Nero Claudius Caesar Augustus Germanicus is the real name of (Red) Saber in the Nasuverse. Since there are several other characters who resemble Nero in the Nasuverse, fans nicknamed her Red Saber to quickly differentiate her. She is not Saber of Red, a title that belongs to a character named Mordred in the Nasuverse, who also tends to wear red outfits.
Alias
Nero Claudius has several nicknames, including "Emperor of Roses" and "Whore of Babylon."
Appearance
Red Saber has light blonde hair and green eyes. Her hair is usually tied in a bun at the back with braids surrounding the bun. Her face is almost identical to Saber's (Artoria Pendragon), but her body is curvier. She is usually depicted wearing Rose's ball gown, a classically formal red dress with a large skirt and long red sleeves. The torso area of her dress is white and exposes some of her skin. The front of her skirt is white, covered in a more sheer fabric than the red portions. Her shoulder pads are puffy and oversized, while the rest of her sleeves are contoured to fit the shape of her arms.
Another popular look for Nero is when she is dressed in the Bondage Wedding Dress, as seen in Fate/Extra CCC. She earned the name Saber Bride from fans when she looks like this. In this outfit, Nero wears something resembling a modernized wedding dress. She wears a white veil and a white skin suit covered with numerous belts and straps. It comes with a light skirt that appears burnt and tattered at its edges. She has ankle restraints with short chains on them. The Unrestrained Wedding Dress is the same dress, but the top is open to her waist, revealing a large portion of her chest.
Personality
In the Fate/EX series, the protagonist Hakuno Kishinami (male or female depending on the choice) is her master. Like Gilgamesh, Red Saber is haughty and overflowing with confidence, but she considers her master her equal. Nero believes she must always speak like an emperor. She constantly wants to feel on top of the world and believes this is only possible if she doesn't do everything perfectly without fail. When asked to name all the servant classes, she is unable to do so, as she believes some are not important enough to memorize. She believes only her class, the Saber class, is valuable.
She understands that she has a different value system than most people. For example, she can't truly conceive of gentle, tender love; she only values her own selfish love. In life, she loved her people in the way she truly believed was right. But because of this, she didn't receive true love in return.
Nero dislikes being called "princess" because she believes herself to be an adult. She prefers to be called "empress." Her tone of voice is masculine, and she believes her soul orientation is actually half-and-half, meaning both genders are binary. As such, she loves Hakuno, regardless of her gender.
Roles
Destiny/Extra
In Fate/Extra , Nero is a player-selectable Servant. During the first week of the Holy Grail War, she meets Shinji Matou and Rider. She thinks Shinji looks like a talking rat. Hakuno feels bad after Red Saber and kills Shinji. Red Saber is moved by this display of kindness and comforts him about it.
Last/Still
In Last/Encore, Saber is paired with a male Hakuno. They travel to the Lunar Mile ladder and meet Shinji Matou. He explains that he is the mayor of the floor and has postponed the Holy Grail War for a period of peace between the masters. He basically says that the servants are just recyclable tools. Hakuno rejects Shinji's shady offer to break up with Saber, and a fight ensues. But Rin appears and saves Nero and Hakuno. During the game, Hakuno and Nero must climb several floors and fight masters and servants so that Hakuno can complete her goal at the end.
Destiny/Extra CCC
In the end, Saber saves Hakuno and uses Aestus Domus Aurea to create a place where she and Hakuno can marry.
SKILLS
Red Saber wields a strangely shaped sword titled Aestus Estus: The Original Flame. It is red and black.
Noble Ghost
None Aestus Domus Aurea: Anti-Team Class. Also known as the Golden Theater of the Deranged. With it, she makes three swings with her sword and then plants it in the ground. From there, she can create a mindscape, much like the effects of a Reality Marble.
Development
The character of Nero is based on a real person, Nero Claudius Caesar Augustus, who was the fifth Roman emperor from 54 to 68 AD. As such, during Red Saber's lifetime, she was known as a scheming tyrant who oppressed religious people, especially Christians.
Other appearances
The Nasuverse is a multiverse with several parallel worlds, and Nero has appeared in several distinct forms and iterations in several of these worlds.
