3 will introduce a new spirit, and perhaps more romantic surprises.
Background
Date A Live , an anime adaptation of a light novel series of the same name, debuted in April 2013. The first season of the anime consisted of 12 episodes and a special OVA episode. It was produced by Production IMS. A second season followed a year later in April 2014, produced by JC Staff. Both seasons were licensed in North America by Funimation.
A third season is expected to air in January 2019.
Characters
Shido Itsuka (Japanese: Nobunaga Shimazaki / English: Josh Grelle)
The main protagonist of the story. He has the unique ability to seal the disastrous powers of spirits with a kiss. He is the object of affection of every spirit introduced so far.
Tohka Yatogami (Japanese: Marina Inoue / English: Michelle Rojas)
Tohka is the first spirit saved by Shido Itsuka. Her primary weapon is the Sandalphon. If she loses control due to anger, her destructive reverse form, Dark Tohka, takes over.
Kotori Itsuka (Japanese: Ayana Taketatsu / English: Bryn Apprill)
Shido's adoptive sister. It was revealed early in the series that she was the leader of the secret group called Ratatoskr, tasked with peacefully sealing spirits. Years ago, she was also transformed into a spirit. Her spiritual powers include incredible defensive and healing abilities.
Origami Tobiichi (Japanese: Misuzu Togashi / English: Michelle Lee)
A brilliant and talented AST fighter. Although she is the AST's best witch, she pales in comparison to the powers of the spirits. Her parents were killed by a spirit years ago. She often competes with Tohka for Shido's affection. She is generally not sociable with others.
Mio Takamiya
A girl roughly the same age as Shido whose origins remain a mystery.
Yoshino (Japanese: Iori Nomizu / English: Tia Ballard)
A young girl and the second Spirit Shido saves. She has difficulty speaking. She possesses a second personality called Yoshinon, which manifests as a white rabbit puppet on Yoshino's left hand. Her angel is a giant monster that resembles Yoshinon.
Kurumi Tokisaki (Japanese: Asami Sanada / English: Alexis Tipton)
A dangerous spirit who hopes to consume the mana stored within Shido after sealing several spirits. She was an ordinary human before being transformed into a spirit. She wields several firearms with bullets that have different effects. She can also create an almost countless number of clones of herself.
Kaguya Yamai (Japanese: Maaya Uchida / English: Brittney Karbowski)
Kaguya is Yuzuru's twin sister. She is outgoing and outspoken, which can sometimes make her appear immature or childish. Originally, she and Yuzuru were one Spirit, but with Shido's help, their powers were sealed and they remained two separate Spirits. Her main weapon is El Re'em and she can manipulate wind.
Yuzuru Yamai (Japanese: Sarah Emi Bridcutt / English: Megan Shipman)
Kaguya's identical sister, Yuzuru is reserved and speaks precisely, almost like a robot. Her main weapon is El Nahash, and like her sister, she can manipulate wind.
Miku Izayoi (Japanese: Minori Chihara / English: Jad Saxton)
An idol and spirit who can't stand men. She can control women's minds with her angel. She eventually falls in love with Shido after he shows her that men can be selfless.
Natsumi (Japanese: Ayumi Namo)
A new spirit introduced into the series.
