Fate Waver Velvet
Waver Velvet - Destiny
Background
Waver Velvet was orphaned when both of his parents died when he was young. His mother knew a little about magic, having learned some from her lover while they were dating. His mother only learned it out of respect for her mother (Waver's grandmother), so she didn't know much, nor was she a fan of the Mage's Association's belief that strong magical bloodlines were of the utmost importance to a mage's quality. She disapproved of Waver's desire to attend the Clock Tower for formal training and mentoring, but when both of his parents died, he decided to sell all of their remaining possessions to finance his studies there. He encountered students and professors, most notably Kayneth El-Melloi Archibald, who viewed him as inferior to his peers due to his weak magical bloodline. He once prepared a paper opposing the need for extensive magical training, but was ridiculed by Kayneth El-Melloi Archibald in front of his peers at a conference. This greatly motivated Waver Velvet to participate in the Fourth Holy Grail War. Fate/Zero in an effort to prove himself to the members of the Clock Tower and his peers.
After the Fourth Holy Grail War, he used what he learned from experience and his friendship with his Servant Rider to diligently study the fundamentals of magic and eventually became a highly respected teacher of the third-year students. He wished to continue rising in the ranks of the Clock Tower, but due to his mediocrity as a Mage, he remained only a teacher, albeit a formidable and respected one, though this did not matter to him as it was not his ultimate goal and desire.
Why does Waver Velvet adopt the name "El-Melloi" for his own?
Kayneth El-Melloi Archibald is killed during the Fourth Holy Grail War Fate/Zero , causing her magical research to suddenly cease. Waver decides to take her research and compile it into Lord Kayneth's Encyclopedia of Arcane Secrets. This act prevents the fall of the El-Melloi family and restores them so they can continue to live in respect. Once Reines El-Melloi Archisorte acknowledges her actions and is informed of her role in Kayneth's death, she says he is forever in her debt, and he adopts El-Melloi under her name.
Appearance
Waver Velvet was 19 years old when he participated in the Fourth Holy Grail War . Fate/Zero. He has fair skin, shoulder-length straight black hair, and green eyes. He is not physically strong, as he boasted about improving his intellect rather than his physique, so he is quite weak and thin. He is often seen wearing his uniform, which consists of a black V-neck sweater with a white shirt underneath and a blue and yellow striped tie. His pants are also black and have thin vertical stripes. He wears brown loafers. He also has a brown strap on his side, presumably for his wallet. His backpack is blue with reddish-brown stripes.
As an adult, he has longer hair that reaches almost past his collarbones. His facial features are somewhat more pronounced, and his expression is more often a glare with his eyebrows furrowed. He is seen wearing either black pants with a black button-up shirt, black gloves, a brown jacket, a red scarf draped over it, and a black scarf tied around his neck with shiny black boots, or sometimes with a red coat, draped with gold over it, a black shirt, a dark gray button-up vest, dark gray pants, and dark boots.
Personality
In his youth, Waver was frustrated by the Clock Tower's failure to recognize his genius, yet at the same time doubted himself. His experiences in the Fourth Holy Grail War (Fate/Zero) and his friendship with Rider humbled him and helped improve his self-confidence. This changed his personality enough to allow him to take the time to learn the basics of magic and eventually become a respected teacher at the Clock Tower. His near-constant scowl is likely due to his inability to rise through the ranks of the Clock Tower due to his continued mediocrity as a mage. Although he becomes a great teacher, this does not satisfy him. He has no interest in his students or their lives. Interestingly, he continues to play video games in his spare time, having started at the end of Fate/Zero when he played Admiral's Tactics, a game Rider bought to play with him and initially made fun of, but which was left in his room after Rider's death.
