One Piece: Here's How Long Luffy Has Been at Sea!

Monkey D. Luffy, the protagonist of Eiichiro Oda's One Piece manga, is known for his many epic adventures. He is one of the most famous anime characters in history, and his adventures are known and followed worldwide. We know that Luffy embarked on his adventures on July 22, 1997, when the first chapter of the manga was released. It has been almost 26 years since that moment, and Luffy is still very active and present in our lives. But how long has this been part of the story itself? We know that manga series rarely (almost never) follow the real-world calendar, which means that time passes differently in the universe. In this article, we will try to tell you how much time Luffy spent at sea in the One Piece series.
The timeline of One Piece is almost impossible to trace precisely because the chronology of some events is impossible to determine. On the other hand, the chronology of some events is known and easy to determine. Based on the known information, Luffy has been at sea for at least two years and 134 days, or about two years and four months, but that was before the conclusion of the Wano Country arc, so we assume it's about two years and five months now.
The rest of this article will focus on the timeline of the One Piece series and Luffy's adventures at sea. We'll explain why it's so difficult to determine the timeline of this manga (although this is a problem present in many shonen works, not just One Piece) and what we might scrape based on the information we have. This article will contain many spoilers, so be careful if you're not fully up to date on the latest events in the series.
The timeline of the One Piece series is almost impossible to trace
A general problem with shonen manga is that they don't follow an actual timeline. Now, this wouldn't be a problem if the authors were more precise in determining their in-universe timelines, but since that's not the case, fans usually have trouble pinpointing certain moments and determining when certain events took place (Naruto is infamously known as an example of this). One Piece is a work that doesn't really stray far from this formula, and even if we know the general idea of the timeline, a precise determination is basically impossible.
In the universe, we know that there are two timelines: the Sea Circle Age (海円暦, Kaienreki) and the Sky Age (天暦, Tenreki) timelines. If you follow the link we provided, you will get more information about each of them and the general timeline of One Piece according to these two timelines. It is important to know that these two timelines only give a rough overview of the events, thanks to which we know that Luffy has been at sea for about two and a half years, but this was evident just by knowing that we had a two-year time skip in the series. Now, what we will do in the next section is try to determine a more precise timeline of the events of the series.
A rough estimate was nevertheless possible.
Now, going through nearly 26 years of material is no easy task, but luckily for us, our friend on Reddit, user adnaphsaka, was kind enough to go through the manga up to the point where the raid on Onigashima began, and this is the conclusion and timeline he was able to construct from the information in the manga:

As you can see, this is a very accurate timeline confirming that Luffy has been at sea for approximately two years and 134 days, or approximately two years and four months, based on the data collected.
This isn't a fully updated timeline, as it ends when the Onigashima raid begins, and since the Wano Country arc is over, we assume the timeline would need another update. But the Wano Country arc wasn't that long in-universe, so we assume the accurate number would be around two years and five months now, and that's about as far as we can tell about the length of Luffy's travels.
