Meili Portroute is introduced as a child from Irlam Village with the Endangered Children group in Arc 2. In reality, she is a member of an assassination organization that later attacks the Mathers Manor in Arc 4. She resembles a young villager with olive green eyes. She was originally depicted with brown hair in the light novel, but has since been updated to have blue hair to match her anime incarnation, which she keeps in a braid that rests on one of her shoulders. She tends to wear a simple blue dress with a light blue collar. She was soft-spoken and shy when she first met Subaru , but in truth, she is quite an energetic and friendly girl, which she demonstrated once she left the organization. She likes dolls and
History
Meili was raised from birth byDemonic Beasts , who also taught her survival skills. She was a wild child in the wild when one day she was approached by Elsa Granhiert, who "recruited" her by killing all the Demonic Beasts and bringing her back to the organization. Growing up in the wild, Meili lacked civilized sensibilities, including speech, and her youth and impressionability meant that she absorbed most of Elsa's mannerisms and tics. In fact, as Elsa taught her the basics of life, Meili also began to treat her as her purpose in life.
Sometime later, Meili appears in Irlam Village around the same time Subaru appears there. She is part of the group of children taken into the woods by the Wolgarms and is actually the one who serves as bait for Subaru to go further, but she does not reveal any of her abilities or intentions at this point. She is able to keep her identity completely secret at this point and remains discreet until later in Arc 4 where she is revealed to be Elsa's accomplice.
While Subaru is still busy with Sanctuary affairs, Elsa is hired by Roswaal. Elsa decides to kill the members of the Mathers Mansion and asks Meili for help. Across multiple timelines, the two manage to kill most (if not all) of the people in the mansion through a combination of Elsa's monstrous strength and Meili's strength in numbers. Even in the final timeline where Subaru manages to survive, the mansion is lost in the fight. Ultimately, Elsa fails in her contract, and Meili seeks refuge with Subaru and Emilia, fearing repercussions from the assassin organization.
She was held prisoner for a time and lived beneath the Mathers Mansion (in some luxury), but eventually joined the group when they traveled to the Pleiades Watchtower . During the journey, she proved useful in avoiding confrontations with the demonic beasts on their way, and eventually, after many trials and tribulations, she managed to find her way inside the tower itself. When the group completed the trial and revealed Taygeta's Library, Meili began searching for Elsa's Book of Memories in hopes of learning more about the concepts of grief and the value of one's life. Later, she participated in the fighting that erupted throughout the tower, but the outcome of which was yet to be decided.
Relationships
Elsa Granhiert - As Elsa is the one who brought Meili to civilization by rescuing her from the demonic beasts, Meili treats her with a certain adoration and mimics things like Elsa's speech patterns and behaviors. It was an obsessive relationship as Meili considered Elsa her reason for living. After Elsa's death, she vowed revenge on the killer.
Subaru Natsuki - Subaru saves Meili during the events of Arc 2, even though she probably didn't need saving. Later, while trying to get Meili's help, he managed to get her to talk to the group by giving her a panda-like doll that she named Big Bear Cat .
Shaula - Meili quickly becomes attached to Shaula during her short stay at the Pleiades Watchtower and calls her "naked onee-san."
SKILLS
Divine Protection from Magic Manipulation - This ability allows her to control hornless demonic beasts and makes her a Demonic Beast User . This ability has limitations, however, and she cannot control beasts like the White Whale. Additionally, she may also be incompatible with some of them, but can still exert some control over them.
Miasma Aura - Meili emits a miasma-like aura, which is why she was held captive under the Mathers mansion for a time. It is unknown if this is related to her divine protection.
