Petra Leyte - Re:Zero

Petra Leyte is a young girl with shoulder-length reddish-brown hair and cyan eyes. While in the village, she wore casual clothes—apparently a shirt and jeans—then once she moved to the mansion, she wore the maid uniform commonly worn by all the maids at the Mathers Mansion. Regardless of her outfit, she continues to wear her signature headband with a ribbon on it. Due to her young age when she first appeared, she actually changed a lot throughout the story, growing taller and growing her hair out. She is quite soft-spoken, though she has gained confidence and voice over time.

History

Petra was born and raised in the village of Irlam in the lands controlled by Roswaal L. Mathers . Although she herself is relatively gentle, she was part of the group's rowdy group of children and was even quite popular among them. She is initially introduced when Subaru first visits the village to buy supplies with Rem. Subaru then learns some trivia about all the children and Petra reportedly dreams of becoming a seamstress in the capital.
During the incident with the Demonic Beast Wolgarms, after Subaru discovers that the source of the killing curse was the puppy the children were petting, realizes they are in danger and rushes back to the village. By then, Petra and the rest of the children have already disappeared. Subaru and Rem rush into the forest to try to rescue them, fearing that any delay will mean the children's deaths. The duo manage to locate the children in a clearing, seemingly injured despite no obvious injuries other than bite marks (the vector through which the curse was applied). As she is being treated, Petra points out that another child has been taken further away (the still unknown name Meili ), prompting Subaru to set out alone to rescue her. With Rem watching over the children, Petra and the others are taken home by the villagers and are more or less fully recovered by the next morning.
After the incident, Petra (and the rest of the village) gradually gets to know Subaru better, as he often comes to conduct radio drills with them. Thus, when Subaru suddenly arrives with orders to evacuate due to a threat from the Witch Cult, most of the villagers readily comply. He also specifically addresses the children and asks them to accompany Emilia during the evacuation. This served the dual purpose of giving Emilia the responsibility of looking after the children and forcing her to leave the village while also showing that the children were not afraid of her because of her appearance (being similar to Satella (the Witch of Envy). Petra and her companions actually admit to recognizing her as the one who accompanied Subaru into the village during radio drills despite her hood hiding identities.
After this, Petra gains favor with Subaru and Emilia and begins working as a housekeeper at the Mathers mansion. It is likely around this time that her crush on Subaru fully manifests. She remains in the mansion for most of the time Subaru and Emilia are traveling to Sanctuary, but is forced to evacuate when Subaru returns to witness Elsa and Meili attacking the mansion. Once everything was resolved, she continued her work for the mansion while Subaru and his team went to Priestelle and then subsequently the Pleiades Watchtower .

Relationships

Subaru Natsuki - Petra developed a crush on Subaru after being saved by him multiple times. She was one of the reasons Subaru couldn't bear to stay in the mansion after overcoming his death curse. She died in multiple timelines when Elsa attacked the mansion as an effective bystander to the events. In one of these unrealized timelines, she gave Subaru a handkerchief, which was in turn part of a payment that Echidna took and ultimately gave Subaru more insight into the entire event.
Emilia - Petra and the rest of the children were tasked with evacuating with Emilia during the events of Arc 3. Her and the children's casual acceptance of her appearance did much to boost Emilia's self-esteem and confidence as a royal candidate. The children later admitted that they felt comfortable around her because they recognized her when she came to the village with Subaru for radio drills.
Irlam Village - Petra is very close to the members of Irlam Village, especially the other children Mild, Meina, Cain and Dine (who both sought to woo her), and Lucas.
