Synopsis

Time passes, and Haruka and Makoto enroll in university. There, they reunite with two old middle school friends, Asahi and Ikuya. However, the bonds they once shared have changed. Despite this, Haruka's memories of middle school resurface. With Haruka, Makoto works hard to achieve a new dream: to pursue a career in sports medicine. Meanwhile, Rin trains in Australia, where he meets an unexpected person. Each pursuing their own paths, they will fight to achieve their dreams.

Background

Free! The Road to the World: Yume is the fifth film in the Free! series. The staff and cast of the Free! Dive into the Future anime will reprise their roles, including Eisaku Kawanami as director, Masahiro Yokotani as scriptwriter, Futoshi Nishiya as character designer, and Tatsuya Kato as music composer. Animation will once again be handled by Kyoto Animation. The film will be a recreation of the television anime that will include a "new episode" and will be released in Japanese theaters on July 5, 2019.

Characters

Haruka Nanase (Voiced by: Nobunaga Shimazaki)

Specialty: Freestyle
Haruka is a strong but calm and stoic man who struggles to communicate his feelings. He loves the water and has a swimming style that captivates others. He gives up competitive swimming after falling out with his childhood friend, Rin, who he believes stopped swimming because of him. He rediscovers his passion for swimming when he learns of Rin's return to the sport.

Makoto Tachibana (Voice of: Tatsuhisa Suzuki)

Specialty: Backstroke
Haruka's childhood friend and teammate in the Iwatobi Swim Club, Makoto is outgoing and friendly, and knows Haruka extremely well. He has been afraid of deep waters ever since a childhood incident in which a fisherman he idolized drowned in a typhoon.

Rin Matsuoka (Voice of: Mamoru Miyano)

Specialty: Butterfly/Freestyle
A second-year student at Samezuka Academy, Rin swam with Haruka in elementary school and traveled to Australia to study and train before returning to Japan and enrolling at Samezuka. He joins his school's swim team after a reunion race against Haruka, whom he now considers his rival. His goal is to become an Olympic swimmer.

Ikuya Kirishima (Voice of: Kouki Uchiyama)

Specialty: Breaststroke
Ikuya, Nasuya's younger brother, is muscular but short. He was a member of the Iwatobi Middle School swim team along with Haruka and Makoto. After the middle school team disbanded, he went to the United States with Natsuya where he attended high school and continued swimming in hopes of becoming an individual medley competitor.

Asahi Shiina (Voiced by: Toshiyuki Toyonaga)

Specialty: Butterfly
Energetic and with a bright, dynamic personality, Asahi recruits Haruka and Makoto to the middle school team along with Ikuya. After his first year, he moves to Kyushu and becomes the captain of the Kazami High School swim team.

Nagisa Hazuki (Voice of: Tsubasa Yonaga)

Specialty: Breaststroke
Nagisa, cheerful and bright-eyed, is outspoken and has no trouble expressing himself. A third-year student at Iwatobi High School, he has admired Haruka since elementary school and joins the Iwatobi swim team in hopes of swimming with him again.

Rei Ryugazaki (Voice of: Daisuke Hirakawa)

Specialty: Butterfly
A third-year student at Iwatobi High School and Nagisa's classmate, Rei is logical and intelligent. Before joining the swim team, he was a pole vaulter on the track and field team, but he always overanalyzed his jumps and performed poorly. Although he was initially reluctant to join the swim team, he agreed after seeing Haruka's swimming.

Hiyori Tono (Voice of: Ryohei Kimura)

Specialty: Butterfly
A freshman at Shimogami University, Hiyori attended high school in the United States, where he met and befriended Ikuya. Natsuya asks him to look after Ikuya during his travels due to his poor health, which puts a strain on their relationship.

Sösuke Yamazaki (Voice of: Yoshimasa Hosoya)

Rin's childhood friend, whom they attended elementary school with, Sosuke understands Rin better than anyone. He is reserved and quiet but kind. He dislikes Haruka but tolerates him because of his ability to motivate Rin.

Natsuya Kirishima (Voice of: Kenji Nojima)

Specialty: Freestyle
Ikuya's older brother, Natsuya, is exuberant, optimistic, and kind. He was the captain of the Iwatobi Middle School swimming club. He went to the United States to attend high school, after which he decided to compete individually all over the world.

Nao Serizawa (Voice of: Satoshi Hino)

Specialty: Butterfly
Nao is Natsuya's close friend, gentle, calm, and logical. He was a member of the Iwatobi Middle School swim club until an eye injury temporarily sidelined him. Unable to continue swimming, he threw himself into coaching and pursued a career in sports medicine.

Aiichiro Nitori (Voice of: Kouki Miyata)

Specialty: Breaststroke
A third-year student at Samezuka Academy, Aiichiro is friendly and talkative, sometimes too much so. He has idolized Rin ever since he saw him swim in a competition in elementary school and wants to specialize in two strokes like him.

Momotaro Mikoshiba (Voice of: Kenichi Suzumura)

Specialty: Backstroke
A second-year student at Samezuka Academy, Momotaro is the younger brother of Seijuro and Isuzu and has a carefree personality. At first, he doesn't join the swim team, but later, after Rin's insistence, he does. He has a crush on Gou. He is given the nickname "The Sea Otter of the Sea of ​​Japan" due to his swimming ability.

Shigino Kisumi (Voice of: Chihiro Suzuki)

Kisumi was classmates with Haruka and Makoto in middle school and was also a member of the school's basketball team. He attends a different high school from the others but works with Makoto to teach his younger brother, Hayato, how to swim.

Gou Matsuoka (Voice of: Akeno Watanabe)

Rin's younger sister, Gou, is a third-year student at Iwatobi High School and joins the swim team as a manager. While easygoing and friendly, as the team's manager, she is strict but encouraging. She is fascinated by muscles and often can't help but blush or get overly excited when she sees them. Despite being the team's manager, she cannot swim.

Romio Hayafune (Voice of: Atsushi Abe)

Romio, a first-year student at Iwatobi High School, joins the high school swim club after Haruka and Makoto leave for college. He was born in the United States but moved to Tokyo before attending Iwatobi. A freestyle swimmer, he fears making a false start during a middle school competition.

Shizuru Isurugi (Voiced by: Yoshitsugu Matsuoka)

A first-year student at Iwatobi High School, Shizuru also joins the swim team after Haruka and Makoto leave for university. He is often expressionless and tired, and suffers from severe motion sickness.

Ayumu Kunikida (Voice of: Ryo Hirohashi)

Ayumu is a sweet girl who can be frank and honest to a fault. She joins the Iwatobi High School swim club to train and become the club leader, succeeding Gou. Unlike Gou, she doesn't care about muscles and prefers a little fat.

Seijuro Mikoshiba (Voice of: Kenjiro Tsuda)

A talented swimmer with an enthusiastic personality and a weakness for pretty girls, Seijuro was the captain of the Samezuka Academy swim team until graduation. He falls in love with Gou upon first meeting her.

Ryuji Azuma (Voice of: Takeshi Kusao)

Haruka's swimming coach, Ryuji, is a former Iwatobi High School student and was a member of the swim team as well as a top competitive swimmer. His competitive career ended after a certain incident.

Mikhail Makarovitch Nitori (Voice of: Hidenobu Kiuchi)

A former Russian competitive swimmer and Ryuji's longtime rival, Mikhail is a coach with a keen eye for spotting new talent and chooses those he will train based on their muscularity. Like Gou, he is fascinated by muscles. He is Rin's coach in Australia.

Albert Volandel (Voice of: Jeff Manning)

A Swedish swimmer who holds the world record in the 100 and 200 meter freestyle. Haruka meets Albert at a special training camp without knowing who he is, and the two become friends. He admires Haruka's powerful swimming style.
