Evangelion Tenth Angel Sahaquiel

Sahaquiel is a Child of Adam and is referred to as the tenth angel and is known as "the angel of heaven." He appears in Episode 12 of the Evangelion anime series. He is first observed orbiting Earth above the Indian Ocean.

Physical appearance

His appearance is rather unique. In the center of his orange body, there is a large illustration of an eye, although this eye has very different colors than what would be considered normal. His sclera is yellow, while his iris is a bright green. His pupil is colored the same as his body. On either side of the central eye, there are smaller eyes that are colored differently and are oriented parallel to the main eye. From each eye, there are three long growths that continue outward and two smaller ones on the opposite side. He is also incredibly large, as the size of his central pupil itself is approximately the size of an Evangelion Unit. Sahaquiel is the first Angel to be discovered coming from space. He can also separate small parts of his body and use them as bombs. The use of AT fields is another strength of this Angel. Although it doesn't appear to do so from a distance, its core appears to be located in the pupil of its central eye, as this is the point where Asuka attacks. Evangelion 2.0 Rebuild In the film, Sahaquiel's design is considerably different, but its overall function remains largely the same.

Remarkable abilities

  • Bomb: NERV uses satellites in space to observe Sahaquiel and discovers that he is capable of separating small parts of his body which are then launched towards Earth, resulting in incredible impact craters. Their analysis shows that Sahaquiel will attempt to crash into NERV HQ in an attempt to annihilate the facility, which he is more than likely capable of doing compared to the tiny bombs Sahaquiel uses while still in orbit. NERV believes that not only would their facility be destroyed, but all of Tokyo-3 would be annihilated with it. Sahaquiel also uses these smaller bombs to test his trajectory. He is able to learn from these tests and uses this information to precisely target NERV HQ.

  • AT Field: Sahaquiel also possesses the ability to produce a particularly powerful AT field. Numerous N2 bombs are fired at the Angel before it is intercepted by the Evangelion units , but Sahaquiel is spared from the barrage. He is also capable of using AT fields as a weapon, a feat that NERV's lead scientist Ritsuko finds to be something quite unusual and unique. Several satellites attempting to observe and analyze the Angel are destroyed using this offensive AT field.

Battle and defeat

Sahaquiel suddenly appears in orbit around Earth above the Indian Ocean, seemingly out of nowhere, and is discovered by NERV shortly after. Analysis of the Angel is launched via distant satellites, but they are all destroyed by Sahaquiel's incredibly powerful AT field. He is then seen separating from a small part of his body and sending it towards Earth at incredible speed. This is not the first time this has happened, as there are photographs showing a line of craters left by these destructive bombs. With each attempt, Sahaquiel gets closer and closer to hitting Tokyo-3, and the city is assumed to be his target. A barrage of N2 bombs is launched at Sahaquiel, but his AT field proves too powerful, as they are completely ineffective. Sahaquiel's entire body is assumed to be a bomb, which would cause catastrophic damage if allowed to hit Earth. A large-scale evacuation is ordered for everyone except essential personnel needed to lead the operation.

Misato places her hopes on a plan that can destroy Sahaquiel before it makes contact with Earth, but achieving it would be a miracle, according to Ritsuko . This involves having all three Evangelion Units intercept the Angel at the same time, which requires incredible precision and timing. Each unit is positioned near the estimated point of impact and must "catch" the Angel using their own AT fields. Shinji is the first to arrive and manages to hold off Sahaquiel on his own while Asuka and Roi arrive shortly after to assist. As Shinji continues to hold the Angel in the air and prevent it from hitting the ground, Rei cuts the AT field with her Progressive Knife to create an opening for Asuka to attack Sahaquiel's core. Unique to Sahaquiel, its core is not a fixed core and rotates while in motion, making it difficult for the pilots to complete an attack. Rei intervenes, while taking significant damage, grabs the core with her Evangelion's bare hands, making it available for Asuka to make a cut into the core. The attack succeeds and Sahaquiel is defeated.

Sahaquiel in other media

The tenth angel, Sahaquiel, makes an appearance in the Rebuild of Evangelion 2.0 film. In the film, this angel is presented as the eighth angel, not the tenth. Compared to his counterpart in the animated series, Sahaquiel's battle in the Rebuild film is relatively the same. The significant difference is the angel's design. At first, Sahaquiel is in space and takes the form of a giant ball. Upon entering Earth's atmosphere, he changes shape to a form similar to that of the animated series.
