One Piece: Zoro's Four and Five Sword Styles Explained
One Piece: Zoro's Four and Five Sword Styles Explained

Roronoa Zoro is undoubtedly one of the most famous One Piece characters. Like Luffy, Zoro wants to be the best in his class, that is, he wants to become the best swordsman in the world, surpassing his idol and rival, Dracule Mihawk, considered the best swordsman in the world. Zoro currently uses three swords, but has used several others throughout his career. In this article, we have decided to talk to you not only about Zoro's words, but also about his sword styles, that is, the four and five sword styles that Oda mentioned in SBS 91.
The Four Swords Style is a known sword technique that was developed and used only by Kaku and Kaku. Kaku developed it through the simultaneous use of four swords and he used this style during his fight against Zoro. The Five Swords Style is actually a style that uses five swords simultaneously, but since Oda hasn't introduced any characters who know this style, we can't really say anything about it at this time.
The rest of this article will focus on Zoro's character and his swordsmanship styles in One Piece. We'll discuss these styles, how they're used, and how they influence Zoro's fighting style in general. This article may contain fewer spoilers, so be careful while reading.
What is the Four Swords Style in One Piece?
CP9 member Kaku initially used the Four Swords Style while participating in the Enies Lobby incident. However, Luffy first mentioned this approach in a futile attempt to belittle Zoro. The Four Swords Style uses four razor-sharp swords, as the technique's name suggests. Kaku achieves this by fusing his two katanas with his Rokushiki Rankyaku technique, which involves creating gusts of wind with his legs and cutting them off, making it appear as if he is equipped with four blades altogether.

Kaku has several variations of this move, making Rankyaku and the Four Sword Style a very powerful and adaptable move. He uses both swords to stick to the ceiling and uses his Rankyaku to launch cutting winds in Rankyaku: Ran, which is the most notable example. Using his increased stature and power gained from becoming a human-giraffe hybrid with the Ushi Ushi no Mi: Giraffe motif, Kaku has improved the adaptability of his Four Sword Style. His long neck also acts as a whip, like a long blade.
What is the Five Swords Style in One Piece?
At this point, we know what the Five Swords Style looks like and how it's used. Namely, we know that sword styles go up to nine, so it's safe to assume that the Five Swords Style exists. However, it hasn't been mentioned yet, and it hasn't been shown in either the manga or the anime. The only known mention of the style was in SBS 91, in which Oda responded to a fan's request to see an older version of Zoro.
In this section, Oda drew a 40-year-old Zoro who also knew the Four Swords Style, as explained in the description, and a 60-year-old Zoro, who, according to Oda, used the Five Swords Style. But unlike the Four Swords Style, which had already been introduced in the series at the time, but was not used by Zoro at the time, the Five Swords Style remains a great mystery and even now, we have absolutely no idea what it looks like and how it is used, other than the obvious fact that it involves using five swords simultaneously.
What are Zoro's other swordsmanship styles?
Now that we've answered the main question of our article, we can expand on it by revealing some basic information about Zoro's swordsmanship styles and skills. Namely, Roronoa Zoro doesn't currently use either the Four Swords Style or the mysterious Five Swords Style, so we thought this article would be pretty empty without some additional information that would finally reveal how Zoro fights and what his styles are. So far, Zoro has shown that he can use five different styles, and we're going to introduce them to you.
Zoro initially only mastered the Three Swords Style, which was his traditional fighting method, but as he progressed, he also gained proficiency in other schools, including the Two Swords Style, the One Sword Style, and even the Swordless Style. Zoro and the rest of the crew are now better equipped to take on the New World. As a result, Zoro can relatively easily cut through things even harder than steel without using moves similar to Shishi Sonson since learning to use Busoshoku Haki. Zoro is known to be able to slice through a Pacifista of the caliber seen in the Sabaody Archipelago without much effort.
Three-sword style

Zoro's primary sword technique is the Three Swords Style. Zoro can wield three swords simultaneously—one in both hands (each) and one in his mouth—which seems completely impossible for an ordinary human. The majority of Zoro's Three Swords Style techniques slash targets multiple times or cut multiple targets simultaneously. Zoro can produce whirlwind-type attacks that have been shown to damage multiple enemies at once by performing flying attacks in the Three Swords Style.
He can parry blows and even block strikes from multiple opponents at once using his three swords. Zoro has shown that he has little difficulty fighting opponents who have more swords than him, particularly the six wielded by Hatchan and the eight wielded by Hyouzou, whom Zoro considers beneath his time.
Two-sword style

Zoro first learned the two-sword style as a child before transitioning to the three-sword style. Similar to the latter, Zoro is a master of this school of swordplay. He uses only two of his three swords expertly in combat, including draw-and-resheath maneuvers and flying slashes.
Before receiving Shusui, which replaced the destroyed Yubashiri in Thriller Bark, Zoro was able to use both Wado Ichimonji and Sandai Kitetsu with great skill. Ryuma was a very powerful zombie samurai who used Brook's Kage Kage no Mi style for most of his fights before switching to using a sword style to defeat the remaining enemies.
He can fight Monet, a Donquixote pirate officer and Logia-type Devil Fruit user, and Gyukimaru, a very powerful warrior monk, without exerting his full strength using the two-sword style. Namely, even though Zoro only had two swords in his possession at the time, he was able to fight the Orochi Oniwabanshu, the toughest ninja in Wano Country, on equal footing.
A sword style

Zoro began perfecting the One Sword Style and eventually became a master of it. Zoro is a master of the One Sword Style and, like the other styles, has frequently used it to execute battle-ending moves against a variety of opponents. Similar to the Two Sword Style, this style primarily uses flying slashes and various draw and sheath techniques to destroy or seriously injure formidable foes in one fell swoop.
This method has been shown to be capable of repelling the Nyaban brothers of the Black Cat Pirates, eliminating several lower-level members of Arlong's crew, and even eliminating Mr. 1, the most powerful agent of Baroque Works, with just a sword. He can defeat Ryuma, a formidable samurai and zombie, and even Hody Jones, a powerful fish-man, using this specific sword style, and even decapitate a dragon's skull.
Nine Swords Style

The most severe use of Zoro's spirit projection skills is the Nine Sword Style. When he is enraged enough, a dark aura forms around him and two apparitions of his full body emerge, granting him the power of nine swords. Zoro's attack power is tripled, allowing him to neutralize Kaku's Amane Dachi, his greatest Rankyaku, and slice him multiple times in a single move despite its seemingly solely spirit nature. This form has been canonically used three times in total—against Kaku in Enies Lobby, a pacifist on Sabaody, and Kaidou during the attack on Onigashima.
Foxfire Style

When Zoro saw Kin'emon, the leader of the Nine Red Scabbards, use the Fire Fox method against Smiley in Punk Hazard, he was intrigued by the distinctive sword technique. Later, Oda revealed that Zoro had merely "borrowed" this fighting style from him during the encounter against Big Mom and Kaido on Onigashima. As a result, it can even cut fire, as evidenced when it injured Prometheus by splitting him in half. Zoro mastered the technique despite using it for the first time, being able to cut Kaido's Bolo Breath and then incorporate it into his standard sword techniques. Kin'emon's most powerful move, Omori Karyudon, was also destroyed by Zoro, along with Lunaria itself.
