Magic 1/2 - Sword Art Online
This is page 1/2 of Sword Art Online Magic.
Summary
Magic is a complex voice-activated system that first appeared in ALfheim Online and allows players to cast spells to achieve various objectives such as healing allies or hurling fireballs at hapless enemies.
Incantations
Every incantation in ALfheim Online consists of several Words of Power (力の言葉, Chikara in Kotoba ). In the game, these words share phonetic similarities with Old Norse and are displayed on the player's heads-up display (HUD) in script resembling J.R.R. Tolkien's Elvish writing system Tengwara. All Words of Power have meanings.
Power Words use sounds that Japanese simply doesn't have (like þ ( th shadow), ð ( th e), ö (w or rk), æ (b un ck), v, and more), but Japanese players are allowed to guess the pronunciations when casting their spells. Some examples are given below.
Each spell begins with an activation word which is used to determine the spell's range.
|Word | Japanese pronunciation | Japanese meaning | English meaning | Spelling scope|
None
|Ek | ekku | here | "I" | The caster only|
|þú | sū | 汝は | "you" | A target player |
|þik | shikku | 我を | "me" | Close range|
|þeír | sea | 彼らは | "they" | Far range |
|Oss | ōsu | 我らを | "we" | All party members|
Activation
The caster begins an incantation by raising or extending one hand before chanting the desired spell. This gesture activates the spherical HUD for Words of Power around the caster. The sphere has several lines with available Words of Power written on each, and each chanted Word highlights that one and suppresses the rest of the line. The most difficult spells are long phrases in the magical language, also featuring commas that cause the contents of the sphere to change dynamically, arranging the clauses into columns one by one. When the spell is finished, the visualized incantation follows a special effect in which it is arranged along a circle, written behind the caster in two parts that then move in front of them, join together in a spell-ready spell, and transform into the caster's faerie race symbol.
Attributes
Spells in ALO generally have an elemental attribute. Each race has an affinity for a certain element as follows:
|Sylph | Ondine | Salamander | Gnome | Imp | Spriggan | Pooka | Cait Sith|
None
|Wind | Water | Fire | Earth | Darkness | Illusion | Sound | Beast Taming|
Spells of other elements are also available to any race, but high-level magic may not be available and the effects will be weaker than if the same spell were cast by the race that has an affinity for it.
Types of offensive spells
Spell | Type |
---|---|
Direct fire | Projectile spells launched along a straight line |
Single Homing (単焦点追尾, lit. "Single focus tracking") | Single-projectile spells that home in on the target |
Multi Homing (多焦点追尾 lit. "multi-focus tracking") | Multi-projectile spells that target multiple targets |
Ballistic zone (広範囲曲弾道) | Spells that create a single ballistic projectile that damages beings in the area of effect upon impact |
Weapon load | Spells that can be stored in a weapon as charges and activated later quickly |
List of Known Spells (Part 1)
Note: Not all spells have Japanese names, and most of those that do are simply katakana spells that transcribe the words as they are spoken in English. Spells that do not have such a name have an unofficial title.
|English Name | Japanese Name | Attribute | Description|
None
|Aqua Liaison | Water | Restricts the movements of several opponents.|
|Aqua Stream | | Water | Creates a small diameter, penetrating, high-pressure water jet.|

|Concealment | |Wind | Creates a cloaked surface over the caster and nearby allies, hiding them from monsters and other players.|
