One Piece: Who Is Ochoku & Is He Still Alive?

One Piece has a surprisingly large number of supporting characters who have appeared over the series' two decades of existence. Many have been forgotten because they appeared early in the story, while some have remained supporting characters closely tied to the lore's past. The character that will be the subject of this article is a relatively obscure supporting character from the past, but one who was mentioned in the most recent episode of the One Piece anime. The character in question is Ochoku, a former member of the fearsome Rock Pirates, and in this article, you'll discover everything there is to know about him and his fate in One Piece.

  • Distribution of articles:
  • Ochoku is a pirate who was a member of the Rocks Pirates, as well as one of the people involved in the Rocky Port Incident. He was also the former ruler of Hachinosu until he was defeated by Blackbeard.
  • Although little is known about Ochoku, it can be assumed that he was a powerful and formidable pirate, especially since the Rock Pirates were feared in the world of One Piece.
  • It is unknown what happened to him after the Rocky Port Incident, that is, after his defeat by Blackbeard, who took control of Hachinosu from him, so his status is officially unknown.

Ochoku was a member of the Rocks Pirates

Fans of One Piece lore will know that the Rock Pirates were one of the most dangerous and formidable crews in the history of the lore. The role of the Rock Pirates is very complex, and while the series has yet to reveal more details about them, we do know that they did indeed pose a real threat and that it took the combined efforts of the Marines and the Roger Pirates to bring them down.

The members of the Rock Pirates are well-known, but we don't have too many details about most of them. Sure, we know the stories of Whitebeard, Big Mom, and Kaidou (and even Shiki), but what about the others? We know some of these members, but this article will focus on Ochoku.

Ochoku was a minor member of the Rock Pirates, but given his crew status, he was undoubtedly a powerful pirate. You may also know him as Wang Zhi, which is the official English translation of his name and is also used in other languages, so if you're confused, you now know that Ochoku and Wang Zhi are the same person. Unfortunately, it's unknown what Ochoku looks like, as he hasn't been identified in the series, or Oda ever specified who he was, even though he drew him in the manga. Now, let's see what we know about his story.

Is Sukuna in Megumi more powerful than Gojo?

As for his past and career, we can confirm that we know absolutely nothing about it, as Oda has not (yet) explored this part of his biography. The first moment of his life that was revealed was his arrival in Hachinosu (also known as Pirate Island), where he became a member of the Rocks Pirates; we also do not know how old he was at that time.

Thirty-six years before the start of the main story, the Rocks Pirates learned that the Uo Uo no Mi, Model: Seiryu, and the Nikyu Nikyu no Mi would be up for grabs at the Native American Hunting Contest to be held at God Valley. Upon arriving on the island, Rocks D. Xebec set out first and ordered his companions to follow him. The crew then attacked some World Nobles, forcing Vice Admiral Monkey D. Garp to ally with Gol D. Roger to defeat them. Rocks lost his life in the battle, so the crew disbanded. Ochoku then took control of Hachinosu, which was the location where his adventure with Rocks began.

And with that, we conclude his story regarding his career with the Rock Pirates. From the time he took control of Hachinosu until Blackbeard visited him, nothing is known about Ochoku and his history. We don't know what happened to him, what he did, or why Blackbeard targeted him, so we'll move on to what happened during the time skip.

Ochoku's fate is unknown at the time of writing.

Remember the Rocky Port Incident? We wrote about this One Piece event a while back and told you what happened. In short, the Rocky Port Incident was an incident caused by Trafalgar D. Water Law during the two-year time skip. It was first mentioned by Brannew when he reintroduced the Seven Warlords of the Sea as a group. We know that Navy Captain Koby protected the citizens during the incident and became a hero among them, and that Blackbeard clashed with Ochoku as part of the incident.

Now, details are still scarce, as we only have a brief account and Blackbeard's version of the story, but Teach then clashed with Ochoku, and the battle was apparently gruesome and dangerous. Koby helped save some people, but he also helped Teach—it's unclear exactly how Koby helped Teach or whether he did it willingly or intentionally—in a way that allowed the formidable villain to defeat Ochoku and take control of Hachinosu.

So, what happened to Ochoku later? He was overthrown, but his ultimate fate wasn't specified by Oda. Knowing Blackbeard, he likely bragged about killing Ochoku, so it's possible he left the former ruler alive and imprisoned for some reason, but it could also be that Oda simply forgot to explicitly confirm that Ochoku died in that fight. Either way, we'll have to wait for an official answer.
