Created by manga artist Mine Yoshizaki in 2015, the franchise began as a (now defunct) mobile game produced by Nexon, with a manga serial in production two months later. With two volumes and 19 chapters, the series ran in Monthly Shonen Ace until March 2017 and has since been adapted into a two-season anime television series.

The series takes place in Japari Park, a large zoo containing numerous anthropomorphic versions of endangered, extinct, and legendary animals. The anime's main protagonist, Kaban, is a human woman who has no memories when she wakes up in the zoo. Kaban quickly encounters a Serval creature in the park, before embarking on an adventure with various other creatures in the park throughout its many different regions.

This character is a representation of the Serval animal, which is a type of wild cat commonly found in sub-Saharan countries. The character Serval is a very cheerful and energetic girl who always strives to make people smile. She is often referred to as a troublemaker because she is clumsy and causes many different events. In the anime series, she wants to learn more about herself and joins Kaban on his journey.

Serval comes with three different interchangeable face plates to display her wide, happy grin, sweet smile, and squealing expression. #829 Kaban

Kaban is a major character in the anime Kemono Friends. She has no memory of her past and appears to be the only human present in Japari Park. The name "Kaban" was given to her by Serval, who became her friend. Kaban knows nothing about the world and didn't even know she was human. She is easily scared and always says "don't eat me!" because she is afraid for her life. Although she is easily scared, she is a quick thinker and quite intelligent.

Kaban has three different face plates to show different expressions, with choices between her sweet smile, a cheerful smile, and a worried expression that shows a bit of fear. Her backpack can be placed on the ground or mounted on her back, in addition to its ability to be opened and hold a small Lucky Beast. Kaban also comes with a green map of Japari Park, as well as a small green paper airplane as seen in the first episode of the series. The paper airplane can be mounted on its own stand to make it look like Kaban is throwing the plane to fly through the sky. Kaban also has many alternative hand parts to hold the additional parts and give her character a more realistic feel.
