When it comes to One Piece ships, one of the most commonly discussed characters in this category is Nami, who also happens to be one of the most popular characters in the series. In this article, we won't be focusing on Nami's love life in general but rather on her relationship with one character in particular—Vinsmoke Sanji—because we'll explain why they're just friends.

Nami and Sanji are very close friends, having been part of Luffy's crew for a long time. But even though they are close and care for each other, Nami sees Sanji as just a friend. On the other hand, Sanji makes fun of Nami, but Sanji makes fun of all the pretty girls, so that's not a valid argument. That said, Nami simply sees Sanji as a friend, and that's it.

Nami and Nico Robin are the most intelligent members of Luffy's crew. Nami is very dominant and bossy; she usually commands the crew members (even Luffy) even though she isn't the captain, but no one on the crew objects because everyone trusts her abilities. If she finds herself in danger, her first concern is her safety, and she often forces the other crew members to fight for her. Nami can be mean at times, so much so that she would even leave her allies to save her own life.

However, despite her flaws, Nami is one of the most compassionate and emotional members of Luffy's crew, as she is easily moved and sympathizes with those who have had difficult or sad pasts. She is even willing to forgive Hacchan, even though she caused him a lot of pain and suffering in the past as Arlong's officer. She is very understanding. For example, when discussing whether or not to accept Usopp back into the crew, she was willing to overlook his actions to bring her friend back, not understanding Zoro and Sanji's prideful speeches.

Nami is obsessed with fashion. In fact, she always wears different clothes, and when she goes shopping, she likes to try on many clothes in high-fashion stores, only to leave saying she prefers something simpler. Nami doesn't seem ashamed of wearing provocative or revealing clothing, or even being photographed in costume or spied on while taking a bath, as in Alabasta, as long as she is adequately compensated.

After two years apart from the crew, Nami seems to have become less violent, as she no longer blames her crewmates for the reckless actions her crewmates occasionally commit. When Luffy and Zoro endanger Sunny's understudy, she tries to scold them and teach them a lesson for their reckless behavior.

Sanji makes fun of (almost) all the girls in One Piece

One of Sanji's most distinctive characteristics is his ability to remain calm and kind. Like Franky, Sanji is not ashamed to express his emotions. He often abruptly leaves the team to intervene when a situation calls for it. He tends to speak relatively calmly, even under duress, and he almost never acts without first carefully weighing his options. The fact that Sanji deceived Crocodile, that he was actually Mr. Three, or that he had planned for CP9 to take Nico Robin to the station and arrive there before they both spoke to Sanji's intelligence. When things go as he predicted and according to plan, Sanji tends to exclaim "Bingo!"

His worst flaw, however, is that he is an uncontrollable womanizer. He claims that Nami was the main reason he decided to join Luffy's crew and flirts with every beautiful woman he meets. Due to his two years on the transformed island after the time skip, Sanji has become even more twisted and acts strangely around members of the opposite sex.

Sanji has always shown great courage and has paid special attention to all the beautiful women he has met. While he is not attracted to ugly or older women, he still protects them from harm, as he did with Kureha.

Zeff taught him good manners and etiquette while he was still a child, and he was also taught never to hit a woman. When his friends are in danger, he can only threaten one of them, such as when he points a gun at Miss All Sunday immediately after leaving Whiskey Peak. However, he never manages to shoot her, such as with Califa and Robin when the latter was Bibi's opponent. Furthermore, he was quite envious when he discovered that Bartholomew Bear had sent Luffy to Amazon Lily, the island of women. He despises those who throw away their food or don't eat it because they don't know what hunger feels like.

Sanji and Nami are just friends

Nami frequently takes advantage of Sanji's devotion to her by ordering him to run errands, though she is annoyed by his womanizing in serious moments. For example, when Sanji leaves a note for Nami before boarding the Puffing Tom in Water 7, she is annoyed that most of it is a meaningless love letter with the important information only in the postscript.

When Kalifa eliminated Sanji in the Enies Hall, Nami was shocked by his moral ideal of not hitting women and decided to pay her back for what she had done to him. When he was temporarily in her body during the Punk Hazard arc, she was disgusted by his perverted behavior and tried to control him from taking his perversions too far. Sanji also has the honor of being the only Straw Hat member Nami addresses with a suffix, i.e., "Sanji-kun" (incidentally, Nami is the only girl to whose name Sanji adds "-san"). Nami was hurt by Sanji's departure in the Zou arc and went to Whole Cake Island with Luffy to save him.

As you can see, there's a certain closeness between the two, but they care about each other because they're friends. Their personalities are just too different and wouldn't really work well as a couple.
