Garrison Regiment - Attack on Titan

The garrison constitutes the bulk of the army in the Attack on Titan series and aims to protect and maintain order within the walls. They play an important role in defending the walls against Titan attacks. Garrison soldiers work closely with civilians and are trained to perform a variety of tasks such as providing defensive measures with artillery and rifles, controlling gates, crowd control, evacuation, urban combat, and more.

Garrison Information

  • Name: Garrison
  • Duties: Protect and maintain order within the walls. Defend the walls against Titan attacks.
  • Notable members: Dot Pixis, Hannes, Mitabi Jarnach Kitz Weilman, Rico Brzenska, Anka, Gustav, Ian Dietrich, Floch Forster.

Responsibilities

The garrison's soldiers were tasked with protecting the inhabitants of the compound. They spent much of their time fortifying and defending their positions with cannons and rifles.

While they are tasked with reducing casualties within the Wall, they also play a significant role in deciding when to open and close the gates. Shiganshina's Fall Arc At Wall Maria, members of the garrison were seen debating whether or not to lower the gate. Lowering the gate meant leaving thousands of people at the mercy of the Titans, but also preventing the Titans from reaching the inner walls, thus protecting the lives within the inner gates ( Season 1 , Episode 2).

They are also seen controlling the massive crowds escaping on ferries, manning cannons, etc. After the Fall of Shiganshina arc is over, they are seen distributing goods and food to the refugees.

Organization

The garrison is composed of approximately 30,000 men and women. This number also includes the training corps until each member is assigned to their chosen position. However, the official number of fully trained and combat-ready soldiers is closer to 10,000. Each garrison regiment has approximately 1,000 soldiers. There are two to three regiments in a brigade, while a division is composed of two brigades. Dot Pixis was the garrison commander.

Qualities

The quality of the garrison soldiers varied greatly, and they were often compared to a commoner "given a spear and nothing else" compared to the highly trained elite guard at Wall Sheena. Joining the garrison meant you would be fed, so it was quite common for an entire family to join the garrison. Many of the garrison soldiers were former refugees, and many joined to avoid working in the labor service and on farms.

Before the attack on the Shiganshina Arc and the fall of Wall Maria, the garrison's soldiers were often considered lazy, unreliable, and undisciplined, as shown in Season 1 , Episode 1, where Eren , Mikasa , and Armin Hannes and his friends from the garrison were caught drinking alcohol and playing cards while on duty. The garrison's relaxed nature during this time was due to the fact that for 100 years, a Titan had never been seen breaching one of the walls.

However, since the fall of Wall Maria in 845, they have become more serious and disciplined in their duties to protect humanity from the imminent threats of the Titans.

Weapons

The garrison soldiers, like all soldiers in the army, were equipped with vertical maneuvering equipment and two ultra-hard steel blades. However, they also used artillery such as cannons to defend the walls against the Titans. Here is a brief list of some of the weapons available to the garrison soldiers.

  • Cannons are the most effective weapon against stationary targets because they are very inaccurate. There are three main types of shells used for cannons: simple lead shells, grapeshot shells that release lead balls when fired, and high-explosive shells that are triggered by a time-delay fuse. Other shells include flares, smoke bombs, and shot shells, which are used to capture targets.

  • Sniper rifles and firearms are used to shoot a Titan in the eyes to temporarily blind it, slowing it down considerably.

Redundant weapons

Here is a list of weapons that were available to garrison soldiers but are no longer in use.

  • Prisoner-of-war bombing involved attaching bombs to prisoners-of-war and introducing them into Titans. This practice was considered inhumane and highly ineffective.

  • Hand cannons were portable, but rather bulky, firearms. They were made from modified rifle barrels, but they were too heavy for most soldiers. It was impossible to carry enough ammunition. Their weight and design made them incredibly accurate and difficult to handle.
