Luffy seems to be the one destined to repeat Roger's legacy and become the next Pirate King in the world of Eiichiro Oda's story. To achieve this, Luffy will have to rely on the help of his friends, his allies, as well as his own powers. Recently, it was revealed that Luffy's Gomu Gomu no Mi is actually the mythical Hito Hito no Mi, model: Nika, who gave Luffy the powers of the Sun God Nika. In this article, we will explain whether this means that Luffy is actually a god himself or not.

Monkey D. Luffy is not an actual god in One Piece, but he is in possession of the Hito Hito no Mi, Model: Nika, which was previously known as the Gomu Gomu no Mi. This Devil Fruit gave Luffy the powers of the Sun God Nika, technically making him a "god," though he is still just an ordinary pirate with exceptional powers and not a true deity, as the theory might suggest.

Who is Nika in One Piece?

Both legendary and mythical, Nika was a warrior woman once worshipped by some slaves as the Sun God. It was first mentioned by Who's-Who, who was imprisoned at the time and had heard of this tradition from one of his prison guards. Nika appears to be a dancing figure with flame-like hair and a loincloth based on his appearance. He holds both a sword and a spear in his hands, depending on what has been shown. Who's-Who's version of folklore depicts Nika as a brave and kind character who befriended slaves.

It was believed that Nika, who could make slaves smile, would one day arrive and free them from their cruel overlords. According to mythology, Nika was a formidable fighter. He is seen in his silhouette wielding a spear and a sword, as mentioned above. He is described as a "white" warrior and "liberator" whose pranks make everyone laugh and who will not leave as long as people need him. Slaves have worshipped Nika for a very long time because they believed he would one day free them. However, Nika's existence may or may not have actually existed.

A prison guard informed Who's-Who, who was once part of CP9 and had been imprisoned, of the mythology. Who's-Who then began praying to Nika in an effort to find relief from his own suffering. Who's-Who assumed the legend wasn't meant to spread and that the World Government or another party had done something to the prison guard when he discovered that the same guard who informed him had abruptly disappeared. He then made the decision to escape his imprisonment to avoid a potentially harsher sentence for knowing too much about Nika. During their altercation, Who's-Who brought Nika to Jinbe because he believed the Fish-Man race were slaves and wanted to learn more about the legend. Jinbe didn't respond to Who's-Who but became enraged when he compared Fish-Man to slavery and beat him with his Fish-Man Karate.

Does this mean Luffy is a god?

Now that we know who Nika is and what his role is in One Piece mythology, we can move on to our explanation of Luffy's nature. Now, Nika is considered the Sun God in One Piece's story, but he is, as we've seen so far, not a true deity in the traditional sense. He is worshipped as such, but he is far from a traditional Sun God in this regard. Alongside him, there are said to be three other gods: the Rain God, the Earth God, and the Forest God. Their identities have yet to be revealed.

As things stand, it seems that the powers of these gods are somehow contained in special Devil Fruits, and their owners can access them by unlocking them. Whether this is true or not is still unknown, but if it is, we have no idea if the true owners of these Devil Fruits, if they even belong to anyone, know their true nature. Fans are speculating that the Rain God could be Monkey D. Dragon or Vivi, that Blackbeard could be the Earth God, and that Admiral Aramaki could be the Forest God, but as we said, this is all pure speculation.

What we do know is that Luffy inherited the powers of Nika, the Sun God. By combining his Devil Fruit powers with Gear 5, Luffy became extremely powerful and was able to defeat Kaido with his new "godly" powers. But does that mean he's a god now? Well, no. Luffy never really changed. He's still the same old human kid who ate Shanks' stolen Devil Fruit out of spite and now wants to become the Pirate King. Nothing has changed with Luffy, and the fact that he actually possesses the powers of the Sun God doesn't influence his nature in any way. This confirms that he's not actually a god.

But he could be considered a "god," though this is a symbolic interpretation. Namely, as someone who uses the powers of the Sun God Nika, Luffy is actually an incarnation of that god and is therefore the current iteration, i.e., he is a "god." This could also apply to the other three gods, but this is a purely symbolic interpretation that has nothing to do with Luffy's nature. Regardless, these Gods remain a great enigma in Oda's lore, and we'll have to wait until he clarifies things before we know anything for sure.
