Kanjuro is a samurai from Wano Country and a former friend of Kin'emon and Momonosuke. He was a retainer of the Kozuki family. He was captured by the Donquixote Doflamingo Pirates before being freed during the Dressrosa Arc. He was also one of the Nine Red Scabbards, as initially believed. However, this was all a lie. It was later revealed that he was a spy working for Kurozumi Orochi, which angered his former allies. Did Kanjuro die in One Piece? What happened to him?

As the Fire Festival was about to begin, the Nine Red Scabbards, Kozuki Momonosuke, and Shinobu arrived at Udon Port to see the place destroyed, empty, and in extremely stormy weather. Kanjuro then began to wonder where all his allies were and what could have happened to them. Despite what happened, the Red Scabbards remained determined to continue the attack, knowing they would not get another chance.

As they continued on the ship, Kin'emon came to accept that there must be a traitor among them due to the ease with which the new plan had been discovered. Kanjuro then enthusiastically admitted his true identity. To his companions' disbelief, Kanjuro mocked his naiveté, also openly showing himself to the Beast Pirates' ships that had arrived.

Seeing this, Kin'emon quickly cut it, only to discover that the real Kanjuro was on the shore after holding Momomosuke and that the cut object was one of his paintings. At first, Kanjuro was happy about this, but he was surprised when the Straw Hat Pirates, the Heart Pirates, and the Kid Pirates showed up on the scene. Kanjuro was very surprised when Kyoshiro arrived and revealed himself to be Denjiro. He was also stunned when Denjiro explained that the rebels had gathered at Habu Port instead of Tokage Port.

He later became furious with Kin'emon when Denjiro assumed he had pointed to the wrong port to mislead the spy. Despite all this, Kanjuro focused on escape, flying with Momonosuke in a crane pull after momentarily fending off Kawamatsu. After declaring he would kill Kozuki Hiyori and laughing at the futile attempts of his enemies and his leader, Kanjuro headed to Onigashima with the patriarch of the Kozuki family.

At one point, Momonosuke attempted to escape, so Kanjuro brutally incapacitated him. He eventually reached Orochi and Kaidou and handed Momonosuke over to them. He also informed them that the plan to stop Kozuki's revolution had failed. Kanjuro created an army with his powers and confronted his former teammates at the back entrance of Onigashima.

After taunting them and explaining Momonosuke's failed escape attempt and the execution process, Kanjuro confronted Kikunojo. He was ultimately defeated and left bleeding on the ground, and Kin'emon solemnly dropped his hat on his head as a sign of respect. Despite his defeat, Kikunojo failed to kill him, so Kanjuro eventually regained consciousness despite his mortal wound. With his remaining strength, he created an ink copy of Kozuki Oden, arriving with it at the Red Scabbards under the guise of the real thing.

He initially led most of them to believe him, but Ashura Doji and Raizo claimed he must be an imposter, leading to the chaos that resulted in Ashura being stabbed. After being discovered, he claimed he would kill Momonosuke as he walked towards him, using the Oden clone's explosives which ended up engulfing Ashura as he was pushed out of the room.

Who killed Kanjuro?

Kanjuro arrived at the warehouse, where Momonosuke was with Shinobu, Kin'emon, and Kikunojo. Before entering, he wrapped himself in another Oden costume in an attempt to impersonate Oden again. Kikunojo became furious at this and launched an attack on Kanjuro, who kept up the Oden persona the entire time and finally made Kiku doubt herself when he mentioned how Oden had taken her and Izou when they were children.

This allowed Kanjuro to impale Kiku's chest with his sword, and his Oden disguise then dissipated as he laughed triumphantly at having been able to heal the mortal wound she had inflicted. As Kin'emon picked up Kiku and spoke to her, Kanjuro prepared his brush to strike him, but Kin'emon drew his sword and struck Kanjuro with a deep diagonal cut across the chest.

As he fell to the ground with fatal injuries, Kanjuro laughed and commented on how fitting it was that the man who had been his closest companion "on stage" was the one to knock him down.

Later, as he was dying, he spoke to Orochi, who noticed his condition, congratulated him on his performance, and told him that his ancestors were unhappy and needed him to paint something spectacular. He asked him to paint the Kurozumi's burning anger so that he could see his clan's revenge, annihilating everyone and sending Onigashima to hell. Kanjuro agreed and painted a monstrous entity (called Kazenbo), saying he would give his clan the final performance. Shortly after creating his painting, Kanjuro reached his limit and eventually died from his injuries.
