  • Monkey D. Luffy and Eustass Kid are bitter rivals, and although they worked together in Wano Country, they never became true friends.
  • When Kid discovers that Luffy has been named the new emperor after the fall of Kaido and Big Mom, he returns to the Flower Capital in anger and wants to kill him, but participates in the local fireworks display.

Luffy and Kid had a very complex relationship

Kid shares Luffy's dream: to regain One Piece and become the new Pirate King. For this reason, combined with the carefree attitude and fighting spirit he sees in the Straw Hat Pirates, he seems to greatly respect him. However, even though they often face the same problems, Kid always shows that he wants to solve them his own way, seemingly slaughtering anyone who dares to mock his ambition, making him Luffy's complete opposite.

After the War for Supremacy, he claims that he isn't lenient enough to let him roam the seas as he pleases. Regardless, Luffy had piqued Kid's interest and curiosity for some time thanks to his exploits against the World Government, which took place before their actual meeting.

After the time skip, Kid seems amused to see Luffy as Caesar Clown's prisoner in Punk Hazard, and later, the two establish a sort of competition while they are prisoners in Udon. He also later collaborated with Luffy during the battle against Orochi and the Beasts Pirates on the day of the Fire Festival.

The kid wanted to kill Luffy because he was angry at becoming emperor.

So, as you can see, there's a lot of tension between Kid and Luffy, which makes sense, considering the two characters actually have the same goal and are therefore rivals. This is why their relationship is so strained and why, despite working together at times, they never became friends.

On top of that, Kid has a very belligerent personality, so it's not possible for him to just become Luffy's friend like that. This is the position he finds himself in when we see him at the end of the Wano Country Saga.

We know Kid wanted to kill Luffy… but why? Well, after Kaido and Big Mom fell, Kid and Law left while the Straw Hats stayed in Wano. At the same time, with two spots now empty, the World Government was quick to appoint two new emperors: Buggy the Clown (for some stupid reason) and Monkey D. Luffy, whose “promotion” actually made a lot of sense. The World Government quickly printed this news, and as he walked away, Kid saw it.

One Piece Figure
Come see

When he saw that Luffy had been named Emperor, angry and jealous (because he had helped defeat Big Mom), he returned to the Flower Capital, wanting to confront Luffy again and, potentially, even kill him. He simply couldn't bear that Luffy had been named Emperor before him, so it makes sense why he reacted like that. But he never got the chance to fight Luffy.

He was initially dragged into the Fire Festival against his will and participated in the local fireworks, meaning he never actually saw Luffy at that point. Later, he met him again, but he didn't fight him, and they parted ways again, as rivals, because Kid still had the same dream as Luffy. And that's the story of how Kid almost tried to kill Luffy in Wano.
