About Homura Akemi

Homura Akemi is a magical girl who was hired to fight witches and was unknowingly the first person to expose Madoka Kaname to the existence of magical girls.

About Homura Akemi: Background

The audience is first introduced to Homura, who is seen fighting witches in one of Madoka's dreams. Shortly after, the two meet in the real world, and Homura explicitly tells Madoka to never become a magical girl. At school, Homura is often portrayed as cold and distant, but extremely talented in academics, sports, and more. In reality, Homura was much less confident in her abilities, but the suffering she endured as a magical girl forced her personality to change into what it is now. Although she often acts harshly towards Madoka, Homura cares deeply for her and tries to keep her from becoming a magical girl in order to protect her.

About Homura Akemi: Abilities

Homura's primary magical ability is her ability to stop time using the hourglass stored within her shield. While this can be used to dodge attacks and the like, Homura can also use this stopped time to prepare massive attacks against her enemies. Those in direct contact with Homura when she activates this ability are also immune, allowing them to move as well. Additionally, Homura can also reverse time by one month and retain her memories. Using this ability results in the formation of a new timeline, as Homura and the others make decisions different from the original timeline. Homura's shield can also store a vast arsenal of weapons, allowing her to summon weapons similar to Mami's.

Other important characters in Puella Magi Madoka Magica

Several other characters from the original Puella Magi Madoka Magica series who are particularly important to Homura include Madoka Kaname and Mami Tomoe

Madoka Kaname

Madoka Kaname is the main character of Puella Magi Madoka Magica and the main protagonist of the series. After dreaming of Homura fighting strange monsters in a dream one night, Madoka is surprised to see Homura appear as a transfer student the next day. She is often seen as a very outgoing, kind, and honest person who would not hesitate to put others before herself. Because of this honest nature, she often struggles internally with whether or not to become a magical girl, as Homura strongly warns her to avoid doing so. Ultimately, her desire to help others takes over, and she forms a contract with the mysterious Kyubey. As a magical girl, she fights witches with a bow that can fire energy arrows. This bow can also fire multiple arrows at once and can unleash a devastating barrage if desired.

Mom Tomoe

Mami Tomoe is another magical girl who saves Madoka and her friend Sayaka from a witch's familiars after the pair venture into her lair. After Mami defeats the witch, she offers to become a mentor to Madoka and Sayaka if they decide to become magical girls. Generally speaking, Mami is shown to have a strong sense of justice and will go out of her way to help others, even when there is little reward for doing so. She also often enjoys inviting others over for tea and will prepare a variety of treats for them to enjoy. As a magical girl, Mami has two main magical abilities. The first is the ability to manipulate the ribbons on her outfit. These ribbons can be used in a variety of ways, from slicing through enemies, grappling them to prevent escape, or creating platforms to improve maneuverability. Her second ability allows her to use her ribbons to summon an infinite number of muskets. Although each musket can only fire once, she can create multiple muskets at once, allowing her to fire a salvo of bullets at once.
