Yes, Sogeking is Usopp! Here's Why Luffy Still Doesn't Know It!

Of all the Straw Hat Pirates in One Piece, Usopp is known as the comic relief and by far its most cowardly member. While Usopp's cowardice may not reflect his true powers, we certainly haven't seen much of the latter because of the former. That's why we've ventured on a journey to discover Usopp's strength in our previous articles, but this article, while still focusing on Usopp, will give you a completely different side of his story. In this article, you'll discover who Usopp's Sogeking character was and why Chopper and Luffy are the only ones who still don't know that Sogeking and Usopp are one and the same.

Monkey D. Luffy is, along with Chopper, the only member of the crew who never realized that Sogeking was Usopp from the beginning, even though it was obvious from the start and everyone immediately saw through Usopp's mask. This is simply because they are both very inobservant and don't even notice such obvious things. Later, everyone simply stopped talking about it, so it was never brought up.

The rest of this article will focus on Usopp's character in One Piece. We'll talk about his character, Sogeking, and how he came to be, as well as why Luffy and Tony Chopper remain the only two characters who haven't seen through Usopp's obvious disguise. This article may contain fewer spoilers, so be careful when reading.

Who is Sogeking in One Piece?

When Luffy announces that they will be parting ways with the Going Merry because it has become irreparable, Usopp does not accept this decision and decides to leave the crew, challenging Luffy to a single combat with the Going Merry as a reward. The beginning of the fight between Luffy and Usopp is very interesting, as Usopp dominates Luffy. His former friend nevertheless defeats him in one blow because he was already very weak before the fight.

After his defeat, Usopp finds himself alone on the Going Merry and is kidnapped by the Fanky family, who want to use him as bait to lure Luffy away. Usopp then explains to Franky that he is no longer part of the crew because of the conflict surrounding the Going Merry. Franky is touched by this and is overcome with affection for Usopp.

Later, Usopp refuses to help the crew save Robin, but he returns moments later wearing the Sogeking mask, claiming to be a friend of Usopp and wanting to save Robin. Only Chopper and Luffy fail to recognize Usopp when he wears his Sogeking mask. Once they arrive at the large gate of Enies Lobby, Sogeking participates in the fight against the two giants.

Once they are defeated, Sogeking notices their tears and tells them that they had no reason to fight for the World Government because their leaders, whom they believed to be imprisoned, are actually on Little Garden Island. The two giants then decide to rally to the crew's cause. Once across the tribunal island, Sogeking climbs onto the roof of the courthouse with the rest of the crew.

Shortly after, on Luffy's orders, he sets fire to the World Government flag atop the Tower of Justice. Once inside the Tower of Justice, Sogeking sets off alone to find one of the keys to free Robin from his sea granite handcuffs. He confronts Jabura, who defeats him shortly afterward. Sogeking would not have survived without the intervention of Zoro, who falls from the upper floor with his opponent, Kaku.

During this duet, Sogeking is handcuffed to Zoro by an unfortunate accident. They then ask Chopper to find the key, allowing them to free themselves. Once freed, Sogeking must once again fight Jabura, who was about to kill him, had Sanji not intervened. Later, Sogeking is on the roof of the Tower of Justice and shoots all the Marines to cover Robin and Franky on the Bridge of Eclipse.

He then sends all the keys recovered from the CP9 agents. Once on the Bridge of Hesitation, the entire crew must face the Buster Call as well as the elite Marine unit while Luffy finishes his fight against Lucci. Once defeated, Luffy can no longer move. It is Usopp who will speak to him in order to motivate him to move, unfortunately in vain. Usopp will be one of the first to hear the voice of Going Merry come to save them.

Usopp is present as Sogeking at the funeral of the Going Merry. Back at Water 7, Sogeking leaves alone, as he is no longer part of the crew. Meanwhile, he searches for lines to say to his former crewmates to get them to rejoin the crew. However, he is surprised by Sanji, who warns the others of his intentions. Everyone is delighted that Usopp can return, except for Zoro's remark that he will not be allowed to return to his crewmates until he apologizes.

Once the Straw Hats' new ship, Thousand Sunny, is about to set sail, the crew is left waiting for Usopp. However, they are forced to weigh anchor as Vice Admiral Garp attempts to stop them. Seeing the ship leave, Usopp becomes worried and rushes to apologize in tears. Luffy then offers him his hand so he can return to their ranks.

How come Luffy and Chopper never found out that Sogeking was Usopp?

If it were up to Usopp, the crew wouldn't really get far with the disguises. Sogeking's appearance and timing were so obvious that everyone who saw him knew from the start that it was Usopp, though Sogeking vehemently denied it. Nico Robin knew that Sanji knew, Zoro knew, Nami knew... it was pretty obvious! The mask was horrible, and his overall appearance couldn't even fool a blind man. But it fooled Luffy and Chopper. Sogeking was Usopp's friend, and when he first saw him, Chopper asked him if he knew where Usopp was. On the other hand, Luffy simply accepted this fact and didn't bother to give it a second thought.

As the story continued, Sogeking proved to be an ally, and Luffy and Chopper simply didn't care about his presence when the time came, Usopp simply removed the disguise and reappeared as Usopp. At this point, Luffy and Chopper still had absolutely no idea that Sogeking and Usopp were one and the same; this wasn't because they were stupid, but rather because they weren't observant.

They don't notice things very well, and it's more because they don't really care or accept things as they are than anything else. Later, when Usopp returned to the crew, no one talked about Sogeking anymore, so time passed. Sogeking slowly faded into oblivion, and believe it or not, Luffy and Chopper remain the only two members of the Straw Hats who still don't know Sogeking's true identity.
