About One Piece
One Piece follows the adventures of the Straw Hat Pirates as they make their way across the Grand Line in search of the legendary treasure left by Gol D. Roger called One Piece. The story centers on Monkey D. Luffy, the captain and leader of the Straw Hat Pirates. Luffy is a young man of average height and rather thin with a scar on his cheek and a signature straw hat. As a child, he accidentally ate the "Gum-Gum Fruit," which turned his body into rubber. Inspired by the famous and feared Pirate Lord Shanks, Luffy decided to embark on his own quest for the legendary treasure, One Piece. Along the way, he meets a pirate hunter named Roronoa Zoro who, despite being a pirate hunter, decides to join Luffy's crew after Luffy saves him from execution. Also joining Luffy in his quest to become the Pirate King are Nami, the thieving navigator; Usopp, the lying marksman; and Sanji, a chef with a passion for women. The crew receives their first real pirate ship, the "Going Merry," and sets off on an adventure in the East Blue. Later, the crew is joined by the humanoid reindeer doctor Tony Tony Chopper, an archaeologist and assassin; Nico Robin, a super robot shipwright; Franky, the de facto soul king, skeleton swordsman Brook; and, most recently, former Seven Warlord member and fishman Jinbe. They battle numerous powerful pirates, marines, and monsters along the way and get closer and closer to finding Gol D. Roger's treasure.
Notice
It goes without saying that, as an award-winning and record-breaking manga series, One Piece has received the highest praise for its characters, art, plots, humor, and its seemingly endless length. As the highest-grossing manga of all time, with an estimated total revenue of $21 billion, the franchise is becoming more than just a manga series. One Piece is becoming something of a cultural icon. Just as The Beatles did to the world of rock and roll, One Piece is doing the same for Japanese manga and anime. Every year, events are held where thousands of people gather to buy merchandise, cosplay, and discuss theories about the progression of the manga's story.
