Kaido vs. Yamato: Who Wins in a Father-Son Battle?
Kaido vs. Yamato: Who Wins in a Father-Son Battle?

We've written many One Piece comparisons here on Proximity Japan before, and former Yonko Kaidou featured in many of them, both because he was an exceptionally powerful villain and therefore quite fitting for such a comparison, and because he fought many characters in the series, so we had something to work with. As you might expect, Kaido will also feature in this comparison, as we've decided to tell you who would win in a battle between Kaido and Yamato, his daughter-turned-son from One Piece.
And while Yamato is undoubtedly a powerful fighter with incredible swordsmanship skills, he's still no match for his father, which is why Kaidou emerges victorious in this one. This was demonstrated during their brief skirmish in Wano Country, where Kaidou managed to defeat Yamato, who was ultimately saved thanks to Luffy's arrival with Momonosuke.
The rest of this article will expand on the answer given above, as we'll compare Kaidou and Yamato in more detail. Through several categories, you'll see who is stronger and why our answer is the way it is, namely why Kaidou was able to defeat Yamato in their fight. Thanks to the One Piece Wiki for the information on some of the powers and abilities.
Physical powers
Thanks to his muscle mass, Kaido possesses enormous physical strength. He has managed to capsize nine giant prison ships. Kaido is powerful enough that his scream alone causes visible damage to the area around him. One of Kaido's greatest strengths is his inability to die; in fact, he has suffered seven defeats, been captured eighteen times by the navy or enemies, been tortured over a thousand times, and ultimately been sentenced to death forty times. However, no execution, whatsoever, has worked.
Kaido also jumped 10,000 meters from the sky to the ground, which created a shockwave similar to an explosion, strong enough to sink a nearby ship, and resulted in nothing but a headache; he is so strong that death has become a pastime for him. Kaido is as powerful as Charlotte Linlin, being able to fight on equal terms during their fight; like Shanks and Edward Newgate, Kaido and Big Mom were able to split the sky in two after a single blow. So far, no one has been able to stand up to Big Mom, which is very telling of Kaido's power.

Yamato has been shown to have tremendous physical strength, as he was able to knock out Ulti with a single swing of his mace while she was transformed. Due to his large size, he was able to easily lift Luffy and catch him with one arm while he was running. Yamato is quite fast, being able to dash with blinding speed to attack his targets, as well as evade pursuit from members of the Beast Pirates.
Yamato also possesses great endurance, withstanding blasts and direct hits without much trouble, leaving him with only superficial bruises and cuts. As a child, Yamato was able to withstand the beatings inflicted on him by his father and managed to go without eating for a time.
Although Yamato is his father's son, he is not as powerful as Kaidou. Kaidou is at such a high level in terms of physical power that even Luffy had to, in fact, unlock the true power of his Devil Fruits, which are completely ridiculous (in the best way possible), to counter Kaidou's incredible strength.

Devil Fruit
Kaido ate the Uo Uo no Mi, Model: Seiryu, a Zoan-type Mythical Devil Fruit that allows him to transform into an oriental dragon, similar to Momonosuke, the main difference being that Kaido is gigantic in size in dragon form and seems to control his transformations.
However, he cannot maintain this appearance if he takes too many powerful blows to keep up, such as the ones Luffy dealt him. He is also capable of causing lightning by roaring loudly enough. Kaido has also been shown to be able to lift the entire island of Onigashima and appeared to be able to move it all the way to the Flower Capital.

Yamato ate the Inu Inu no Mi, Model: Okuchi no Makami, a mythical Zoan-type fruit that her father Kaido had collected, and inadvertently ate it because she was hungry. This fruit allows her to transform into the "Ōkuchi-no-Magami," the deification of the Honshū Wolf, an extinct subspecies of wolf living in Japan, believed to be the protector of humans. This fruit allows her to generate a destructive breath and resembles a creature with fangs, a thin snout, and misty hair.
And while Yamato's Devil Fruit gives him a significant power boost and makes him stronger than most regular characters, it isn't as powerful as Kaidou's Uo Uo no Mi, Model: Seiryu. Kaidou's dragon is incredibly strong, which is why this point goes to him as well.

RIGHT
Kaidou is one of the few people who can control all three types of Haki. Kaidou was shown to have control over Kenbunshoku Haki by detecting the presence of Kozuki Oden on Enma as it was used by Roronoa Zoro. She also used it to detect the voices of the supernovae following her combined attack with Big Mom's, allowing her to confirm that they were still alive.
Kaidou's control is such that, like Charlotte Katakuri or Luffy, she is able to use it in advanced ways and thus see into the future. Kaidou possesses a high level of Busoshoku Haki, with Law stating that she could not directly move Kaidou to her room because Royal Haki was too strong. Her Busoshoku Haki also allows her to have skin that is virtually invulnerable to normal attacks.
Kaidou is one of the few people in the world capable of using Haoshoku Haki. Upon colliding with Charlotte Linlin using her Kanabō, they both generated a typical lightning discharge. Kaidou can use the advanced variant of Haoshoku Haki, imbuing his Kanabō with his will, which violently expels black lightning from its tip and causes it to expand towards his enemies.
Yamato is able to use all three forms of Haki, like her father, which is a very rare feat in the world of One Piece. Yamato possesses Conqueror's Haki, a very rare form of Haki. Yamato instinctively activated this Haki as a child while traveling through Onigashima, accidentally knocking out many of her father's subordinates. He will have mastered it by the time he becomes an adult, as he has been seen imbuing his Kanabō with Conqueror's Haki, which produces dark lightning bolts, while attacking Kaidou with the Raimei Hakke technique.
Yamato is also a highly skilled user of Armament Haki, imbuing it with his hand and Kanabō when attacking Hatcha, causing a lightning-like effect. Yamato can use this Haki in its advanced stage, being able to launch it a great distance forward and strike distant opponents with tremendous force with a single Kanabō strike, which was enough to defeat Hatcha. Yamato can also use it to injure Logia users, such as during his first encounter with Ace, managing to injure him. Yamato is also capable of using Observation Haki.
Both Yamato and Kaidou are capable of using all three forms of Haki, and while Kaidou certainly has more experience with them, we can't just ignore Yamato's abilities in this aspect, which is why we've decided to split the points.

Weapons
Kaidou wields Hassaikai, a giant metal Kanabō, covered in spikes and adapted to his size. In addition to its immense physical strength, he can use it to crush his opponents and send them flying great distances. He was able to knock Luffy unconscious with a single blow, breaking the enormous defensive power of his Busoshoku Haki enhanced with his Gear Fourth form. With this, he was also able to block Charlotte Linlin's attack with Napoleon, an extremely powerful sword. Kaidou executed Kozuki Oden with a double-barreled pistol; it is unknown what happened to this weapon today or if he still has it.

Like her father, Yamato possesses a Kanabō, which is appropriate for her size; in conjunction with her immense strength, she was able to use it to temporarily defeat Ulti. This Kanabō is named Takeru. With Yamato's strength, it can be used to perform flying strikes that can even resemble energy blasts. Yamato's skills with his Kanabō are truly astonishing, as demonstrated when he was able to move quickly while effortlessly countering all of Luffy's attacks.
We decided to share the points equally in this last category, mainly because Yamato was trained by Kaidou and had experience fighting him. Sure, Kaidou may be more skilled at this stage, but Yamato is heading there, and that effort deserves to be rewarded.

Kinemon vs. Kaido: Who Wins?
Now that we have our analysis written here, we can actually look back at the fight as it happened in the story. Now, the fight between Kaidou and Yamato in Wano Country was quite short so we won't focus exclusively on it, which is why we will also analyze the points afterwards, but first let's see what happened in the story.
Yamato quickly arrived on the roof of the Dome and shouted at Kaidou, who was standing outside the Dome. Kaidou told Yamato to call him "Father," but the latter refused and expressed a desire to break the chains holding them together and go to sea with Luffy after Kaidou's defeat. Kaidou stated that Luffy was dead and there was no way Yamato could beat him; Yamato acknowledged this, but still believed that Luffy would return and was thus prepared to hold Kaidou until then while the duo fought.
At the beginning of the fight, Yamato appears in Zoan hybrid form and claims that he only ate the Devil Fruit because she was hungry, to which Kaido points out that he had a hard time obtaining it. He then explains that his power represents the guardian of Wano and that he is disappointed that someone calling himself Oden ate it. He then notes that Yamato will have to rule Wano anyway, which he refuses to do.
Kaidou told his son that if he wanted to carry on the name Oden, he had to be ready for war. As Yamato remembered the samurai who had sacrificed themselves to keep him alive, Yamato asked Kaido why he had taken him away from him and Wano's freedom. Kaido replied that there was no simple answer to that, so the two performed the Raimei Hakke technique at the same time, creating a powerful Haoshoku Haki clash.
The clash broke Yamato's ice cover, preventing any injuries. He then leaped into the air and attacked Kaidou, slamming his head into the ground. As he stood up, he mocked his defense of Wano and reminded him that he would never escape his heritage and that the samurai would never accept him; however, Yamato denied these claims.
When Kaidou added that he had always been alone, Yamato shouted that he had friends, but Kaidou retorted that everyone who showed him compassion was dead, like Ace, the cave samurai, and any pirate who fed him. Discouraged, Yamato let his guard down, and Kaidou knocked him to the ground and began beating him, claiming that such friendships were false and that he should lead others with fear of his power.
Standing up, Yamato returned to normal and prepared to continue fighting Kaidou. She then infused her Kanabō with Haoshoku Haki and struck Kaidou again. At the same time, Luffy rode an adult Momonosuke in his dragon form to the rooftop and struck Kaidou as well.
The combined attack sent Kaidou flying, while Yamato and Luffy bowed to each other. Kaidou transformed into his dragon form and fought the other dragon, which Yamato was surprised to learn was Momonosuke. As the fight continued, Yamato watched Luffy and Kaidou clash, their attacks splitting the sky, and Yamato watched in amazement.
As you can see, the fight also revealed what the points revealed, although Kaidou used psychological tricks to overpower his son. Yet, in the end, if given enough time, Kaidou would have certainly emerged victorious because he is stronger and because his Devil Fruit is much stronger, but also because he has much more combat experience than his son.
