In this article, we'll give a brief overview of all these films and how they relate to the vast, expansive, and often confusing world of the Destiny series. Or, to put it another way, how they relate to the Nasuverse. If you've never heard of the term "Nasuverse," then you've got a long way to go to learn all about Destiny, and the collection of articles on our site is a great place to start.
The first thing we should mention is that the list of films published here doesn't simply recount the events of a single timeline in chronological order, like, say, the five Jurassic Park films. The way Destiny works is more like Connery's long history of James Bond films. In these films, Sean Connery played James Bond and Daniel Craig also played the role, years later (along with many other actors). They aren't usually described as taking place in different timelines, but we also don't hear Craig's Bond mention fighting Goldfinger, the villain in Connery's film. For all intents and purposes, Connery and Craig play different versions of the same character who have different life experiences. It's not as if Connery's Bond is the grandfather of Craig's Bond; all the Bond films take place within one extremely long history.
The Destiny franchise also uses alternate timelines, alternate universes, and different retellings of the same period in history to maintain core concepts and themes while still being allowed to introduce new characters and storylines. That said, we will try to mention when there is continuity or a connection between different anime works, such as when one film ties into another film or a film continues the story of one of the many Destiny TV series, etc.
2010 - Fate/stay night: Unlimited Blades
This 2010 film tells the story adapted from one of the three narrative paths of the visual novel game, Fate/Stay Night. It is a standalone film that tells the story in its entirety. In this film, Shirou Emiya, a teenager, is the protagonist. His ally and romantic interest is Rin Tohsaka. In this story, Shirou Emiya unexpectedly finds himself thrust into a battle royale called the Fifth Holy Grail War.
2017 - Fate/kaleid liner Prisma☆Illya The Snow Oath
Fate/Kaleid Liner Prisma☆Illya is a multi-season anime series that tells the story of a parallel world to Unlimited Blade Works . In this world, a girl named Illyasviel (Illya) is the main protagonist. In Snow Oath , an alternate version of Shirou Emiya (but not from the UBW (world)) tells Illya about the events he experienced. You don't need to watch this movie to follow the events of the Fate/Kaleid Liner Prisma☆Illya anime series. And you don't have to watch Fate/Kaleid Liner Prisma☆Illya to enjoy any of the Fate/Stay Night works.
2017 - Fate/stay night The Paradise of the Senses: I. Flower of Omen
This film is part of a trilogy, adapting a different route of the Fate/Stay Night game from Unlimited Blade Works . Just like in UBW , Shirou Emiya is the male protagonist. In this version of the Fifth Holy Grail War, Shirou's romantic interest is Sakura Matou. This version of the Fate/Stay Night story has been described as darker and more horrific than the other two. As you may have guessed, you don't need to watch the 2010 Fate/Stay Night: Unlimited Blades film to follow and understand the events of this film.
2019 - Fate/stay night Heaven's Feel: II. lost butterfly
This is the sequel to Omen of the Flower. In this film, the Fifth Holy Grail War progresses and Shirou Emiya becomes closer to Sakura Matou. Several characters die. A must-see Omen of the Flower before this.
2020 - Fate/Grand Order - The Kingdom of the Sacred Round Table Camelot - Wandering; Agateram
This film takes place in the Fate/Grand Order universe in the Fate franchise, a timeline adapted from the hit mobile game of the same name. This film is the first part of an event called the Sixth Singularity, or the Camelot story. To fully appreciate this story, you should probably also watch the anime set in the same universe called Fate/Grand Order - Absolute Demonic Babylon Front: Babylon . However, you don't have to watch the aforementioned films to follow this story.
TBA - Fate/Grand Order - The Kingdom of the Sacred Round Table Camelot - Paladin; Agateram
The second part of Camelot's story. You should watch the anime, Fate/Grand Order - Absolute Demonic Babylon Front: Babylon and its prequel, Wandering; Agateram None
