Dragon Ball Z TV (OVA) Specials - Dragon Ball
There are four Dragon Ball Z TV specials and one crossover special. Some are purely one-offs, while others attempt to expand on an already established plot. Many argue that, since they were never in manga form, Akira Toriyama , these specials are not canon and do not tie into the original Dragon Ball Z storyline.
Bardock - Goku's father
This special aired in Japan on October 17, 1990. It was directed by Mitsuo Hashimoto and distributed by Toei as the first Dragon Ball Z television special.
Bardock: The Father of Goku follows the story of Bardock, None Goku, Bardock's biological Saiyan father. Bardock is a low-class Saiyan warrior with his planet-conquering team on the planet Kanassa. The team is celebrating their victory, after exterminating all life on the planet, when Bardock is surprised by a last survivor and receives the gift of visions of the future. He then sees the destruction of his planet and the deaths of his friends and team at the hands of Frieza and his henchmen. He also sees the future of his son Kakarot (Goku), who is sent to conquer Earth.
Frieza, Dodoria , and Zarbon discussed how Planet Kanassa had been on the agenda for some time, and while it was supposed to be a difficult planet to conquer, a Saiyan team had successfully conquered it in a matter of days. The Saiyans' continued growth in power worried the tyrant and his elites. Knowing that the Saiyans were getting stronger after each battle, they decided that something had to be done to proactively neutralize the potential threat they would pose—the destruction of the race and their planet.
Meanwhile, Bardock ignores the visions and heads to Planet Meat to reunite with his team, only to find them all dead after being killed by the ruthless Dodoria and his squad. Bardock fights but is ultimately defeated by Dodoria and left for dead. He fights his way to a space pod and heads to Planet Vegeta in a vain attempt to warn everyone of their impending doom at the hands of Frieza. No one heeds his warning, so he heads into space himself to confront the evil galactic warlord. Defeating much of Frieza's army, he forces Frieza out of his ship. Bardock, filled with anger and pride, gives one last speech before firing a final spirit cannon at Frieza. Frieza, sitting in his floating pod above his ship, retaliates with his own Supernova, dissolving Bardock's attack and disintegrating the Saiyans in Planet Vegeta's orbit, eventually exploding the planet itself. However, moments before his death, Bardock has a vision of Goku defeating Frieza, and a wry smile spreads across his face.
Dragon Ball Z: Summer Vacation Special (Special Movie Preview)
Dragon Ball Z: Summer Vacation Special is a one-off special that aired on August 3, 1992 (one month after the film's release). Dragon Ball Z: Super Android 13! None
Goku and Gohan appear on the street in tuxedos (the same setting as the previously mentioned film) and discuss all the Dragon Ball films ( The Curse of the Blood Rubies None Sleeping Princess in the Devil's Castle , and Mystical Adventure ) and the Dragon Ball Z films up to that point ( Dead Zone None World's Strongest None The Tree of Might None Lord Slug None Cooler's Revenge None Cooler Returns , and Dragon Ball Z: Super Android 13!, which Goku remarks is a recent event).
In the final scene, before Gohan urges the audience to go see the final movie, Goku mentions that he doesn't like wearing a tuxedo and powers up to put on his red/orange martial arts uniform. Gohan attempts to do the same but isn't strong enough and remains in his tuxedo, somewhat comically undone.
The history of trunks
Dragon Ball Z: The History of Trunks is the second television special based on the main story of Dragon Ball Z, expanding the story of the anime. The special was directed by Yoshihiro Ueda and first aired on television in Japan on February 24, 1993. The History of Trunks is highly revered among fans; however, its canonical legitimacy is highly debated. The History of Trunks shows us the history of Future Trunks before he came to the main timeline to kill Frieza and give Goku the heart medicine. Trunks and Gohan's future world is cruel, and while everyday life appears to be as normal, Android 17 and Android 18 run amok, causing death and destruction wherever they go.
The story begins with Goku dying of a heart virus and all the Z Fighters (except Gohan) being wiped out by the Androids shortly after. Piccolo's death unfortunately also means the death of Kami, resulting in the disappearance of the Dragon Balls.
Later, when Trunks is fourteen and Gohan is twenty-three, Gohan is the only fighter left alive who can stand up to the androids and survive. Gohan trains Trunks as best he can, but Trunks never reaches Super Saiyan status. Despite repeated failures, the androids attack a nearby amusement park, and Gohan and Trunks intercept the menacing duo. The fight with Android 17 seems completely one-sided until Gohan transforms into a Super Saiyan and begins to take over the reins of the battle. That is, until Android 18 joins the fray, and once again, the tide turns against the now-Super Saiyan Gohan. Trunks launches an unsuccessful attack on Android 18 and manages to hold it off for a second before being swiftly defeated himself. Losing horribly, the Saiyan duo decide to hide, forcing the androids to blast the area with energy attacks before becoming bored and leaving. The explosions unfortunately left Gohan without his left arm and Trunks in critical condition. Gohan gives Trunks a senzu bean before passing out. Trunks wakes up to find Gohan incapacitated and without his left arm and takes him home to his mother Bulma, who is caring for the injured Gohan. After recovering, they continue their training together.
Sometime later, the androids attack Pepper Town. Trunks desperately wants to fight alongside Gohan to prove himself, but Gohan knocks him out to protect him. Gohan launches a furious attack on the surprised Android 17 and manages to put up a decent fight. He is quickly overpowered and outmaneuvered by the pair, partly due to his disability and partly due to the androids' perfect coordination. After being knocked to the ground in the rain, a hail of combined energy from the androids spells doom for the valiant half-Saiyan. Trunks awakens to find his mentor's body lying lifeless on the rainy street. He is overcome with grief and anger and finally achieves the Super Saiyan transformation.
Trunks sees Bulma working on the time machine he will use to go back in time, but claims he no longer needs help fighting the androids now that he is a Super Saiyan. Bulma reminds him that Gohan was once a Super Saiyan too, but he didn't stand a chance. Trunks hears of an attack on Bridgetown and leaves, much to his mother's dismay and ignoring her pleas. He finds and confronts the androids, but is shocked to discover he is completely outclassed and overpowered, even in his Super Saiyan form. Despite their playfulness with him, he is severely beaten by the two men and left for dead. Almost as if by a miracle, Trunks manages to survive and wakes up in his house with his mother by his side. He decides that going to the past to seek help is probably the best course of action after all.

Special Crossover: Dream 9 Toriko & One Piece & Dragon Ball Z Super Special Collaboration
The Dream 9 Toriko & One Piece & Dragon Ball Z Super Collaboration Special is a crossover special that aired on April 7, 2013 on Fuji TV and features characters from Dragon Ball Z, One Piece, and Toriko.
An international cooking tournament is held where all competitors must race to the center of the island. Arriving at a three-way intersection, the group of characters splits into three different groups. The first group (Sanji, Zoro, Setsuno, Komatsu, and Gohan) takes a forest road. The next group (Brook, Nami, Roshi, Rin, Franky, 18, Trunks, Goten, Chopper, and Sunny) takes the desert road, and the remaining competitors (Toriko, Luffy, and Goku) take the difficult mountain path.
Goku takes the lead, but is called away to face an alien threat while Toriko and Luffy continue the race. Zoro appears at the edge of the forest completely lost and is challenged by Zebra. Vegeta then appears looking for Goku after hearing about the race.
Goku returns and grabs the finish flag with Luffy and Toriko. This forces a sudden death match between the three. Mr. Satan accidentally falls into the ring and is praised for joining the fight. The three fighters are so strong that the entire ring, except for where Mr. Satan is standing, is destroyed, causing them all to lose to Mr. Satan by ringout.
Mr. Satan shares the prize with everyone, exclaiming that he's much happier enjoying it with friends. Soon after, some competitors question the reason for the event, and it is revealed that the IGO (International Gourmet Organization) planned to capture the sea creature Akami using the world's strongest fighters. Akami emerges from the sea and absorbs Usopp, Mr. Satan, and Gohan's power, increasing in size and strength before escaping. The fighters are told they have 30 minutes to save their friends after Akami's attack.
Characters from all three franchises attack Akami, but their energy is absorbed, and the sea creature Akami is even more powerful. Luffy, Toriko, and Goku also launch an attack on the enemy, but realize their attacks are ineffective. Goku asks the others to distract Akami while he retrieves a Spirit Bomb. Akami begins to absorb the Spirit Bomb, so Luffy and Toriko attack with an Elephant Gatling and a Twin Kugi Punch, respectively, before Goku finishes the job with a Super Saiyan 3 Kamehameha. Everyone celebrates by eating the recently defeated Akami while Zoro, Zebra, and Vegeta continue their fight elsewhere.
