Synopsis

This family isn't like any other. On a remote island, two mad scientists have been conducting illegal genetic experiments on their own children, sparing only the youngest. After their parents' arrest, the children—Snow, a human-dog hybrid; Ashisu, a plant-human; Aisuri, a spider-human; Suishi, a telepath; and Tanis, a genie—are moved to another island to live with the rest of the population. There's just one small problem: they're never supposed to come into contact with the outside world, and they have no idea what "normal" is, except for Tanis, who learned it from a book! Shiyan Pin Jiating follows these siblings as they try to become a "normal family" and be accepted into human society.

Background

Originally a manhua by Hong Kong manhua artist and dog lover Yanai, Shiyan Pin Jiating began serialization in Sun Comics in August 2015 with its first volume released on January 25, 2017. The series debuted in Shinchosha Comics in October 2017 in Japan, and is also available to read online.

Anime adaptation

Produced by Dahuoniao Donghua (Big Firebird Cultural Media Co., Ltd.), the animated series will air in April 2018.

Characters

Tanis (CV: Riho Sugiyama)
Considered a genius by his parents, 11-year-old Tanis is the smallest of his five siblings and the only one not genetically modified. Not only is he generally knowledgeable, but he's also a talented inventor and medically adept. He's always wanted to see the outside world ever since he met a certain someone, and his parents' arrest provided the perfect opportunity. Crying and lacking any sense of direction, Tanis hopes that one day his siblings will be able to integrate into society.

Ashishu
The second eldest of the family, Ashisu is a 16-year-old girl with plant genes that allow her to randomly grow plants on her body. Optimistic and generous, she rarely argues with her siblings. She is particularly close to her twin sister, Aisuri.

Aisuri (CV: Nanako Mori)
Aisuri, Ashisu's younger twin sister, has been modified with arachnid genes, most visibly manifested in the four spider-like legs growing from her back. She loves to eat, especially insects, and generally speaks in a very masculine manner. She is a free spirit who hates being tied down, which often causes arguments between her and Tanis.

Sushi (CV: Yoshiko Ikuta)
The second youngest of the five, Suishi is 14 years old. Her alteration gave her the power to read minds, but she also lost her facial expressions. She doesn't trust people, and even her family doesn't know what's going on in her head. She loves reading and hates crowded places and people who think too much.

Snow
Seventeen-year-old Snow, the eldest of the siblings, merged with a white dog and can take three forms: human, canine, and an in-between form. Two personalities live within him. He is calm and caring towards his family when in human form, and he also supports his younger brother. As a dog, whom his siblings named Wan Wan, he is cowardly and afraid of thunder, though he is also much more intelligent than a regular dog due to Snow's consciousness within him.
