Fate/Zero Episodes Season 1
Fate/Zero Season 1 Episode Summary
Episode 1: Summoning the Heroes
"The Summoning of Heroes" begins with the birth of Kiritsugu Emiya and his wife Irisviel von Einzbern, the daughter of Illyasviel von Einzbern. Kiritsugu Emiya is distraught that she is the "cause" of Irisviel von Einzbern's death, though she accepts it as "the very reason for her existence." She desires no pity and is grateful for the kind of life Kiritsugu Emiya helped create with her—one that prevented her from being treated like a mere puppet. Kiritsugu also feels he is not even allowed to hold his own child. Irisviel reminds him of his goal to create a whole new world where no one would mourn the Holy Grail. She encourages him to hold his daughter close and be proud like any other father would be.
There is then a flashback to three years ago with Kirei Kotomine, who had just lost his wife a few days earlier, learning from Tokiomi Tohsaka of a mark known as the Seal of Command on his hand that identifies him as a participant in the Holy Grail War, a battle for an ancient relic that grants wishes and gives him the ability to command a heroic servant to fight for him. Normally, the chosen ones are accomplished mages, and it is highly unusual that he was chosen as he has no connection to magic. He is also informed of the unspoken agreement to keep everything he knows about the Holy Grail Wars secret. Someone from the Holy Church is always assigned as an observer to ensure this rule is upheld. As was done 60 years ago for the last Holy Grail War, Kirei Kotomine's father has been chosen to oversee the next Holy Grail War. We also learn that the Tohsakas desire to "reach the root," which they believe is the noblest of desires to win the Holy Grail War. They sense that the other families, Matou and Einzbern, who once shared their desire, have less altruistic plans. Tokiomi Tohsaka and Kirei Kotomine pretend to be enemies but will work together to defeat the other five families so that Tokiomi Tohsaka can win in the end. Kirei Kotomine learns that he must go to Japan and be trained as a mage in order to be ready to command a hero in three years.
Time skips back only a year and Kariya Matou greets Aoi Tohsaka and her daughter Rin Tohsaka, who calls him Uncle Kariya, in a park in Japan. He inquires about Sakura's whereabouts and learns that she was given to the Matou family to fight in the Holy Grail Wars since she has the blood of a mage received through her father Tokiomi Tohsaka's lineage. The head of the Tohsaka family decided to do this and Aoi couldn't object. Kariya quickly goes to his father Zouken Matou who tells him that this would never have happened if Kariya Matou had chosen to learn the ways of the mage. Kariya makes a deal with Zouken that he will fight and win the Holy Grail War so that Sakura can return to her family and live a normal life. He agrees to use Zouken's worm technique along with the Crest Worms to speed up her training process. That's when Zouken tells her it's... a little too late. Sakura has been subjected to the crest worms for four days already—the first three days, she did nothing but scream constantly. Kariya is disgusted by the sight of her lifeless eyes—she lay there for 12 hours that day. Zouken agrees to free her if Kariya wins the war, but he will continue training her until that happens. Kariya starts by being a "breeding ground" for the crest worms to test whether he will even be able to survive.
Time then returns to the present, where the students are learning magic at the Tower of London. The professor teaches the students how magical abilities strengthen with each generation of mages in a family, making mages whose families have the oldest generation of mages the strongest. He brings this up because he wanted to too, and ends up ridiculing one of his students for submitting a paper challenging this belief and claiming that if a mage learned enough, they could be just as strong. This student, Waver Velvet, also comes from a family with only three generations of mages—essentially babies in the mage worldview. This greatly upsets Waver, and he runs into a mail clerk as he rampages down the hallway after leaving class. The mail clerk asks him to deliver a package to his instructor, but he decides to keep it instead. He learns that the rumors of the Holy Grail War are true. He reads through stacks of books in the library to learn as much as he can, including information about the seven Servant classes: Rider, Archer, Assassin, Caster, Saber, Berserker, and Lancer. He also learns that a relic is required to summon a Servant and discovers that this is exactly what was in the package intended for his instructor. Believing that the Holy Grail War would be the perfect place to prove himself, he decides to keep it and plan to summon his own Servant.
Kirei Kotomine and Tokiomi Tohsaka discuss the other mages in the upcoming Holy Grail War. Tokiomi Tohsaka isn't concerned that two of them are missing, as those chosen to round out the group aren't usually as strong as the main families. Kirei's assassin servant materializes in the room to confirm that no one has followed his master or is watching his house. He then disappears again to continue monitoring the surrounding area. Kirei Kotomine continues to talk about the pure-blood Einzbern family, which suddenly allowed a foreign mage to marry into the family nine years ago. The Einzbern mages have devoted themselves solely to alchemy, making them unsuitable for combat, which is the cause of their losses in previous Holy Grail Wars. Tokiomi, however, believes they have lost patience with their latest choice of master, Kiritsugu Emiya, whom he calls the "Mage Killer." Officially, he was a rogue mage who did not belong to the Mage Association. He is said to have spent his life as a freelance assassin exterminating mages by various means, including shooting down an entire plane because his target was on board. The scene shows Kiritsugu Emiya and Irisviel von Einzbern kneeling in a church as Kiritsugu is about to receive his relic for summoning his servant while Kirei and Tokiomi's conversation continues.
Next, Kiritsu Emiya is shown researching the other masters. He mainly focuses on Kirei Kotomine, whom he fears as he also sees him as a ruthless mage killer as well as someone who has studied in a variety of magical disciplines, but just before mastering one, he changes his focus and never looks back. He doesn't understand why he would do that. Both Kiritsu Emiya and Kirei Kotomine are shown questioning the behavior of others and their desires for the Holy Grail.
Next, Kariya Matou is shown lying in the fetal position on the floor next to a tray of food. Zouken Matou enters to assess his progress. Kariya doesn't have a Command Seal on his hand, marking him as a chosen master for the Holy Grail War, but he doesn't look well at all. His hair has turned white, and he's incredibly weak due to the Crest Worms inside his body moving under his skin. He survived an entire year, and Zouken congratulates him, telling him that he has his relic prepared.
Waver Velvet is then shown in a bedroom, excited and happy to have a Command Seal of his own. He decides to prepare to summon his servant. He wakes up the next morning to have breakfast with his "grandfather" and "grandmother." Once they notice his new Command Seals, he offers them coffee, and after they examine him, they pass out. He complains about having to hypnotize them again. They aren't really his grandparents... He only made them think they were.
The scene returns to Kiritsugu Emiya looking at his relic—Excalibur, Arthur Pendragon's legendary sword. It is said to be able to heal his sword wounds as well as halt the aging process when powered by the mana of its original wielder, King Arthur. Kiritsugu states that his servant and the sword are merely a tool, and that thinking otherwise will leave the master unable to win the Holy Grail War. He also notes that he could benefit from the sword's healing powers when used with his servant. He believes he will have the strongest servant in the battle.
Rin is seen pulling her suitcase and saying hello with a scowl in return for Kirei Kotomine's greeting as she packs her bags to live with the Zenjou family for a while. She knows he is staying to fight alongside his father Tokiomi Tohsaka and asks him to promise that he will keep him safe from harm, which Kirei declares he is unable to do. Tokiomi Tohsaka then shows Kirei Kotomine the relic he obtained—a fossil of the world's first-ever snake shed skin.
Kariya Matou stands in the doorway of Sakura Matou's room. His body shows signs of damage, including his eye and the arm he is holding. His hair is still white, and he walks with a limp. Sakura comments on this and says that she doesn't need to go to the Crestworm Pit as there will be a more important ceremony for her to attend. He goes to the basement instead. She asks him if he's going somewhere far away, but he promises that once his work is finally done, he'll go somewhere with her, her mother, and her sister to just have fun. Sakura says that she has no family, and her grandfather said it would be best if she thought they never existed. Kariya hugs her and reassures her that she will see them again. He gives her his word.
Kariya Matou and Zouken Matou are seen in the basement about to summon his servant with the addition of "madness affinity" to the summoning to try to enhance their abilities. Waver Velvet is also seen in a forest using his stolen chickens for the blood needed to create his summoning circle. Quick cuts also show Tokiomi Tohsaka and Kirei Kotomine at their summoning circle as well as Kiritsugu Emiya and Irisviel von Einzbern at Kiritsugu's house. Kirei Kotomine summons the archer Gilgamesh, Kiritsugu Emiya summons King Arthur Lancer (who appears in the form of a woman), and Waver Velvet summons the horseman Alexander the Great. The episode then ends.
Episode 2: The False First Shot
The episode opens with Waver Velvet berating Rider for breaking the shutter door after stealing books for him. Rider looks at the map books to prepare for war and wishes to know where all his former territories are. He wants to conquer every land they pass through as they travel across Earth to Macedonia and Persia. He asks Waver what he wants to do with the Holy Grail, as it would be his enemy if he also wanted to conquer the world. Waver tells him he just wants his peers at the Tower of London to admit they were wrong. Rider finds this petty, narrow-minded, and stupid. Waver almost uses his Seal of Command on him out of anger, but remembers it can only be used three times. Rider then shows Waver his strength by swinging his sword, which causes the streetlights to flash and a lightning bolt to fall from the sky and dissipate to reveal Zeus's chariot.
Meanwhile, Kiritsugu Emiya and his daughter Illyasviel von Einzbern search for chestnut buds in the snow together while Saber looks out a window of the mansion and Irisviel von Einzbern makes tea. Saber is surprised because she felt Kiritsugu had a colder heart than he showed. They talk about the shock Kiritsugu and Irisviel felt when they saw that Saber was a woman. Saber explains how she pretended to be a man, and Irisviel reassures her that Kiritsugu won't underestimate her abilities just because she is a woman. However, she believes that what Kiritsugu is upset about is the people who forced Saber to become king, and that she took it upon herself as her destiny. Saber doesn't think she has the right to question the decision people made in her time. In response, Irisviel worries that the two will never get along. Saber reveals that her wish is similar to Kiritsugu's and believes their wish is something she can be proud of. She wishes she could save Britain since she wasn't able to do so while she was alive. In the forest, while she's on her father's shoulders, Illyasviel asks her when she'll see him and her mother again. He places her on the ground, then hugs her, asking her to promise to wait for him even if she feels lonely. Her mother had told Illyasviel earlier that it would be a very long time before she saw her again, but that she would always be with her.
In a dark room where the news is being broadcast, a young man is working on his summoning circle to summon a demon by using his foot to draw a bloody pentagram on the floor. The news reports a murder involving a bloody pentagram found in the house, implying that the young man had failed to do it properly before and was trying again. There are buckets of blood in the room and dead men with their eyes open. A young boy is tied up and suffocated on the floor in a corner, moaning. The summoner introduces himself in a creepy, joking manner as Ryuunosuke Uryuu—a demon! He also asks him, though the child cannot answer, that if he can find a demon, will he let him kill him? But his sadistic pleasure is interrupted when his servant is summoned from his circle. Ryuunosuke introduces himself by saying his name, that he does odd jobs, and that his hobby is murdering all kinds of things, especially children and young women. The servant also talks about the Holy Grail, but Ryuunosuke has no idea what he's talking about and offers him the child to eat. The servant smiles at the child and unties him, telling him he can leave the room, but once he sees the door and sheds a tear of happiness, he consumes him with a tentacle attack while he screams. He deliberately wanted to feel and taste a new terror—the moment when the sublime abode transforms into despair. Ryuunosuke is extremely impressed, and although he knows nothing about the Holy Grail, he says he's with him and wants to see other ways to kill. The servant introduces himself as "Bluebeard."
Later that night, Kirei Kotomine speaks to his servant Assassin atop a hill about Caster Bluebeard, the final servant summoned, marking the beginning of the Holy Grail War. He orders him to leave immediately and head to the Tohsaka Mansion to eliminate Tokiomi Tohsaka immediately, turning on him whenever he can. The Assassin gracefully disables the numerous traps outside the mansion while dodging each of the trigger beams until he reaches the crystal energy source that painfully shatters in his hand after Gilgamesh throws his spear through it, pinning his hand to the top of the pillar. He then sends another one to his face, telling him he has no right to look at him. The Holy Grail War has begun.
Episode 3: Fuyuki City
The scene opens with Tokiomi Tohsaka humbly explaining to Gilgamesh that he asked him to fight Assassin to demonstrate his strength and help him decide who to fight first. Gilgamesh thought this was trivial, but complied and decided to spend some of his time wandering around, as he finds the current era quite interesting but also disgusting. He wants to find treasures worthy of his collection, and if he were summoned to a world without such treasures, he would take it as a great offense, but Tokiomi reassures him that the Holy Grail will satisfy his tastes.
Waver Velvet is excited to share this news with Rider, who snacks while looking at the military planes with books about the military all around him in a relaxed manner. Rider doesn't care about Assassin's death, as he didn't think he had to worry about it anyway. He is, however, interested in who defeated Assassin. Waver tells him that his Noble Phantasm seemed unique because instead of having a single special weapon or powerful move, it was able to throw tons of different weapons at the Assassin. Rider is excited to defeat him and chooses to chase down minions one after another as they go after the shiny gold minion Waver mentioned, assuming they all know him by now too.
Back at the Holy Church, Kirei Kotomine requests asylum and is granted it according to the rules. He is assured of his safety but still requests that a guard be posted, which causes a female Assassin to appear. She also reports that four magical presences were felt at the scene when asked if anyone had seen him. Other Assassins begin to appear and wonder why a servant did not see the battle, which Kirei Kotomine claims he wanted. They declare that once the other Masters lower their guard, they, the Heroic Shadow Spirits, will appear behind them.
Irisviel von Einzbern is seen stepping off a jet that has landed in Kiritsugu Emiya's home country. They arrive together to convince the other masters that she is Saber's master. Saber is dressed in an all-black suit with her hair pulled back in a low ponytail. Saber reveals that she is not very impressed with the country or the plane because when she is summoned back then, she is given information about it and, as one of her main skills, she is also able to pilot anything, mortal or divine, so she could even pilot the plane. They are driven across Japan, and while Saber wants to meet Kiritsugu, Irisviel wants to enjoy Japan a little since she has never left the mansion. She further explains that she was only a puppet created for the Holy Grail War, but that Kiritsugu showed her pictures and movies and taught her many things about places and current events in the world. Saber decides to signal the car to stop so she can escort Irisviel across Japan.
Meanwhile, Kiritsugu Emiya knocks on a hotel door. A young woman peeks out, closes the door, then quickly opens it again to let him in, closing it once more and locking it twice. She is an arms dealer and has placed all of his equipment on one of the hotel beds. She also shows him the footage of the Assassins' defeat and claims it was too good to be true. She assumes they knew a servant was coming and that Kirei Kotomine must have done it deliberately. He asks her to send a familiar to the Holy Church as close as possible without attracting Father's attention. Emiya then inspects his weapons, including a single-shot pistol that he says is still heavier than his daughter. The arms dealer embraces him, encourages him to focus solely on his task, and then kisses her, hinting at a closeness between the two.
Along with Saber, Irisviel von Einzbern looks out at the ocean and comments on how beautiful it is. They spent a pleasant day together, which they reflect on together. She comments that happiness only seems to bring Emiya pain, while Saber surmises that Irisviel would have preferred to spend the day walking with him. Saber then senses something lurking in the darkness nearby and takes it as a challenge.
Waver Velvet shivers atop a bridge while Rider enjoys the view, considering it a perfect spot to observe his enemy with a drink in hand and feeling motivated.
Back near the water, Lancer reveals himself to Saber and Irisviel. Saber transforms from her black suit into her armor with a smoky sword in hand as the scene ends.
Episode 4: The Spearhead
The scene opens with Lancer and Saber talking before the fight, and then the fight begins. Saber notices that Lancer has the ability to use Charm Magic. They exchange blows with Kiritsugu Emiya and his companion, as well as Rider and Waver Velvet, observing the battle. Interestingly, Lancer's master does not reveal himself. Emiya and Maiya decide to approach the crane from the west and east to see if Lancer's master is at the top. The battle continues with Saber paying close attention to both of Lancer's spears, hoping to determine which one is his Noble Phantasm so she can formulate a battle plan. The two are fighting somewhat blindly, as neither knows the other's identity. Saber also uses Wind Magic on her sword so Lancer doesn't know what type it is or its length. Emiya spots Lancer's master atop the warehouse roof. He says he'll take care of him, but then he's hit by a gust of wind that draws his gaze elsewhere and he sees Assassin perched atop a staircase banister.
The scene shows Kirei Kotomine talking with Tokiomi Tohsaka about the battle Kirei claims is taking place in the warehouses by the Mion River. From Assassin's observations, Kirei is able to report that Saber is a formidable opponent with all her stats at a solid A-rank and also that there is a woman with red eyes, silver hair, and white skin standing behind her whom Tokiomi refers to as an Einzbern homunculus and an artificial master. Tokiomi orders Kirei to keep someone watching her at all times.
Back on the battlefield, Lancer and Saber are complementing each other when Lancer's master is heard over the loudspeaker ordering Lancer to continue fighting and that he can use his Noble Phantasm, at which point he drops one of his spears, revealing that his longest spear was his Noble Phantasm. Lancer approaches and throws his weapon to momentarily reveal it by dispelling the magic. Lancer launches several attacks at Saber, at one point even cutting a bit of the ends of her hair, but Saber continues to block. She realizes that his spear is skimming the invisible air from her sword. Lancer tells her that he now knows the full length of her sword and that it doesn't matter if he can see her or not. Saber decides to let him lightly strike her with a poorly placed attack, believing that her armor will protect her, so she can strike him when he leaves himself vulnerable. But something is wrong. She is bleeding from the attack. Irisviel quickly heals her. The armor she thought was protecting her seems intact, and she realizes that her spear is capable of cutting magic since her armor is actually a magical barrier. She might as well have been armorless given Lancer's spear ability, and drops her armor to fight in her blue and gold dress without armor. She makes a sort of charge with her sword and propels herself forward only to see Lancer pull his other spear out of the ground, which turns out to be another Noble Phantasm. It severs her arm, and she falls to the ground.
Meanwhile, Rider doesn't like what he sees. He doesn't want Lacner to end the fight, but rather for other Servants to show up before that happens so he can see their capabilities. He would rather fight and defeat all his enemies at once than hunt them down one by one. He wants the chance to cross swords with these heroes of old, and the more he watches Lancer and Saber, the more he wants to join the fight. Rider slices through the air with his sword, calling out from his chariot.
Lancer stands up again, but she is unable to move her thumb due to a gash on her arm. Irisviel tries to heal her, but her wound isn't healing as it should. If she had kept her armor on, she wouldn't have been injured by the second yellow spear, which inflicts cursed wounds that cannot be healed. Saber realizes that he is Diarmuid Ua Duibhne, and Lancer also discovers his identity. Before they can continue fighting, Rider crashes onto the battlefield in his chariot and introduces himself regally, to everyone's surprise.
Episode 5: The Roar of an Evil Beast
The scene opens with Rider interrupting Lancer and Saber's fight. He introduces himself and offers them the chance to hand over the Holy Grail and become his allies. Lancer refuses the request due to his loyalty to his master, and Saber is insulted for interrupting their fight with such a request. Lancer's master notices Waver Velvet and reveals himself over the loudspeaker as the instructor from whom he stole his summoning relic. He threatens him, but Rider responds with an insult, saying that it would have sickened him to have a master who lacks the courage to come out and stand by his side on the battlefield. He then calls out to the other servants, telling them that he knows they are spying on the battle and that they must show themselves or be held in contempt. Kirei Kotomine and Tokiomi Tohsaka are not pleased about this.
Gilgamesh then materializes in gleaming gold, as he does so, atop a lamppost and calls out to the other dog servants, claiming that he is the one true king on Earth. Angry at Rider ordering him to say his name, he reveals his Noble Phantasm. Rider is quick to place himself in front of Irisviel in case of an imminent attack. Kariya Matou, crouching against a cement wall in a shadowy area, decides to send his servant into battle, who reveals himself to be a dark and horrifying Berserker in black knight armor with glowing red eyes. It is soon realized that the heroic spirit is under an enchantment that obscures his identity and abilities. Kiritsugu Emiya asks Maiya to keep Assassin in his sights while he searches for Berserker's master. Gilgamesh decides to fight Berserker because he was watching him. Gilgamesh throws two swords at him, but Berserker grabs it by the hilt and swings it to strike the other sword. Gilgamesh then summons 16 weapons from the sky, which he either dodges or throws with the ones he catches (except for one that doesn't do any serious damage), and even ricochets one off the lamppost Gilgamesh is standing on, knocking him down. Gilgamesh summons an even larger number of weapons, but Tokiomi thinks that using his Noble Phantasm a second time in front of the servant would be a bad idea and decides to use one of his three command spells to order him to stand down and retreat.
Berserker then grabs the fallen lamppost and throws it to the ground with Saber, which she blocks. It is revealed that whatever Berserker is holding becomes her Noble Phantasm. Berserker nearly hits her when Lancer cuts off her attack by cutting the pole, stating that he has already claimed this fight with Saber and if he continues to fight, it will be against both of them. Lancer's master, however, does not approve and decides to use a command spell to order him to fight alongside Berserker against Saber, to which Lancer is disheartened and apologizes to Saber but must comply. To take control of the situation, Kiritsugu Emiya orders Maiya to shoot Assassin for her own and he will eliminate Lancer's master. But just before the shot is fired or the battle continues, Rider charges into Berserker with his tank, knocking him to the ground where he disappears. Lancer is able to dodge the tank. Rider then calls Lancer's Master to tell him that if the fight is to continue, it will now be against Rider and Saber. Lancer is called back in response. Rider then tells Saber that she must fight Lancer first, and she knows this to be true as well, as she must kill him for the cursed wound affecting his hand to heal. She would be at a great disadvantage in all the other fights if it wasn't healed first. Meanwhile, Waver Velvet is exhausted from all the action.
Meanwhile, Emiya laughs at the fear Berserker inflicted on the Servants by entering the battle, but he coughs up blood and crest worms because of Berserker losing his temper against Saber, which can't keep happening if Emiya wants to survive. He must be able to control Berserker to live, and if he can do that, he feels he will win. Back at the church, a spy reports to Kirei that a familiar has been found spying on the church. And finally, we are shown Caster watching the battle from a crystal ball with Ryuunosuke Uryuu. Caster goes on and on about finding her soulmate, claiming it is Saber and that soon they will be together.
Episode 6: A Night of Scheming
The scene opens with Irisviel having fun driving Kiritsugu's fast car up a windy cliff with Saber. Suddenly, Saber tells him to stop the car as Caster stands in the middle of the road. They get out of the car and Caster greets them by calling Saber her holy virgin. Saber pretends not to recognize him. He introduces himself and claims that he longs for the miracle that would reunite them and even jumped back in time to find her, Jeanne. Saber replies that she doesn't know who Jeanne is either, to which Caster believes she has forgotten her past life. Saber introduces herself and Caster is convinced that she has gone mad. It seems that he is mistaking her for someone else. Saber gives him a warning after claiming that he must have already won because he believes the Holy Grail has already reunited them, which was his wish. He swears that he will remove the curse on her by making her unaware that she is Jeanne, then bows as he leaves. Kirei's spies sat in the trees watching all this happen and decided to follow their trail.
Meanwhile, Ryuunosuke is seen happily holding a surgical knife and blood on his hands as Caster reappears. Caster reports what he saw from Saber and calls for more sacrifices, starting with the 11 children they currently have, and then getting a new group. Ryuunosuke isn't too happy about the change from quantity to quality of killing, but he sticks with it.
The scene cuts to Kayneth El-Melloi Archibald berating Lancer in his hotel room for not killing Saber when his arranged fiancée, Sola-Ui Nuada-Re Sophia-Ri, interrupts and blames her for his judgment. She even goes so far as to call him a pathetic coward for hiding in the shadows and not attacking Saber's master if it was so important to kill Saber since she is apparently the strongest of the maids. Lancer cuts off the conversation by stating that allowing the conversation to go any further would be disrespectful to his master, something he cannot abide and allow given that he is a knight. A fire alarm sounds and he is alerted by phone that there is a fire downstairs. They believe it to be an attack by Saber and her master, so Kayneth orders Lancer to go find her downstairs and kill her. He then describes the entire floor, which he has magically reinforced with 24 barriers, three mana circuits, dozens of demonic spirits on duty, countless traps, and corridors with portals to alternate dimensions. He seems happy to fight with this advantage.
Outside, the other hotel guests are outside while the staff calls out names to ensure everyone has evacuated the building. When Kayneth's name is called, Kiritsugu pretends to be him. After calling Maiya, who is in another building with her sniper, he dials a number that blows up the building and he freefalls completely. Maiya reports that the target, Kayneth, hasn't moved at all and that he never evacuated the building, but Emiya can't think of a magical barrier that would protect him from a 150-meter freefall. He calls to Maiya to back away, but their connection goes static. Kotomine looks at the destruction on the same level as Maiya and begins to speak to her. He asks where the man we wanted to find is instead and throws the familiar bat found outside the church near her. She tries to fight back, but he throws a dagger that cuts her hand and knocks her pistol away. A smoke bomb goes off, and she jumps down to get away from a shaft. The smoke wasn't thrown by her, however. He was glad to have discovered that at least someone was watching over her. One of his spies appears behind him to report that they've located Caster.
Kotomine, Tokiomi, and Risei Kotomine discuss how Caster and her Master are using their magic recklessly and have killed 15 children so far. They find this dangerous as it could reveal the Holy Grail War, so they decide to try to convince the other Masters to ally with them against Caster.
Shortly after, Kirei finds Gilgamesh in his study, drinking all his wine and relaxing on his couch. Gilgamesh refers to Tokiomi's goal of reaching the root as being as boring as he is and asks Kirei what he would ask of the Holy Grail, to which Kirei replies that he does not have one and has no desire for it. His view is that doing things for one's own happiness is a sin that would taint one's soul. Gilgamesh replies that Kirei needs to learn what pleasure truly is and also asks him to discover the motives of the other servants. Gilgamesh disappears, and Kirei wonders if he could learn what motivates Emiya, he could also learn what he seeks.
Episode 7: The Dark Forest
The episode opens in the demolished hotel. First responders find what appears to be a ball of mercury. One of the men inserts his hand into it and appears to be possessed or commanded. He orders the others to load it into the truck.
The scene shows Risei reporting to the Master's familiars that the Masters should suspend the Holy Grail War and focus on eliminating Caster. Whoever kills Caster first will receive additional command spells, and then the Holy Grail War will continue as usual. Since there were five familiars listening at the church, Risei and Tokiomi are able to confirm that Lord El-Melloi and Lancer are still alive. They plan to let the other Masters find Caster and then, when he is weak, have Archer be the one to finish him off.
Back at the house where Waver Velvet is staying, Rider receives a package from a delivery man. He ordered a T-shirt with a world map and the words "Admirable Master Strategist" on it after hearing about mail-order purchases and wanting to try it out. Rider now wants to go out, as Waver hadn't let him before, seeing as how capable Saber was as long as she wore modern clothes. Unfortunately, Rider doesn't have any modern pants, and Waver stops him from leaving before he goes out in his boxers. They make a deal where Waver will get him a pair of pants and let him out if he kills a servant.
Emiya, Irisviel, and Saber discuss what to do about Caster. They know they have an advantage because, for some reason, Caster thinks Saber is Joan of Arc. Emiya suggests they should wait for an opening, but Saber disagrees because she wants to deal with him as soon as possible so he doesn't kill any more innocent children. Irisviel is more concerned that Saber's cursed wound hasn't healed yet and that Lancer is still alive. She suggests Saber focus on killing Lancer first. Emiya also says he doesn't trust the Risei truce because he's harboring the Master Assassin and claims otherwise. He says he might be in cahoots with Tohsaka.
Soon after, Emiya is out at night, contemplating giving up everything, returning for his daughter, and running away with her and his wife to dedicate the rest of his life to being with them and keeping them safe. But Irisviel doesn't think he can run away because he would never forgive himself for abandoning the Grail and the world. Emiya is also afraid that Kirei is after him. Maiya told him that Kirei used Kayneth as bait to lure him into the open. Their conversation is interrupted by the sensation of an attack. Back at the mansion, Irisviel uses a crystal ball to observe Caster in the forest while Kirei and Maiyu prepare their weapons. Caster has children with him and knows they are watching him. He tells them as promised that he has come for Jeanne and, with a snap of his fingers, he saves the children from the mind control they are inflicting on him and proposes to play a game of hide-and-seek in which if you are found, you are killed. Irisviel calls Saber to kill Caster immediately to save the children and Saber is seen running through the forest to begin the battle. Unfortunately, she sees dead children everywhere except one, terrified, at the hands of Caster. She asks him to free the child, which he does. The child runs to her screaming and she tells him of a castle he can run into, but before he lets go of her waist, a tentacled creature explodes from her back and binds her. More creatures appear all around her. She declares that the battle with him is no longer about the Holy Grail.
Caster continues to say that she forgot who she was. He's just confused. Saber breaks her bonds and begins fighting him. She begins by slicing through the tentacle creatures that cover the battlefield. However, they immediately return. She wishes she could use her left hand. Emiya tells Maiyu to get Irisviel out of the mansion because it's not safe for her. Saber wonders why Caster has such unlimited mana and realizes that her Noble Phantasm provides it in the form of a book. He continues to see her, forgetting who she is and the relationship they had together. She continues to fight all the creatures, but they bind her again. Then suddenly, Lancer appears. He frees her from her bonds. He tells Caster that he is the one who will kill Saber. Caster says that he belongs to her, however. Lancer tells Saber not to get the wrong idea. He is only there to kill Caster because he was ordered to. They decided to team up and fight Caster.
Meanwhile, Kayneth is outside the mansion and enters using some kind of mercury-like substance he calls Volumen Hydragram. He calls out to Emiya and advances, which sets off a ton of traps, but the mercury ball that follows him immediately creates a shield to protect him. It can also pass through door locks to search for him, and he can use it to stand up to move up or down. It also has an explosive element. Emiya quickly escapes by manipulating his body's time. He runs away and hides behind a corner, but the mercury is still looking for him. He uses Time Alter: Triple Stagnate to slow his heart rate and breathing so much that the mercury can't detect him as a living being. He has no eyes. Kayneth comes around the corner and Emiya shoots him, but he manages to put his mercury cover back on.
Episode 8: The Mage Killer
The scene opens with Irisviel and Maiyu heading into the forest. Irisviel senses that Kirei Kotomine is also in the forest, and the two agree that they must protect Emiya. That they cannot let Kirei get to him. There seem to be hints that they both have feelings for Emiya, though neither is angry with the other about it.
Meanwhile, in the mansion, Emiya shoots Kayneth, who is maintaining a barrier to block bullets. Emiya thinks he's stupid enough to make the same attack that was useless before. Then Emiya takes out his special weapon, which has its special bullets, and fires one at Kayneth. However, the bullet pierces the barrier, much to Kayneth's surprise. Emiya runs to the corner while Kayneth holds his bleeding shoulder. Kayneth realizes how serious the situation has become and declares he's going to up his game.
Back in the forest, Maiyu shoots Kirei and, thinking she has knocked him down, approaches and gets stabbed in the leg with a knife. Kirei then punches and kicks her, knocking her to the ground and making her cough up blood. Maiyu wants her to run away, but Irisviel doesn't want her to and uses a special ability that resembles a cord of light that she calls Shape Ist Lebel which transforms into a bird with glowing cords. It flies towards Kirei and then binds her arms. He runs after her but she controls the cords, throws him into a tree and binds him there. It seems like things are going well for the girls, until Kirei moves the entire tree. Kirei then breaks his restraints like it's a piece of cake and goes towards Maiyu. She draws her gun but he kicks her in the face.
Next… Saber and Lancer try to figure out how to deal with Caster since they're surrounded by her creepy tentacle creatures, and getting through them will require a lot of mana. Saber decides to use one of her powerful moves to blast the creatures away, allowing Lancer to take advantage of the opportunity to fly through the hole and, with his spear, cut through another one of Caster's horrific Noble Phantasms, raining… a lot… of blood all over the battlefield as the creepy creatures explode.
Then there are explosions... at the mansion. Things are getting more and more intense. Kayneth and his powerful, shiny silver Volumen Hydrargyrum walk through the halls destroying walls to find Emiya, which works. Kayneth thinks he knows how to handle the bullet if it hits him again and wastes Emiya's time by telling him that we'll torture him again and again before he finally dies. Emiya isn't having it and fires his automatic pistol (not the special bullets) while Kayneth yells "FERVOR MEI SANGUIS!" and cowardly hides behind his wall of shiny silver Volumen Hydrargyrum. But then... Emiya turns around and fires another special bullet from earlier.
The scene cuts and before Saber can deliver the final blow to Caster, he sees a huge waterfall of blood. Lancer says he has to leave too because his master is in danger. Saber tells him to go save his master and he says he owes her.
FLASHBACK. A woman explains to a young Emiya what these bullets really are. He doesn't look well. They contain a bit of his crushed ribs, and when they penetrate a mage or a mage tries to deflect them with magic, their origin severs their magic circuits, rendering them unable to use magic again. The more skilled the mage, the more the circuits will explode. The mage will never be the same. This woman made 66 of these origin bullets. He has 66 origin shots.
TIME SKIP TO PRESENT MOMENT. Kayneth vomits blood. His plan to protect himself from the bullet using a fancy barrier from his Volumen Hydrargyrum has backfired, and he can feel it. Talk about instant regret. The entire mass explodes, and he screams, scratching his body as more and more blood falls to the ground, which he also falls into. His eyes twitch. Emiya approaches... BUT LANCER IS THERE!
Lancer says he could easily kill him right where he stands, but he can't because he's a knight. He honorably grabs his master and then jumps out the window, running.
Irisviel is strangled by Kirei for answers. He knows she is a homunculus charged with protecting the Grail Container. He wants to know who ordered her to fight. Maiyu still has some life left in her and grabs her by the ankle. Then an Assassin appears and tells her that Lancer and Caster have left the forest and that Saber is closing in on her position. Kirei stabs Irisviel with his three long daggers. He knew it was too dangerous to stay and runs away.
Irisviel wakes up and Saber is holding her face. Saber tells her that Kirei escaped, that Maiyu is injured but will survive, but that Irisviel is the one she's worried about because she's lost a lot of blood. However, there are NO injuries?! This is then explained in a flashback. The Excalibur's scabbard has healing properties as long as Saber is nearby. Emiya told her to keep it inside her at all times, but Saber is unaware of this. As soon as Saber got close to her, the scabbard began using its healing powers. Irisviel then stabilizes Maiyu. They fear that Kirei is just as dangerous, or even more so, than they thought. Together, they vow to keep Emiya safe. Cue the ending theme.
Episode 9: Master and Servant
The episode opens with a flashback for Lancer. We see his king celebrating his daughter's engagement to a man she doesn't want to marry. She falls in love with him, and the king says he'll pay for being a traitor. The woman wants to run away with him, and he wants to protect her. He thinks the king accepted their love, but it was a lie. He never forgave her, and he killed him. However, this dream isn't a flashback... IT WAS A DREAM! A dream Kayneth was having! Cue the opening theme... Grab some snacks.
We find Kayneth talking again to his fiancée Sola-Ui about the dream he had. His head is bandaged. He remembers trying to defend himself with his Volumen Hydrargyrum power but doesn't understand what happened to him. Sola-Ui explains, rather bluntly, that all the magical circuits in his body have shorted out and he will never be able to use magic again. She was only able to save his internal organs. She makes it even clearer by telling him he will never be able to cast another spell. She tells him to stop crying because it's too soon to give up. She says they just need to win and then they can return everything to normal, and asks if he can give her his command spells. He says he trusts her but doesn't think Lancer will swear allegiance to him. She thinks that should be a problem. But Kayneth says Lancer has stated he has no desire for the Grail. Sola-Ui then begins torturing him by breaking his little finger... She says he can agree to give her the Command Seals of his own free will or she will simply cut off his arm.
Meanwhile, Maiyu looks injured in bed with bandages on her forehead, neck, and eye. Irisviel gives her healing energy and pulls up her blanket. Irisviel goes to talk to Emiya, but before she does, Saber asks her to tell him to prioritize Caster because she doesn't want more innocent people to die at her hands. Emiya tells them all to stay put while he leaves and finishes off Lancer's master, whom he still believes to be Kayneth. He already knows what Saber asked, but objects because it's not their priority.
Back with Sola-Ui, Lancer asks about his mistress Kayneth. She shows him that she now possesses the command spells, but Lancer says he's a knight first and a servant second. He doesn't want to change those he honors and owes. Sola-Ui gives him her best puppy dog eyes and begs him to fight by her side. She says it will only take a miracle to cure him, so if Lancer cares about him, he should fight by her side so he can give her the Grail to cure him. Sola-Ui swears that's why she wants the Grail, and while it's not very convincing, Lancer seems easily fooled and accepts the deal.
For the first time in the episode, Rider and Waver Velvet make an appearance. The scene shows them both eating with Waver's "grandparents." Waver is grumpy because he told Rider he had to dematerialize, but Rider says he couldn't have gotten the vials of water from the points in the river that Waver requested. He also says he got some pants. Waver performs alchemy with water and is able to track a mage thanks to the magical residue in the water that comes off from spells. He sees where the magic ends, and Rider remembers there used to be a large sewer hole there. They think it's probably a lair for Caster. Rider compliments him on his technique for discovering everything. He says he's filled with pride for his simple method, rather than a large, complex plan, when it's not necessary. They decide to venture into the tunnel. There are more of these creepy tentacled creatures. Once they get inside, Rider tells Waver it's probably best if he doesn't look. Waver decides to do it anyway. He creates a little light with a magic pod, but then splatters the floor with blood. The whole floor is bloody. There's also a shoe. A creepy shoe. Waver vomits. Rider tells him this isn't the time for stoicism and that he'd beat up anyone who looked at this without flinching.
And then BAM. They're under attack! There are Assassins in the lair! Rider immediately springs into action to protect Waver. They now know that Assasin is alive. A couple disappears, but Riber says to stay vigilant. They have no idea how many people are there. Even if they could find clues in the lair, they have to leave. The lair has too many advantages for an Assassin. They decide to burn everything down and royally ride out on Rider's chariot from a sea of flames. And the only shoe... it's burning. Rider knows that Caster will now be forced out into the open and takes this as a victory.
Episode 10: Rin's Great Adventure
Rin's Big Adventure is an episode that focuses on Rin Tohsaka, Tokiomi Tohsaka's daughter. It begins with a flashback of Rin trying to focus her mana on a crystal that she accidentally breaks. After the opening credits, we are brought back to the present at school. Rin is protecting her friend Kotone from bullying. The scene cuts to her father, Tokiomi, who teaches her that she must focus her mana or it will rebound, affecting not only her but also those around her. He says that it is important, the essence of the Tohsaka family, to use one's mana with composure and grace. Back at school, her friend thanks her for helping him. Then we return to the father-daughter duo. Her father is able to shape the crystal into a horse. Rin wants to learn, but he says it is too difficult for her right now. She just needs to practice every day and she will succeed. She is a member of the Tohsaka family after all. At school, everyone asks Rin to help them with their homework, and Rin is happy to help. There's a short montage of Rin practicing and Kotone playing. Then we get another flashback where Tokiomi explains to Rin and her mother that they have to leave Fuyuki City because it's going to get too dangerous for them. Rin isn't happy about this. She wants to be able to help. She decides she just hasn't learned enough and goes downstairs to read some books. She realizes there's a lot she doesn't know. Then she opens a book and a ton of black handprints appear on it. She can't close it. Magical arms come out and try to pull her inside. Tokiomi runs inside and saves her. He tells her that some objects are imbued with so much mana that she can't manipulate them yet. He gives her a compass and shows her how to identify such objects. The compass normally points nowhere unless there is a magical item nearby imbued with mana. He says that once the Holy Grail War is over, he will give her a proper education in gem magic.
She is seen at school again, noticing that strange things are starting to happen. Children are starting to disappear. Classes are starting to be canceled. And she even saw that one of her classmates has been killed. He isn't even in the coffin because the death was so horrible. She decides to call home, but she just gets the message. She hops on a train and goes to Fuyuki City. She feels like everything looks totally different at night. A feeling she doesn't like. Her compass is spinning and spinning, which means there are traces of mana everywhere. But she has to find Kotone! Kotone is missing. She runs down the street and then looks into an alley. She sees a man walking with a boy, which she finds quite suspicious this time at night. This man is Ryuunosuke Uryuu. She follows him and sees that he has another child with him. They seem to be mind-controlled. She is also almost seen by a police car. Rin knows she can't save them simply by sneaking around, so she boldly runs in the direction of the mana compass, which leads her to what appears to be a closed bar.
Her compass is flashing and spinning because of what's happening down there, but she still goes down the steps. She screams at the sight of Kotone on the floor. Something's been done to her. Her eyes are blank, and she doesn't speak. She looks up and sees Ryuunosuke there. He throws two other kids aside and then asks if she'd like to "join the party." She notices there are a ton of other kids zoned out around the bar. She's not about to go down without a fight and starts throwing things at him. She notices he's controlling them with his bracelet and grabs it. She's almost controlled by him but fights back. She remembers that if she uses enough mana, she can destroy something. Her compass necklace floats in the air from all the mana she's charging into the bracelet at once, shattering it! Ryuunosuke screams in pain, covering his eyes, and all the kids wake up. She tells them to run! The cops arrive and help the children but Rin has left the scene.
She's about to go home, but her compass goes crazy, and she sees something is wrong with her ability to manage. A scary tentacled creature falls to the ground! Then hundreds of flying crest worms fly in front of her, and Kariya Matou stands in front of her, coming to her rescue. Her mother is seen frantically driving toward Fuyuki City, worried and in disbelief that her daughter went there. She sees Rin resting on a bench in the park from their first scene in the anime and also sees Kariya. She is shocked by his appearance. He tells her that this is the magic of the Matou family. He also explains how he is sacrificing himself so that Sakura and everyone can play together again in the very park they are in. Rin wakes up and tearfully apologizes to her mother for coming to Fuyuki City. Assassin watched the entire scene and reported it to her master, who told her to follow the trail of Berserker's master, Kariya.
An ending montage follows Rin saying that she needs to learn more but she believes that one day she will become a powerful mage if she continues to work hard.
Episode 11: Grail Discussion
The episode opens with Irisviel walking through the damaged mansion and realizing that Rider is on his way. She becomes weak and falls, resting on a wall. Saber and Irisviel meet Rider in the mansion's entryway. He says hello to Rider and that he doesn't want to fight, but rather shares a drink with her. He has a huge keg with him. They sit together in the courtyard and share a drink. Their conversation turns to the Grail. Rider doesn't think war is necessary. He thinks the problem can be solved if they simply speak with one other to agree on who has the highest rank. Gilgamesh then materializes. Rider had invited him. He arrived late. Rider offers him a drink, but says it's not to his taste. He then materializes a golden jug and golden glasses for everyone. They all sip, and it's delicious. Rider wants to know the reason why everyone is seeking the Grail. Gilgamesh says it's irrelevant because the Grail is his. Everything is his. The treasure is his. He doesn't even know all the items he owns. But, They. Are. All. His. Giglamesh has no wishes to grant. He just wants the treasure.
Saber then asks Rider why he wants the Grail. He reveals that he wants to be reincarnated, which greatly surprises her master because he had told her he wanted to conquer the world. Saber believes that this is not how a king should act, and Rider responds by questioning her reasoning. She says she wants to change Britain's destiny of destruction. She wants to alter history itself. Gilgamesh laughs at her. She tells them not to laugh at her, but their vision of a king is very different. They believe a king should be a tyrant. That they should not regret the fall of their reign. That a king should offer no sacrifices. That his country and his subjects should offer themselves for him. And not the other way around. Saber believes that ruling a country means giving up living your life for yourself. She says he seeks the Grail out of pure selfishness and only rose to power to satisfy his own greed. Rider says no one can admire his martyred life. He believes a king should live a life to the extreme, unlike any normal person, so that ordinary people will envy and admire him, wishing to be like them. We see a flashback of Saber on a battlefield, bloodied and defeated, with the entire army dead around her. He says she is not a real king, but a naive little girl.
Then another presence is felt. Assassin! And many more Assassins appear—all over the park and even on the rooftop. They are “shadows.” They are a heroic spirit with multiple personalities, each incarnate. Rider offers them a seat to talk and drink, but they throw a dagger into his serving ladle, to which he responds by saying he will spill their blood the same way they spilled the wine. He uses a special power that casts a bright light, and everyone then finds themselves in the sand dunes of a desert. Irisviel calls this power a “reality marble.” He has summoned a vision of his spirit into the real world. Then, Ride’s immense army approaches, their souls returned to the world as heroic spirits still pledging allegiance to Rider. This is Rider’s greatest Noble Phantasm—Ionioi Hetairoi. Each of the soldiers whose numbers disappear from view is a servant of Rider and therefore of Waver Velvet. Rider's faithful steed, a black horse, also comes to his side. He then turns to the Assassins to fight them. The desert gives him all the advantage and the Assassins none. His army attacks and kills them. Some run but are cut down by spears. Others fight but are slashed by swords, and some are cut down without a fight, knowing there is no hope. Rider defeats Assassin. They all return to the courtyard, and Rider continues drinking, commenting on how uninteresting the battle has turned out to be. He then leaves, but tells Saber that he no longer sees her as a king and that she is "a little girl who needs to wake up from her dream." However, Gilgamesh, after Rider leaves, gives her words of support and encourages her to follow her dream, then dematerializes. But Saber still has self-doubt growing in her heart.
Episode 11: Grail Discussion
The episode opens with Kirei Kotomine discussing with Tokiomi Tohsaka the defeat of Assassin and the immeasurable Noble Phantasm used by Rider. Tohsaka says that now is the time to act on Rider with Gilgamesh given the information gathered by Assassin. The opening theme plays.
When the credits end, we meet Kiritsugu Emiya in a hotel talking on the phone with Maiyu, who reports that all the Assassins took part in this battle, meaning the Assassin has been completely defeated. While eating a hamburger, Emiya looks at all the information he pinned on the wall about Kariya Matou and thinks it's best to leave Matou alone for now, if only to keep Archer and Tohsaka under control. He also notes that Lord El-Melloi should now be effectively neutralized, but Lancer is still active, so he needs to find out who his new master is as quickly as possible. He also doesn't know Caster's latest location, though the child abductions continue, so he knows their rampage continues. Rider's ability to travel in his chariot makes him difficult to track, and his Ionioi Hertaoiroi worries Emiya. He believes he is Kirei Kotomine's target, but doesn't know why.
The scene takes place as Kirei Kotomine enters his office and sees Gilgamesh relaxing on the couch and drinking his wine. Gilgamesh says he doesn't care about the Holy Grail because something more interesting has caught his eye, and that's Kirei. Kirei explains to him what happens to Command Spells in several different scenarios, such as when a Master loses their Servant or vice versa. A Master takes refuge in the Holy Church because if the Holy Grail must choose another Master for a Servant, it usually chooses someone who was once a Master. This is why in the Holy Grail War, people seek not only to neutralize Masters but to kill them. Kotomine doesn't believe he will be given more Command Spells because he believes he has already fulfilled his goal of providing the Tohsaka family with important information and has faith that Tokiomi has already formulated a strategy that will defeat all other Masters and Servants.
Meanwhile, Saber takes the opportunity to drive Irisviel's car, which she finds wonderful. She takes Irisviel to their new base. It resembles a slightly dilapidated traditional Japanese building in a rural town. The grass surrounding it is overgrown, and Irisviel remarks that it resembles one of Japan's traditional haunted houses. Maiyu gives the keys to Saber instead of Irisviel at Irisviel's request, and she asks about a rusty key that stands out from the others. Maiyu says it belongs to an old warehouse in the backyard. Upon inspection, Irisviel believes it presents many obstacles for a mage's base. She says all the open space will dissipate too much mana. Although the earthen warehouse in the back is old and cramped, it has been declared safe by Maiyu, and when they enter it, Irisviel is glad to have it as a magic workshop. She begins ordering Saber to help her set it up. Saber asks Irisviel why she's been deliberately avoiding touching anything all day or if she imagined it. She wants to be able to protect her if something goes wrong. Irisviel apologizes and tells her that it's true that something is wrong. She holds Saber's hand and squeezes it with all her might, but it's almost nothing. Irisviel is very weak. Just getting dressed in the morning was brutal. She shut down her sense of touch because she doesn't feel well. Being able to do this has the advantage of being a homunculus. Irisviel tells her that it's like a structural defect from the creation of her body. Since she's not a normal human, she can't go to the doctor. From now on, she'll need a lot more help from Saber. However, she believes that she lies within a magic circle properly connected to Earth's ley lines and that her condition may improve. Saber sets to work to help her.
Kirei Kotomine is again seen talking to Gilgamesh about Saber's master. He sees him as a mere mercenary hired by the Einzberns. Gilgamesh also sees him as a bastard with a pathetic reason for obtaining the Holy Grail. Kirei is upset that after all the effort he put into finding out their motives, Gilgamesh doesn't have a better answer. Gilgamesh says he is a man who has yet to understand the meaning of joy, but even if this is true, his subconscious instinctively seeks it out of curiosity or interest. He says her words have revealed where the greatest interest lies: Kariya Matou. He also asks if he could imagine a scenario where Berserker and his master, by miracle and pure luck, survive until the end and tell him what would happen, to which Kirei thinks for a moment. Gilgamesh then says that the real reason he was asking was to show that if he had asked the same question about any other master, he would have immediately replied that the exercise was useless, but that was not the case with Kariya. He let his mind wander. Gilgamesh simply thinks that he enjoyed the thought and now knows the meaning of happiness. Suddenly, after shaming Gilgamesh for obtaining happiness by seeing others suffer and calling him a sinner, a seal of command appears on his hand even though there are no free servants. Giglamesh tells him to answer the call of the Holy Grail as it seems to have deemed him worthy. He also says that there is no doubt now that you indeed have a wish that the Grail will grant you. He believes it is something buried deep in his heart that he is still unaware of. If he wants to obtain the Holy Grail, his wish will be revealed to him, but first he must destroy others' chances of fulfilling their wishes and make his teacher his enemy. Gilgamesh tells him he will have to start by stealing a servant from another master.
Episode 13: The Forbidden Feast of Madness
The episode opens with Rider looking out at the ocean with his troops. Then Waver Velvet is awakened by his snoring and we see the two of them walking down the street on a sunny day. Cue the opening credits.
After the opening credits, we see Ryuunosuke Uryuu in ruins after his and Caster's lair were destroyed. Caster tries to console Ryuunosuke and tells him that only a few people can understand the beauty of what they do while many others are determined to destroy him. Ryuunosuke believes that God must punish them, but Caster shouts that God doesn't punish humans, he simply plays with them. Caster sees himself as proof of this because no matter how many atrocities he has committed, his punishment never came from God but from his fellow human beings in the form of simple theft. Ryuunosuke continues by saying that he still believes God is real, even though the world is filled with so many strange and wonderful things that it can't be random. He believes that God is like an author and has a love for his art, which is the world and the characters within it, but he has the same love for the ideals of humanity, such as bravery and hope, as well as the opposite, such as despair and bloodshed. Caster is truly impressed and happy to hear this credo from Ryuunosuke. Caster then proclaims that blasphemy and praise are both forms of worship, as an author would also like to play against his villains. Caster declares that he now wants to do something even greater than ever before to entertain his heavenly author.
Meanwhile, Waver Velvet is seen in the bookstore and pulls out a book about Alexander the Great. We learn that the scene that opened the episode was a dream Waver had that actually happened. Rider left the governance and politics of his new territory to the local nobility once he saw the ocean. That was all he had wanted to do. Before he could read much more, Rider met him. Rider told him he had bought the latest book Admirable Grand Strategy video games (and console to play it on), which is also the T-shirt he is wearing. Rider sees that he has read about him and simply asks that if he wants to know anything, just ask for the genuine article.
Meanwhile, Caster stands in the middle of the river as Ryuunosuke calls out to him, excited to see what he's about to do. Caster takes out his Noble Phantasm, casts a spell, and the water begins to swirl around him. As Waver Velvet and Rider return home, Waver Velvet says he can't be proud of winning the Grail with such a powerful servant and that he would have been better off summoning Assassin instead. Rider disagrees. Waver says it would have been fine if he were dead now because at least he would have fought his own battles. Rider points out that against world conquest, they're both small, so what's the point in comparing themselves. Rider also tells Waver that his feelings of insecurity are also a sign of a good military leader. He reveals that he's never managed to see the ocean and that it's always his final destination. Suddenly, they sense a presence on the river.
As for Saber and Irisviel, Saber is seen speeding down the road to the river. She spots Caster standing with her Noble Phantasm open and him motionless as he performs some sort of incredible spell. Caster sees them and bows, welcoming "her holy virgin." Suddenly, a huge creature rises from the water, enveloping Caster as he continues to speak of his fury. Rider also appears in his chariot. He calls a truce for tonight to fight Caster. Lancer has also agreed. Saber also agrees to fight alongside them. They begin to discuss a strategy. For now, Caster provides the creature with mana so it can maintain its form, but if it finds its own food source, like you know, humans on land, it will be able to sustain itself and all will be lost. They realize they must destroy Caster before it reaches land, but Caster is inside the creature. Lancer arrives and suggests forcing Caster out of the creature. If they can unleash her Noble Phantasm, her Gae Dearg can break the spell in one hit. Rider can confront her head-on thanks to the power of his Chariot, which can travel even where there are no roads. Saber has the protection of the Lady of the Lake, so no water can hinder her, no matter how deep it is. Rider goes ahead and launches himself to strike first. Saber follows soon after and runs through the water, leaping out to land a blow.
