Melt (song by Hatsune Miku)

"Fondre" (メルト), was released on December 7, 2007 on Nico Nico Douga . The song is written by Ryō and was one of his first Hatsune Miku songs to be released publicly.

Summary

The song is about a shy girl who does everything she can to get the boy she's in love with to notice her. She changes her physical appearance in hopes that he'll notice her. Her love is so innocent that she often can't even bring herself to look him in the eyes and feels like melting just to be with him.
Later that day, it rains, even though the weather forecast hadn't predicted otherwise. The girl finds her folding umbrella too small, so the boy invites her to join him under his umbrella. In Japan, it is commonly believed that sharing an umbrella is associated with couples.

Melt currently has over 13 million views on Nico Nico Douga and is currently the third most viewed Vocaloid song on the platform, behind Senbonzakura and Miku Miku ni Shite Ageru . It has reached the Hall of Myths, a phrase used by fans to define songs that have surpassed 10 million views on Nico Nico Douga. Melt has since become one of the most well-known Hatsune Miku songs ever released, with a majority of fans having heard the song and memorized its lyrics. Fans feel they can relate to the overall theme present in the song, and Ryo's popularity has skyrocketed as a result.

Melt was originally released on CD at Comiket 73 (December 29-30, 2007), Japan's largest comic music and doujin convention. As it was the beginning of the Hatsune Miku boom, Ryo himself was present at the convention to sell his CD. This would be one of Ryo's only public appearances. Pictures of him were forbidden (as is the case for most vendors), and therefore very few fans ever saw what he looked like.

Since 2007, Melt has been one of the most featured songs on all Vocaloid albums to date, and remixes of the song have also proven popular with amateur musicians. While the song is pop-rock, the remixes have come in a variety of flavors, including dubstep, trance, and even ambient.

Additionally, Hatsune Miku performed the song as her final song when she performed at the 2013 Summer Sonic Festival in Tokyo. The performance was highly praised by fans and the general public in attendance. For those who weren't fans, they were somewhat perplexed that a "cartoon character" was allowed to sing alongside renowned musical talent, but many left the experience with a newfound appreciation for technology and respect for Miku's music, with a particular fondness for Melt himself.
