Monkey D. Luffy vs. Monkey D. Dragon: Who Would Win in a Fight?
Monkey D. Luffy vs. Monkey D. Dragon: Who Would Win in a Fight?

One Piece is an anime that certainly has its share of strong and powerful characters. And while its protagonist, Monkey D. Luffy, is certainly one of them, some characters could be even more powerful than the manga's cheerful and quirky protagonist. In this article, we'll analyze one of those potential characters, pitting Luffy against Monkey D. Dragon, his own father, and one of the most intriguing and interesting characters in the entire series, who is also—in a way—one of the series' biggest enigmas.
And even though Monkey D. Dragon remains an enigma, Luffy would likely be able to defeat him. Monkey D. Dragon's powers aren't really known, and he's assumed to be extremely powerful. However, with Luffy having activated Gear 5 and his Hito Hito no Mi, Model: Nika powers, he could likely defeat his father and defeat him in a head-to-head confrontation.
Now that you have the short version of the answer, the rest of the article will be divided into three sections, the first two of which will introduce the characters, their powers, and their abilities (this is because we won't really know much about Dragon's Dragon powers). Finally, we will give our final verdict and explain why Luffy would be able to defeat his father, Monkey D. Dragon, in a fight.
Monkey D. Luffy and his powers
Monkey D. Luffy is the main protagonist of the anime and manga One Piece, created by Eiichirō Oda. His body is made of rubber after eating a Devil Fruit, specifically the "Gomu Gomu Fruit." He is the captain of the pirate crew known as the Straw Hat Pirates, founded by himself to fulfill his dream of finding One Piece. He is originally from East Blue.

Luffy has demonstrated incredible superhuman strength and fighting ability. At first glance, his thin appearance makes him appear weak, which is usually misleading to the enemy.
Throughout the series, Luffy has demonstrated strength far superior to that of humans, even defeating a sea king with a single punch. This is due to the intense training he underwent under his grandfather, Monkey D. Garp, which involved throwing him into dangerous jungles and attaching him to balloons to lift him to great heights, making him one of the most powerful characters in the series.
Luffy, despite not being very intelligent or strategic, has shown to have an opposite effect against Logia-type Devil Fruit users, for example his fight against Crocodile, and the idea of using water to hit him (since his Devil Fruit, the Suna Suna cannot control sand and manipulate it), Luffy could not hit him because Crocodile was made of sand and Luffy discovered that wetting his fists with water could hit him, even using his own blood to defeat him.
In Skipiea, Luffy was able to counter Enel's Mantra (Mantra is the Skipiean way of saying Haki); Luffy discovered that blanking his mind, i.e., acting like an idiot, could counter Enel's Mantra/Haki, so that Enel couldn't read his moves. When Luffy was a child, he unknowingly ate a Devil Fruit belonging to Shanks's crew. The fruit was the Gomu Gomu no mi, which gave him elasticity powers.
Luffy possesses the elastic properties of gum, but as a side effect, he cannot swim since water nullifies his energy, paralyzing his body. During battles, Luffy takes advantage of his elastic properties to stretch one or more of his limbs and snap them back by throwing them at his opponents. This, combined with his immense strength, makes Luffy a very powerful character.
Luffy can reach places no one else could simply by stretching certain parts of his body (his arms, legs, or neck). He can even inflate himself to block enemy attacks (like cannonballs). Luffy is completely immune to bullets, and these usually bounce off Luffy's body and return to the shooter or fly away elsewhere.
Due to his high rubber resistance, he is also completely immune to physical blows. However, throughout the series, this is contradicted several times, when a crew member (specifically Nami) hits Luffy for his irresponsibility, and Luffy ends up with a bruised and swollen face. Fans believe this is a "mistake" since it must be taken into account that Luffy is made of rubber and that blows should not affect him.
If anything can affect him, it's cuts from swords or knives, since Luffy's body is completely flexible, making him very vulnerable to cuts. After the Lobby Battle, Luffy developed a technique for eating while sleeping because after a big battle, he found himself knocked out for several days, and according to Sanji, "He hates missing meals." This technique allows him to eat as if he were awake.
However, this "technique" itself does not appear to be a technique in reality, as Luffy appeared to be in a sleepwalking state, so it may be more of an act of sleepwalking than a technique in itself.
Monkey D. Dragon and his powers
Monkey D. Dragon, known as the world's worst criminal, is the supreme commander of the revolutionary army and the most wanted and dangerous criminal in the world. He is the father of Monkey D. Luffy and the greatest threat to the World Government. Although a complex character, he has shown that he cares for his son as well as his own revolutionary ideals.

Monkey D. Dragon is the leader of the Revolutionary Army and has complete control over the organization. It has been hinted that Dragon may be an incredibly powerful person; the World Government has dubbed him "the world's most wanted man" and is terrified that he might rebel against them along with Whitebeard, who has become a powerful threat in his own right.
He is also the son of the legendary Marine Garp and the father of Luffy, a notorious pirate. Proof of his great power is that he trained Sabo, the second-in-command of the revolutionaries, who was already a great fighter as a child. With his training acquired years later, Sabo could be on the same level as Fujitora, Admiral of the Naval Headquarters.
When Sengoku told everyone about his relationship with Luffy, most people were stunned, including Gecko Moria, then a member of the Seven Warlords, and the members of the Whitebeard Pirates, very powerful people under the command of Whitebeard, the most powerful pirate. This reputation was enough to make Luffy a potential threat in the future.
He has powerful subordinates such as his commander Emporio Ivankov and Inazuma, who are relatively low-ranking, as well as his second-in-command Sabo, who is much stronger than the rest of the crew, mainly due to having consumed the Mera Mera no Mi, Portgas D. Ace's former Devil Fruit, which greatly increased his power and brought its user's power to a level similar to that of an emperor.
Ivankov comments on Luffy's will to live and be free and that this only proves the idea that he is, in fact, Dragon's son, implying that Dragon has a similar will. When Dragon arrived in Goa, people noticed that it was windier that day, such as when it didn't snow for a full day on Drum Island due to Portgas D. Ace's presence. It should also be noted that a storm appears or is already present every time (except at the Revolutionary Army headquarters) when Dragon is present.
Monkey D. Luffy vs. Monkey D. Dragon: Who Wins?
Now let's move on to the most important and interesting section of our article: the analysis. Here, we'll take what we've learned about these two characters and analyze how all these facts would help them (or not) in a fight against each other. Let's move on.
Comparing anyone to Monkey D. Dragon is no easy task, mainly because we don't know much about Monkey D. Dragon and his powers and abilities. Sure, some of them have been shown or implied, and we know he's a powerful and feared character worldwide, but we don't have any details for you. He's certainly more powerful than he lets on, but how powerful? We can't even begin to guess at this point. That's why our conclusion is based solely on our knowledge of Luffy's powers, and based on that, we believe Luffy would win.
Namely, the Straw Hats reached new heights after activating Gear 5 and his Hito Hito no Mi, Model: Nika, and we believe this would be enough to defeat Monkey D. Dragon. Luffy was able to play with Kaido in this form, and knowing Kaido's power, we believe this is a good reference point to conclude that Monkey D. Luffy would ultimately win this fight if it came down to it.
