History of the Metal Gear Solid series

The story of Metal Gear Solid begins with Metal Gear Solid 3: The Snake Eater , which is chronologically the first game to occur in the series. It focuses on the main character, Snake, after he joins a CIA force called Force Operation X (FOX) during the Cold War. Throughout the game, Snake grows from apprentice to legendary soldier. At the end of the game, he is given the nickname "Big Boss" due to his heroic deeds in the game. In later games, Snake breaks away from FOX and creates his own mercenary unit. Later games introduce Solid Snake, who is a direct genetic clone of the original Snake, Big Boss. The most recent game chronologically in the series is Metal Gear Rising: Vengeance. The action takes place in the near future and focuses on Raiden, a cyborg ninja mercenary.
