Dragon Ball Switch Games - Dragon Ball
The continued mega-success of Akira Toriyama's Dragon Ball Z franchise continues to spawn a vast array of manga , anime, toys , and of course, video games .
More than 80 video games featuring the story of Dragon Ball Z and its characters have been produced by companies such as Bandai and Namco Bandai since the 1980s.
The Nintendo Switch hybrid video game console was released worldwide in 2017. Since then, a handful of Dragon Ball Z titles have been released for it. While none of these titles were designed exclusively for Nintendo Switch, titles that have enjoyed popularity on other gaming platforms such as PS4 , Xbox ONE, Nintendo 3DS, Microsoft Windows, and others have been translated for release on Nintendo Switch.
These video games allow fans to dive into the world of Dragon Ball Z and become Goku , Gohan , Goten , or other Dragon Ball Z characters as they train and battle in martial arts while searching for the seven wish-granting Dragon Balls.
Dragon Ball Z Xenoverse 2
The first Dragon Ball Z game released on Nintendo Switch was Dragon Ball Z Xenoverse 2 in late 2016. This fighting/role-playing game developed by Bandai, QLOC and Dimps was a sequel to the first Dragon Ball Z Xenoverse None
The story is a sequel to DBZ Xenoverse 1. Now, the Supreme Elder Kai, the guardian of time, is tasked with turning back time to establish a new pattern for previously established events in order to restore the future to its proper balance. The first item on the menu is Goku's battle with Raditz...
The game itself was supposed to have a similar feel to the first Dragon Ball Z Xenoverse installment. However, this time, players have more freedom to explore the world of Dragon Ball Z. The game takes place in an RPG style, peppered with many impactful 3D battles. The scope of the game has been expanded while retaining almost all of the gameplay options from the first Dragon Ball Z Xenoverse. However, the sequel also includes hidden hubs and powers, many of which must be unlocked. At least 13 downloadable content packs have been made available.
This game was widely praised by many critics and sold over 5 million copies worldwide.
Dragon Ball FighterZ
The following year, in 2018, Bandai Namco released Dragon Ball FighterZ , its second major Dragon Ball Z game translated for play on the Nintendo Switch. Many critics at the time considered it "one of the best fighting games released on the eighth generation of video game consoles." The plot fills in some of the gaps left between the "Universe 6" and "Future Trunks" arcs of Dragon Ball Super.
The roster includes 21 characters, with the potential to expand to over 40. This includes hidden, unlockable, and paid downloadable fighters. The Nintendo Switch version combines the original game released for other platforms, as well as a handful of special edition versions released since then.
The gameplay of the battle feature has been expanded to include tag team-style multiplayer combat. Players select and create a team of three fighters. They are controlled individually, but have backup assist moves available from the other two members upon request. This creates the potential for a wide range of creative combos with tag team-style action. The battle is not over until all team members have been defeated.
Special moves and techniques can be performed and acquired, such as the Ki Charge, Vanish Attack, Super Dash, and Dragon Rush. Take all of this and add special endings that can occur at the end of a battle. These only occur when certain conditions are met, which unlock them from the game. This includes the character combination as well as the stage they are in, etc.
Dragon Ball FighterZ has won and been nominated for multiple awards and has sold over 4 million copies worldwide. Some of the most positive reviews have hailed it as "one of the best fighting games in years."
Super Dragon Ball Heroes World Mission
The popular Japanese-style card game meets Dragon Ball Z in this arcade trading card game from Bandai Namco. Released as "Dragon Ball Heroes" several years earlier, fans finally received an enhanced version for the Nintendo Switch in 2019. The game itself has received numerous anime and manga adaptations.
Super Dragon Ball Heroes World Mission offers players the choice of eight different races and the ability to choose their characters' fighting abilities, such as Hero, Elite, or Berserker. New Dragon Balls can be collected in addition to the standard seven. These include the Ultimate Dragon Balls, Namekian Dragon Balls, Dark Dragon Balls, and Super Dragon Balls.
The Nintendo Switch version features over 350 characters and over 1,000 cards. All characters and cards from the first eight Super Dragon Ball Heroes arcade games and the first two versions of Super Dragon Ball Heroes: Universe Mission have been included in this version.
Each player uses an IC Hero License card in addition to a hand of 7 cards to create their own avatar seeking to become the Super Dragon Ball Heroes World Champion. Usually played solo, it offers multiplayer for up to 6 players. The game can be played online or offline.
Unlike other fighting game-style Dragon Ball Z titles available until its release on Nintendo Switch, Super Dragon Ball Heroes World Mission is a tactical card game requiring complex strategies and a story rooted in the Dragon Ball Z multiverse. Its predecessor, Dragon Ball Z Heroes, was considered the number one digital card game and sold over 500 million copies.
