Synopsis

A disgraced former soldier and survivor of the Meiji-era Russo-Japanese War, Saichi Sugimoto now lives on Japan's northernmost island, Hokkaido. Nicknamed "The Immortal" during the war, Sugimoto makes his living scouring the wilderness for riches from the gold rush. After learning of a thief who stole gold from a group of Ainu, the indigenous people of Hokkaido, and hid directions to it in tattoos on the bodies of 24 inmates, Sugimoto sets out to find the escaped convicts, aided by a young Ainu girl named Asirpa, whose father was killed by the thief. Together, they battle the elements as they struggle to survive against the wildlife and those also seeking the treasure.

Background

The historical adventure series Golden Kamuy began as a manga series written and illustrated by Satoru Noda. It has been published by Shueisha since August 2014 under their Young Jump Comics imprint and is serialized in the magazine Weekly Young Jump . As of February 2018, 12 tankobon volumes have been released in Japanese. The series is also published in English by VIZ Media under their VIZ Signature imprint and in Spanish by Milky Way Ediciones. To date, three volumes have been released in English. In 2016, the series won the Manga Taisho Award and placed second in the male category of the "Kono Manga ga Sugoi!" ranking.

The third season of the anime adaptation is directed by Hitoshi Nanba with composition by Noboru Takagi, character designs by Kenichi Onuki, and music by Kenichiro Suehiro. The anime premiered in Japan on October 5 on Tokyo MX, YTV, Sapporo TV, and BS11, and is being streamed overseas by Crunchyroll.

Characters

Saichi Sugimoto (Voiced by: Chikahiro Kobayashi)
A disgraced war veteran who served in the 1st Division of the Imperial Japanese Army and fought at the Battle of 203 Hill during the Russo-Japanese War in 1904. He was nicknamed "The Immortal" on the battlefield and was feared for his savage fighting style and incredible tenacity.

Asirpa (Voice of: Haruka Shiraishi)
A young Ainu girl who joins Sugimoto in his search for the thief who killed her father after saving Sugimoto from a wild bear attack. Her Japanese name is Asuko Kochoube.

Yoshitake Shiraishi (Voice of: Kentaro Ito)
Nicknamed the "Escape King" for having escaped from every prison he was sent to, Yoshitake Shiraishi is one of Abashiri's convicts traveling with Sugimoto. He has part of the Ainu's Golden Map tattooed on his body.

Lieutenant Tsurumi (Voice of: Houchu Ohtsuka)
An officer in the 7th Division of the Imperial Japanese Army, Tsurumi is searching for the hidden treasure of the Ainu in order to separate Hokkaido from the rest of Japan and make it an independent country. Due to Japan's treatment of its soldiers after the war and the fact that he did not receive compensation from Russia, he harbors a deep hatred for the Japanese government.

Hyakunosuke Ogata (Voice of: Kenjiro Tsuda)
A former senior soldier in the 7th Division and an outstanding marksman, Ogata is a member of Hijikata's group who later joins Sugimoto's group.

Genjirō Tanigaki (Voice of: Yoshimasa Hosoya)
A Private First Class of the 7th Division and Matagi of Tohoku, Genjiro embarks on a war to avenge the death of his younger sister Fumi, putting his family and legacy on the line. Now with a renewed sense of duty, Genjiro has made it his mission to repay the Ainu people, who sheltered and cared for him during the war, by escorting Asirpa home so she can be reunited with her family.

Toshizou Hijikata (Voice of: Joji Nakata)
A former member of the Shinsengumi, Toshizou is also one of Abashiri's convicts, with part of the Ainu Gold Map tattooed on his body. Although he is old, he is skilled in combat and ambitious. Once he finds the gold, he plans to become the leader of Hokkaido and make it a separate country from Japan.

Tatsuma Ushiyama (Voice of: Kenji Nomura)
Known as Ushiyama the Undefeated, Tatsuma is one of the inmates of Abashiri with part of the Ainu Gold Map tattooed on his body. He is a master of judo and can't help but try to date every beautiful woman he meets. He was imprisoned for the death of his former master and severely injured several of his peers after they ganged up on him for sleeping with his former master's wife. He searches for gold alongside Toshizou.

Ienaga (Voice of: Sayaka Ohara)
One of Abashiri's inmates, whose body bears part of the Ainu Gold Map, Ienaga is an art enthusiast. She joined Toshizou in his quest for gold.

Shinpachi Nagakura (Voice of: Takayuki Sugou)
Shinpachi, a captain of the Shinsengumi, served alongside Toshizou in the Shinsengumi at the time. Shinpachi is very fond of Toshizou because he looked out for him when he acted recklessly and got into trouble time and time again. He searches for gold alongside Toshizou.

Inkarmat (Voice of: Mamiko Noto)
Her name means "the woman who sees." Inkarmat is an Ainu woman and a talented fortune teller who first met Asirpa's father when she was a child. Although she can be considered devious and selfish, she cares about her close friends and the future of her people. Dressed in traditional Ainu garb, Inkarmat has a mysterious aura and piercing, mischievous eyes.

Kouhei Nikaido (Voice of: Tomokazu Sugita)
A Private First Class of the 7th Division, Kouhei is driven by his desire for revenge against Saichi for the death of his twin brother, Youhei.

Hajime Tsukishima (Voice of: Eiji Takemoto)
A sergeant in the 7th Division, Hajime serves under Tsurumi. Although his past is tainted by the murder of his father and the disappearance of his love, he can be considered the ideal soldier: serious, dedicated, polite, competent, and loyal.

Kiroranke (Voice of: Masaki Terasoma)
A veteran of the 7th Division whose true identity is Yulbars, a Tatar of Karafuto Ainu descent, Kiroranke is a revolutionary who assassinated Alexander II along with Wilk at the age of 15. He plans to use the gold to lead an invasion of Hokkaido.

Tokishige Usami (Voiced by: Yoshitsugu Matsuoka)
Tokishige is a senior soldier of the 7th Division who has undying loyalty to Tsurumi.

Otonoshin Koito (Voiced by: Katsuyuki Konishi)
Otonoshin is a second lieutenant in the Satsuma 7th Division. His father is Navy Rear Admiral Heiji Koito. Although intelligent, he is quite inexperienced.

Kazuo Henmi (Voice of: Toshihiko Seki)
Kazuo is a serial killer with masochistic tendencies.

Yasaku Edogai (Voice of: Yuma Uchida)
Yasaku is employed by Tsurumi and is a taxidermist who secretly preserves human bodies.

Maiharu is a Russian stenka martial artist who escaped to Sakhalin Island.
