Background

First serialized in Square Enix's Gangan Joker in 2014, Kakegurui (or Kakegurui – Compulsive Gambler ) is a psychological mystery manga written by Kawamoto Homura and illustrated by Naomura Toru. It was an immediate success and won 3rd place in the DaVinchi x NicoNico Tsugi Manga Awards in 2016.

The series takes place at the private Hyakkaou Academy, an institute specifically designed for extremely wealthy students. The academy's curriculum is based on the idea that with money and power, it's not athletic or academic skills that are required, but the ability to read people and make deals. These skills are developed through gaming-based courses. Students who succeed in the game or donate large sums to the school are treated like royalty, while those who fail or donate the least are treated like pets and called "lapdogs."

Heroine Jabami Yumeko stirs up trouble in the school hierarchy after transferring into the second-year class at Hyakkaou Private Academy. Her naive exterior instantly makes her cruel and powerful classmate Saotome Mary want to take advantage of her, so the two play a charged game of rock-paper-scissors. As the class "leader," Mary is able to manipulate the game with the help of the class "dog," the timid Suzui Ryota. Jabami reads her tricks with ease, even pinning Suzui as Mary's assistant, and wins the game. After winning, she reveals herself to be a compulsive gambler addicted to challenges and games.

After his victory against Mary, Jabami continues to seek out increasingly challenging competitors, dangerous games, and higher stakes at school.

Kakegurui

The Kakegurui anime adaptation was announced in February, along with the teaser visual and staff reveal. This news was then followed by the first cast reveals in March, including Hayami Saori ( Anohana None Monogatari series, One-Punch Man ), Minami Tanaka ( Assassination Classroom None Black Marks None Wake Up, Girls! ) and Tokutake Tatsuya ( * Beautiful Bones: Sakurako's Mystery *, Orange ) as Jabami Yumeko, Saotome Mary and Suzui Ryota respectively. The supporting cast also includes Sawashiro Miyuki, Ise Mariya, Udono Mayu, Sugita Tomokazu, Serizawa Yu, Fukuhara Ayaka, Nanami Karin and Waki ​​Yuki.

Hayashi Yuichiro ( Garo: Divine Flame None PSE: Peace Eco Smile ) has been tapped to helm the anime adaptation as director alongside Kobayashi Yuichiro ( Shakugan in Shana None Claymore None Attack on Titan ) as writer and Akita Manabu ( Bleach None The Flowers of Evil None Fullmetal Alchemist ) as character designer. TECHNOBOYS PULCRAFT GREEN-FUND ( Works of Witchcraft ) worked on the music in addition to Tia working on the opening theme ("Deal with Devil") and D-Selections on the ending theme ("LAYon-theLINE"). The series was animated by MAPPA, well known for their work on Ushio and Tora None Yuri on Ice , and Rage of Bahamut: Soul Blank None

The series will premiere on July 1, 2017, and will consist of 12 episodes broadcast on Tokyo MX, MBS, BS11, RKB, and TVA.
