Master Roshi - Dragon Ball

Master Roshi, also known as the Turtle Hermit and the Martial Arts God, is a martial arts master who trained Gohan (Goku's adoptive father), Ox -King Goku , Krillin , and Yamcha. He has a sister named Fortuneteller Baba. He is a hermit and a pervert.

Appearances in Dragon Ball

In Dragon Ball , Master Roshi happily reunites with his friend Turtle after Goku and Bulma free him. Master Roshi rides to meet them on the Turtle's back. He gives Goku the Flying Nimbus as a thank you and is surprised to see that he can ride it so easily. He also gives Bulma the Three-Star Dragon Ball in exchange for a glimpse under her nightgown. Roshi returns to find his house under attack by Pilaf, who is looking for the Dragon Ball. He attacks, and Pilaf is knocked into the ocean. Shortly after, Goku appears at Roshi's house with Chi-Chi , the Ox King's daughter, to retrieve the Bansho Fan. They need it to put out a giant fire that has taken over the Ox King's mountain castle. After accidentally throwing the fan away, he goes into the mountain and agrees to put out the fire with a Kamehameha in exchange for being able to touch Bulma's breasts. He is shocked to see that Goku is able to copy the technique after seeing it performed only once, as it took him years to develop it.

Before training Goku, he asks the latter to bring him a beautiful girl. If he fails, Goku returns to Roshi's house. Krillin also wants to become Roshi's student and bribes him with erotic magazines. He offers the same conditions as Goku, so they bring Launch back. Accepting them as students, he moves his home to the training island and has Goku and Krillin carry heavy turtle shells on their backs while they perform special training such as milk delivery, construction, and other interesting tasks.

Roshi takes his students to Papaya Island for the 21st World Martial Arts Tournament to test their strength. Master Roshi himself enters the competition under the name "Jackie Chun" to prevent his students' egos from swelling if they win. He manages to defeat Krillin while Goku defeats Nam. During his fight with Goku, the young boy transforms into a Great Ape, forcing Roshi to blast the moon with a Kamehameha. They continue the fight and Roshi narrowly wins.

Roshi and Krillin continue their training on the island. A few days later, Goku and Bulma arrive and ask to borrow Master Roshi's submarine. He agrees on the condition that he can also borrow Bulma's Micro Band. He uses it to spy on Launch when she goes to take a shower. However, Launch sneezes, transforming her into Bad Launch, which forces Roshi to follow her orders. The Red Ribbon Army arrives on the island and begins making demands, to which Roshi responds by defeating them. Goku and Bulma return to the island and give him a diamond they found in exchange for his now-demolished submarine. Unfortunately, Bad Launch steals it and leaves the island. General Blue arrives and, with psychic abilities, binds everyone and leaves behind a bomb to kill everyone. Launch, however, returns as Good Launch and frees everyone, allowing Goku to dispose of the bomb.
Goku goes to fight the Red Ribbon Army while Bulma removes Roshi's micro-bracelet in an attempt to stop his evil behavior. Bulma builds a plane to discover Goku's location and realizes he will be fighting the Red Ribbon Army alone. Thinking this is almost suicidal, Roshi sets out to rescue them. However, to their surprise, by the time they arrive, Goku has already defeated everyone.

In an effort to find the final Dragon Ball, Roshi recommends consulting his sister, Fortune Teller Baba. She challenges Goku and his friends to a competition. After completing this task, Roshi is amazed and tells Goku to train alone from now on, as Roshi is unable to provide further training. He then accepts Yamcha as his student.

Three years later, Roshi once again competes in the 22nd World Martial Arts Tournament under his alias Jackie Chun. During the tournament, he faces Tien , whom he believes is a much better challenge for his students than himself. He withdraws from the tournament and lets the others continue instead. His former rival and Tien's teacher, Master Shen, enacts evil plans, which Roshi convinces Tien to reject. Successfully succeeding, Chiaotzu is manipulated into using psychokinesis to restrain Goku during Tien's match. Tien learns of this and tells Chiaotzu to stop, which causes an enraged Master Shen to attack. Roshi blasts Master Shen with a Kamehameha, allowing Goku and Tien to continue their battle.

After the tournament, Krillin is killed by Tambourine, whom Roshi recognizes as Piccolo, the evil king Roshi's henchman. Fearing the worst, he goes to fight Evil King Piccolo, planning to use the Evil Containment Wave to seal him away again. Along the way, he knocks Tien unconscious to prevent him from joining the fight and being injured or killed. Roshi misses his target with the Evil Containment Wave and, after using all his life energy in the attack, dies. He is later revived with the Dragon Balls and returns to live on his island with Turtle. Three years later, Roshi attends the 23rd World Tournament to watch Goku fight against "Demon Junior" (Piccolo).

Appearances in Dragon Ball Z

In Dragon Ball Z , five years later, while waiting to reunite with Goku and his family on his island, Raditz appears, defeats Krillin and Goku, and takes baby Gohan with him. Roshi recounts a story Grandpa Gohan told him about a fierce little tailed boy he found in the forest who hit his head and became good.

One year later, the Saiyans arrive and Roshi and the others watch the events unfold on Baba the Fortune Teller's crystal ball, while Bulma, Krillin, and Gohan travel to Namek. Bulma calls Roshi to tell him there is trouble on Namek, including Vegeta and an as-yet-unknown person. Frieza Roshi visits Goku to tell him about Bulma's call while another spaceship is built to allow another trip to Namek. During the battle with the androids, Roshi is at home with Oolong and Chiaotzu.

Seven years later, Roshi participates in the 25th World Tournament. While under Vegeta 's control, Babidi kills hundreds of spectators, angering Goku enough to fight him. Master Roshi helps find Dragon Balls to resurrect the people Vegeta has killed. Like many people on Earth, Roshi is killed when Kid Buu destroys the planet and is later resurrected.

Appearances in Dragon Ball Super

In Dragon Ball Super, Master Roshi helps fight Frieza's soldiers, but backs down when the fight with Frieza begins. After hearing Future Trunks' story about Goku Black , Master Roshi teaches Goku the Evil Containment Wave in order to defeat Zamasu. Roshi, however, forgot to give Goku the bottle that would contain Zamasu.

Gohan suggests recruiting Master Roshi for the team during the Tournament of Power. Roshi begins the tournament by staying with the Universe 7 fighters until he has analyzed the situation. From there, he goes to fight other fighters. When he grows tired, he is attacked by Frost, who cruelly prolongs the fight. Roshi attempts to use the Evil Containment Wave several times, to no avail. The second attempt backfires and traps Vegeta. Frost, believing he has won, underestimates Roshi's ability to use ki, while Roshi uses a micro ki blast to shatter the bottle containing Vegeta. After this fight, Roshi withdraws from the tournament.

Appearances in Dragon Ball GT

In Dragon Ball GT, Master Roshi, trying to flirt while on vacation in the city, recognizes a newly transformed Child Goku.
Roshi is possessed by Baby like almost everyone else in the world, but is later healed with the help of the sacred water. He is also transported to the new planet Baby wished to create when Earth explodes.

Powers and abilities

For a human, Master Roshi is incredibly powerful. Some of his abilities include superhuman strength and speed. However, he cannot fly. His main techniques include:

  • Kamehameha - His original technique. Ki is fired in a beam from both palms facing forward. The original technique includes a sweeping motion with the arms, but this is later forgotten or unnecessary later in the series.
  • Afterimage Technique - The ability to move so quickly that it appears as if multiple Roshi are attacking at once.
  • Thunder Shock Surprise - Master Roshi shoots electricity from his fingertips, paralyzing his opponents.
  • Ultra Instinct Ability - Being a master martial artist has allowed Roshi to have such insight into combat that he can use a fighting style without thinking, much like Goku did when fighting Jiren.
