Background

Adopted into Asuna's family by her father, who originally chose Nobuyuki to marry Asuna. He was a rival at school with Akihiko Kayaba and tried to win the affection of Kōjiro Rinko. When the Sword Art Online server security was broken after the game's completion, he hacked into the servers and redirected the minds of three hundred players to ALO . He then performed human experiments on the 300, researching control over emotions and memories in an effort to gain military money. ALO as Fairy King Oberon while having administrative privileges there.

Personality

Nobuyuki presents himself to his superiors as a smart, well-mannered businessman who will go far. The next moment, he will readily enter Nobuyuki mode whenever Kazuto or Asuna are alone with him. He is deeply amoral, greedy, and spoiled, blaming others for his problems. He is a control freak and does whatever he wants with anyone he deems weaker than him. He seems to derive more pleasure from controlling Asuna than from gaining her affection, although he does so freely whenever he can, preferring the smell of her hair.

He's a much worse fighter than Akihiko, despite what he thinks. Kirito easily parried Oberon's attack with the world's most powerful weapon, ALO , and Oberon panicked as he got his virtual cheek scratched.

Chronology

Fairy Dance Arc

On January 19, 2025, Nobuyuki met Kirigaya Kazuto in Asuna's hospital room and made it clear that he believed Asuna was his and that they would marry by default in a week, even though she was in a coma. Asuna was locked up and held hostage in a giant birdcage at the top of the World Tree, where he often visited and harassed her, trying to convince Asuna to be his by threatening her.

On January 22nd, Kirito, with the help of Yui and Asuna, ascended the World Tree and found Asuna. Oberon found them and immobilized Kirito using gravity magic, which was about to officially arrive in the game in a patch. He chained Asuna and pierced Kirito with his own sword as punishment, changing the pain tolerance level to 80% so that he felt actual pain. Oberon then proceeded to sexually assault Asuna in front of Kirito. Kayaba Akihiko's mental copy then spoke to Kirito and shared his GM credentials; ALO having been an SAO . In essence, it was a scam; they had higher privileges than Nobuyuki. Kirito used a voice command to reduce Nobuyuki's authority to zero. Oberon tried to summon Excaliber, Salvation's most powerful weapon, but failed. Kirito did so instead and lowered the pain tolerance level to 0, allowing all pain to occur in reality unadulterated. Kirito created another Excalibur for Oberon and told him to defend himself. However, Oberon was a poor swordsman, and Kirito couldn't help but inflict many cuts and pain on him, eventually slicing Oberon in half and then piercing his eye with the sword, resulting in Oberon's death. Asuna was freed.

In the real world, outside Asuna's hospital, Nobuyuki, his eye bloodshot and swollen, attacked Kazuto with a knife, certain he would avoid any consequences. Still fresh from rehabilitation, Kazuto was physically weaker, but he was definitely faster, and after a few injuries, he fought back and quickly held the knife to Nobuyuki's neck. Even though Kazuto didn't kill him, Nobuyuki was broken and subsequently arrested and interrogated. Nobuyuki tried to blame his human experiments on Kayaba Akihiko, but a scientist on the project confessed, and Nobuyuki had to admit it as well.

Non-canon

Moment of infinity, hollow fragment

Nobuyuki tried to hack into Aincrad to obtain his test subjects, but he and others on his team ended up in Aincrad instead. Nobuyuki created an overpowered character using his admin account that didn't resemble Nobuyuki. He tried to join the Clearers, but Kirito dueled him for a test and discovered that he couldn't fight very well despite his stats and equipment, and that he would be more of a hindrance than a help.

Later, Alberich's kidnapping activities were discovered, and Kirito rescued the missing players and found a console containing data on Strea, the captives, and their emotional states. He deleted the data.

Alberich appears as the game nears completion and paralyzes players using the console, intending to kill everyone except Asuna, whose memories and emotions he planned to alter for the wedding. He unleashed the Hollow Avatar creature, which was supposed to be the final boss. Several people broke free of the paralysis and confronted the Hollow Avatar. Alberich paralyzed everyone again and attacked Kirito with an unstoppable poisoned blade. Strea appeared and took the blow for Kirito, while removing Alberich's administrator privileges.

Alberich was then imprisoned, and after the Aincrad incident was over, the survivors reported him to the police, whose investigation confirmed the accusations. Nobuyuki was arrested.
