One Piece: Coby's Fate Explained!

Thanks to the anime and manga One Piece, Koby, the young boy Luffy saved from Alvida and later became a respectable Marine, has become popular again in recent months. Koby has been an occasional character for some time, and although we've known him since the very beginning, he has since become a very powerful member of the Marines. In this article, we'll focus on the recent events involving Koby and Blackbeard, who captured the young Marine. Why did he do this, and what happened to Koby in the story? Read on to find out!

  • Distribution of articles:
  • Koby is a supporting character in One Piece who appears at the very beginning when Luffy saves him from the fearsome pirate Alvida and motivates him to join the Marines, which he does.
  • After the failed capture of Boa Hancock, the Marines clashed with Blackbeard, who wanted to kidnap 800 Marines and a battleship; Koby offered himself in exchange and was captured.
  • After hearing what happened, Garp gathered a team and went to rescue Koby, which he eventually succeeded in doing, but perhaps at a great cost. Koby and his friends, however, managed to escape.

Why did Blackbeard capture Koby?

Although the Wano Country Saga focused on Luffy and his fight with Kaido, a lot happened in the background of the fights, and one major moment involved Koby.

After the end of the Levely, Koby exchanges information with X Drake, captain of the SWORD special unit and infiltrator in Kaido's ranks, who informs him of the latter's alliance with Big Mom. Koby finally tells him that he is going to Amazon Lily to capture Boa Hancock. During the clashes, during which the Navy uses two Seraphim, Blackbeard's crew also arrives, and Kobi believes it is inevitable that the pirates will try to ally themselves.

He offers Boa the chance to accompany him peacefully, but she refuses, and while he holds her, she reveals that if he kills her, all petrified people (petrified by his power) will remain in that state forever. He then wonders what to do when he hears Blackbeard reveal to the woman that he wants to take her Devil Fruit. Finding himself at a standstill, Blackbeard turns to him, explaining that his actions during the Rocky Harbor Incident allowed him to defeat Ochoku and reclaim Hachinosu, asking if he believes that by letting the woman go, she would return his subordinates to normal.

Koby replies that if he doesn't do the same with the Marines, it would be a big problem; Hancock promises, but in exchange demands that they leave the island. However, Blackbeard calls her a liar, being convinced that she would turn them to stone as well and revealing that he believes no one can resist her power; therefore, he decides to kill her by sacrificing his subordinates, even though Koby tries to stop him. The situation is resolved by the arrival of Silvers Rayleigh, who convinces everyone to cease hostilities, the pirate to free those he has petrified, and the invaders to leave.

However, later, Blackbeard captures 800 marines aboard a battleship, and Yamakaji is unable to do anything because he doesn't have official permission to confront an emperor, though Koby tries to tell him there must be another way. Teach then asks him if he plans to start a war against them, so he offers himself as a prisoner in exchange for the freedom of all his colleagues and the return of the ship, which leads the Emperor to laugh and ask him if he considers himself so important. However, he accepts and kidnaps him.

Is Koby still alive?

So, what happened to Koby later? Well, in Hachinosu Fortress, Teach reveals his intention to use him as a bargaining chip to convince the World Government to recognize his island as a separate nation, the "Blackbeard Kingdom." The young Marine immediately explains the impossibility of this plan succeeding, since he is a member of SWORD, but Teach knows what this organization is.

Kuzan therefore agrees with Koby and clarifies that this is a group composed of Marines who have formally resigned to freely take the initiative in certain circumstances, which is why they can attack an Emperor without the authorization of their superiors, but, on the other hand, the Navy can disavow them at any time. However, Blackbeard still wants to continue with his plan, certain that the World Government will not be able to lightly sacrifice the one the world acclaims as a hero since if he decides not to negotiate, his reputation will suffer. He thus orders his incarceration.

Did Koby survive his capture by Blackbeard? Well, he did. Namely, Garp gathered a small team and traveled to Hachinosu to rescue his protégé. Garp put up a major fight against Kuzan, showing just how powerful he was, but while it seemed like the situation would resolve itself relatively peacefully—Garp managed to rescue Koby and they were about to leave Hachinosu—Koby was tricked into the ensuing chaos and nearly killed, but Garp intervened and took a blade to the chest. And while he sent Koby and the others away, he stood there and was stabbed again by Kuzan's ice.

Koby survived and escaped, but Garp's fate is still unknown at the time of writing, and we have yet to see how Luffy will react to what happened to his grandfather. Overall, Koby is alive, but there are plenty of exciting twists and turns in the upcoming chapters of One Piece.
