Petelgeuse Romanee-Conti was an Archbishop of Sin of the Witch Cult, representing Sloth, and was the main antagonist of Arc 3. He was killed by Subaru Natsuki and Julius Juukulius during Arc 3.
Petelgeuse, as he first appeared, had short, dark green, neatly combed hair and piercing black eyes. He wore a purple priest's robe with a dark green lining.
Petelgeuse had a gentler appearance a hundred years ago. He had a slimmer figure, longer hair, and less crazed eyes. He wore the same clothes in the past as he did in Arc 3.

Personality

Petelgeuse has an unusual personality, usually twisting his body while talking, often tilting his head from side to side. He enjoys hurting his body, usually by biting his fingers until they bleed. He states that his reason for living is to prove his love forSatella , which he demonstrates by following all orders given to the Witch Cult. He is a well-known member of the Witch Cult, as he is always the first to act when the Witch Cult receives orders.
100 years before the start of the series, Petelgeuse had a radically different personality. He was gentle and rational. His personality changed after Pandora and Regulus attacked the village he lived in. Emilia and Fortuna lived there.

History

Petelgeuse, who was known as just Geuse at the time, was a close friend of Emilia and her aunt, Fortuna, about 100 years before the story begins. He released the Witch of Sloth genes, which he received from the wise hero Flugel, to protect Emilia and Fortuna from Pandora, the Witch of Vain Glory. However, Pandora used her Witch of Sloth genes, which she received from the wise hero Flugel, to protect Emilia and Fortuna from Pandora, the Witch of Vain Glory. Authority to force Petelgeuse to kill Fortuna, which drove him insane.
Little is known of his whereabouts or actions until he appears in Mathers territory during the events of Arc 3. After Emilia is announced as the royal candidate, Petelgeuse and his followers set up camp in the forests around the Mathers mansion and Irlam Village. They attack the village and mansion, prompting Subaru and Rem to stumble upon their plan. Subaru is killed in the process, but his Return by Death ability activates and begins Subaru's long efforts to stop Petelgeuse's plan from coming to fruition.
Through various timelines and numerous deaths, Subaru learns that Petelgeuse has multiple camps, a number of lieutenants called the Ten Fingers who serve as Petelgeuse's alternate bodies, the abilities and powers of the Sloth Authority, and the ability to see the Invisible Hands. With all this information, Subaru and his team smuggle the villagers and Emilia out of the town by providing false information to the Witch Cult and systematically defeat all the Ten Fingers before confronting Petelgeuse himself. Through the combined efforts of Julius and Subaru, he is ultimately defeated. After failing to possess Subaru due to Satella's interference, he gathers the remaining energy he has and uses the Authority of Sloth to move his dead and broken body in a final attempt to kill Subaru, but is ultimately killed for good in the process due to quick thinking using oil, a spirit on loan from Julius, and a timely distraction using his own Gospel of Truth that Subaru retrieved.

Relationships

Emilia and Fortuna - Petelgeuse was friends with Fortuna and Emilia during Emilia's childhood, and he often visited them in their village. He cared for Fortuna and Emilia, so much so that he was willing to sacrifice himself to protect them from Pandora and Regulus. He no longer recognizes Emilia after becoming Sloth's Archbishop of Sin.
Sirius - Sirius is the Archbishop of Wrath and considers herself Petelgeuse's wife - she calls herself Sirius Romanee-Conti. She is actually his stalker and is obsessed with him.
Satella - Satella is the witch of envy, and Petelgeuse is obsessed with her to the point of being one of her most ardent followers. He craves attention and acts quickly in her best interests.
Subaru Natsuki - Petelgeuse often mistook Subaru for the Archbishop of the Sin of Pride during their encounters. He initially tried to convert Subaru into a new member of the Witch Cult and was actually tricked in many timelines when Subaru pretended to be interested. After failing to possess Subaru after his body's defeat and being rejected by Satella, he goes mad in his agony and attempts to kill Subaru despite his body being completely shattered.

SKILLS

Authority of Sloth - Petelgeuse was a user of the Authority of Sloth, which allowed him to emit a corrupting black wave that caused visual and auditory hallucinations as well as intense pain that could drive a person insane. He was also able to materialize invisible hands (except for Subaru) that allowed him to interact with the physical world using an ability called Invisible Hand.
User Magic - Petelgeuse is proficient in Earth magic like Your Dona None
Possession - Petelgeuse is able to possess the bodies of others and has used this ability to extend his lifespan to over 402 years. While certain factors affect an individual's compatibility with his possession (such as affinity for spirits), he has kept special followers called the Ten Fingers who act as his sub-commanders but have also absorbed an amount of witch factor into their bodies that allows him to possess them.

Petelgeuse also carried a Gospel of Truth which he used to "see" the future and determine his actions or Satella's desire.
