Kyogai - Kimetsu no Yaiba (Demon Slayer)

Known as the Drum Demon (鼓の鬼), he was a member of the Twelve Demon Moons holding the position of the Lower Moons until he was expelled for being too weak. He debuted in chapter 20 of the manga and episode 11 of the anime. The Drum Demon faces Tanjiro Kamado None Inosuke , and Zenitsu during the Drum House Arc in Kimetsu no Yaiba: Demon Slayer. Dubbed in Japanese by Junichi Suwabe and Steve Blum in English.

Kyogai was known for being a writer, focusing on his talent for writing. He was lectured by an unknown individual about the quality of his writing after becoming a demon, stating that he was bored and lacked the skills to teach people. Eventually, he lost the ability to eat humans, leading him to seek out humans possessing rare blood. Before he could eat the humans, he was stopped by the Tongue Demon and the Horned Demon living in the same mansion who dislodged the drum on his back.

Appearance

He has the appearance of a human with devil-like black hair, grayish skin, and razor-sharp teeth. His eyes are crimson blood red and rimmed in dark blue, and he has hidden his irises as he pulls his eyes to the back of his head, covering the kanji for the number six. He has the unique physical characteristic of having drums protruding from his neck, arms, thighs, forearm, and back.

Synopsis

Kyogai played the drum on his left shoulder while Tanjiro Kamado and his group visited an unconscious boy thrown out of the drum room. He walked past Tanjiro and Teruko's space, angered by the presence of all the invaders in his area, slamming the drum on his right shoulder as the former attempted to attack him, changing the direction of the room. Upon Inosuke Hashibira's entry, the drum demon immediately struck his right shoulder, then again; his opponent skillfully kept his composure and used the other two as footholds. Kyogai struck the drum on his stomach twice while Tanjiro and Inosuke argued, each cycle initiating a slashing assault like a claw attack. He then constantly slammed his shoulder drums, leaving his rivals floating in a disorganized heap. As he walked into Inosuke's path, he was taken to different rooms, along with everyone else.

Kyogai was busy collecting "rare blood," his right eye moving forward to show that he once belonged to the Twelve Demon Moons. In the midst of his wandering, he came upon Tanjiro, striking a drum to reverse space, hitting another to trigger his claw strike, and a slew of others to immobilize his foe. He groaned menacingly when Tanjiro got back up, considering the combination of different and old injuries.

Continuing to beat his drums to draw his Demon Slayer opponent away from him, Kyogai's childhood experiences forced him to snap, activate his Rapid Drum strategy, and unleash a vortex of effects. This attempt proved futile; aside from a scratch on his cheek, Tanjiro dodged a series of papers that fell from a rack on the wall, shocking the former Demon Moon. Despite his continued slashing attacks and further changes in the room's alignment, Kyogai's opponent continued to close in on him, then use a Water Breathing technique. The former Demon Moon was also shocked when, before being dismembered, Tanjiro praised his Blood Demon Art. He asked the young man if he truly believed his methods were effective, which was true, but was told that eating humans was inexcusable. Kyogai faded into oblivion and remembered how Tanjiro had seen the meaning of all his efforts, tears streaming down his face.

Personality

For a demon, Kyogai is quiet and serious, muttering about anything that upsets him. If someone breaks into his house, he eliminates anyone who gets in his way. When he gets too annoyed, Kyogai will raise his voice to mask his frustration and provoke his enemies.
Kyogai first became a demon and claimed that Kibitsuji's blood would make him much more powerful. His power, however, only grew to a certain extent, unable to gain strength by consuming more men. He was cast out by his master for this failure and expelled from the Twelve Demon Moons. In order to please his master and prove his worth, he became fascinated with consuming a special type of blood, called "Marechi."

In reality, Kyogai simply wants to be appreciated for his abilities. He is simply trying to enjoy his writing with men, and was saddened when he was told to give up. He tries to prove something like this to the Twelve Demon Moons, to save himself from embarrassment. Tanjiro realizes his ability, which helps Kyogai's spirit rest in peace.
