Garp vs. Gol D. Roger

Garp vs. Gol D. Roger: Who is stronger and who would win in a fight?

Garp vs. Gold D. Roger: Who Is Stronger & Who Would Win?

The comparison we'll be making in this article will involve two truly epic characters from the One Piece franchise, both incredibly popular for different reasons. One of them is Monkey D. Garp, the Marine Vice Admiral who is also Luffy's grandfather, while the other is the no-nonsense Gol D. Roger. Garp and Roger have a strong bond, and in this article, we'll tell you who is stronger—that is, who would win in a fight.

Roger was likely stronger than Garp and would be able to defeat him. And even though Roger's status is legendary in the series, we don't have much information about his skills, but we still believe he would be strong enough to surpass Garp. If Garp had been able to defeat Roger in the past, he certainly would have, but Roger was only fooled when he allowed himself to be fooled. Roger was a truly legendary figure in the series, and considering how many powerful characters there are, for him to be the Pirate King means he was indeed the most powerful pirate of his generation, and that's certainly enough for us to proclaim the winner of this match.

What follows is, of course, a detailed analysis of the answer we gave you above. We will describe Monkey D. Garp and Gol D. Roger in more detail, giving you an in-depth analysis of the issue at hand and the balance of power between the two characters using our usual formula. Through several categories, you will see who is the stronger of the two and why our answer is the way it is—that is, why we are certain that Gol D. Roger is stronger than Garp at this point in the story.

Physical abilities

Garp has extremely powerful fists. In fact, they are so powerful that with a single blow, he could injure Luffy and cause him pain. Furthermore, while in his Phoenix form during the war, Garp still injured Marco. He claimed to have successfully descended eight mountains while training for Chinjao.

Garp also possesses great endurance and exceptional pain tolerance, as shown when he was attacked by Captain Morgan and survived a cut from his axe. Garp has also displayed incredible speed, possibly even faster than CP9's Soru, as evidenced by his ability to wake Luffy in such a short time while also being able to outpace all the other Straw Hats.

Due to his near-unattainable fighting strength, Roger earned the nickname "Pirate King" before his death. Only Vice Admiral Garp, who possessed incredible strength despite his age and cornered Roger several times before surrendering, and his opponent Edward Newgate, who possessed the Gura Gura no Mi and was dubbed "The World's Strongest Man" after Roger's death, were able to match Roger in combat.

He was also known for having Rocks D. Xebec as an opponent, whom Roger and Monkey D. Garp had to work together to defeat. Another example of his power is his ability to compete with Shiki. He had no problem defeating Kozuki Oden despite his serious health problem.

As mentioned, Garp is—along with Whitebeard—the only person in recorded history who has been able to match Roger's physical strength, which is saying something in itself. Therefore, to honor Garp's legacy, we'll be sharing the points in this first category.

Devil Fruit

Monkey D. Garp is one of the few characters to have such a high power level but not possess any Devil Fruit powers. Since Monkey D. Garp has never consumed a Devil Fruit, we can conclude that there is nothing more to say about this category, at least as far as Monkey D. Garp is concerned.

Gol D. Roger is a very strong person. He is considered one of the most powerful characters in the series. It's reasonable to assume that Roger has ingested a Devil Fruit, given his abilities and accomplishments, but is that really the case? No, Gol D. Roger has never consumed a Devil Fruit in his life, just like Garp. He is one of a very select group of very strong characters who have not eaten a Devil Fruit; most other strong characters attribute their distinctive reputation to their Devil Fruit consumption.

This is one of those situations where we can't give either of them a point because neither of them has anything to offer in this category. Neither of them has consumed any Devil Fruits, and from that perspective, we can only give them both 0 points here.

RIGHT

Because Garp is a Vice Admiral, he can apparently use Haki, as it's a requirement. For starters, we can verify that Garp can use Observation Haki. Dr. Fishbonen advised Koby to seek Garp's help in learning Observation Haki as soon as he awakens, as Garp is proficient enough to pass it on to others. Garp injured Luffy multiple times despite his rubber body to showcase his proficiency with Armament Haki. He also demonstrated the ability to use Conqueror's Haki during a recent confrontation with Kuzan, demonstrating how unusual it is to be able to use all three varieties of Haki.

Roger was able to use all three varieties of Haki. While the extent of Roger's use of Kenbunshoku Haki is unknown, we do know that he could use it. With the help of Busoshoku Haki, Roger could use his sword to harden and strike Whitebeard's Murakumogiri. He had mastered the technique so well that he could even use a more sophisticated form.

He was also one of the few individuals to possess Conqueror's Haki. When he and Whitebeard clashed twenty-six years ago, lightning flashed and a wind blew that could only have come from the collision of two people using this Haki. During the same encounter, Roger also demonstrated the ability to imbue his sword with a specific Haki, causing a black flash to appear on the blade.

Kizaru vs. Fujitora vs. Ryokugyu: Who is currently the strongest admiral in One Piece?

We'll split the points here to make it more interesting, but we honestly think Roger's Haki mastery was superior to Garp's, but since the latter also used all three types and was quite skilled with them, we decided to honor him in this article category.

Weapons

Garp has been seen firing cannonballs so far (including a gigantic one). The extent of his weaponry skills is that he can even use his fists as weapons. He is similar to Luffy in that he doesn't use weapons and relies solely on his physical strength (and Haki) instead of special abilities. While he is undoubtedly a better weapon user than Luffy, who is a terrible weapon user, we don't think he ranks among the best weapon users in the series.

Roger was a remarkable swordsman, as evidenced by his one-attack victory over the legendary warrior Kozuki Oden. He was also able to match the power of Whitebeard's Murakumogiri, which produced a powerful shockwave that shook the entire island and Moby-Dick. As far as anyone knows, he was one of the most skilled swordsmen in the series and was able to take on the strongest and most skilled weapon users of his time.

Garp, like Luffy, usually loses in this category, which also happened here, as Gol D. Roger outperforms Garp when it comes to weapon use. The last point simply had to go to Roger, as Garp is nowhere near Roger's weapon skills.

Points: Garp 2, Roger 3

Garp was Roger's rival, but if Roger had really wanted to defeat him, he could have defeated him.

The points made this a very close duel, and we can't help but agree. Garp and Roger were rivals back in the day, and Garp was, as we know, only one of two people capable of rivaling Roger in terms of strength. This is proof of how powerful Garp was in his younger years and why he's such a badass character.

But ultimately, Garp couldn't defeat Roger at that point. We think if he could have, he would have, but since he didn't, it's probably because he couldn't have. Roger probably never demonstrated the full extent of his powers against Garp because he respected him, and we know they had a lot of respect for each other.

This is why Garp was able to survive his confrontation with Roger back then, but if it came down to a just one-on-one fight, we think Roger would win, and that's what the points suggest as well.
