During the tournament, Dyne dies to Pale Rider, then Kirito joins Sinon and they call a temporary truce, trusting him a little too much. They watch as Death Gun appears, paralyzes Pale Rider with his silenced sniper rifle, and shoots him with his pistol while crossing himself. The paralysis is gone, Pale Rider jumps to retaliate but suddenly convulses and logs out. Death Gun says, "It's showtime," and disappears. Kirito says that Pale Rider is also dead in real life. Sinon joins Kirito to find Death Gun, who has jumped into the river, unequipping everything, making him invisible to the satellite scanner. Meanwhile, the ALfheim Online friends watch the tournament broadcast, and Petit recognizes PoH's slogan and says that Death Gun is a Laughing Coffin Elite. Asuna logs off to talk to Seijirō about Kazuto's speech in OGGO.

Kirito parries a barrage of automatic rifles. They anticipate Death Gun heading north toward the city and head there. With only two new players to watch out for, they first track down Jūshi X. As Kazuto leaves, Death Gun stops using his cloak and paralyzes Sinon. He is about to shoot her, but Kirito saves her, and they escape in a close chase.

Kirito and Sinon hide in a cave that will protect them from the scanner for the time being. Kirito knows that Sterben is Death Gun, and there are one or more others acting out in the real world after peeking over the shoulders of the tournament participants under the camouflage cloak when they filled out the real address form, then breaking in and using something small like an injection to kill people, making it look like Death Gun's act to scare everyone. He tells Sinon that someone is at her bed right now, ready to kill her, so she can't log out just yet. Sinon panics and cries, but manages to overcome the fear and put herself in the right mindset to survive while Kirito formulates a plan. Meanwhile, Asuna learns why the police can't know Death Gun's real name and goes to Kirito's hospital.

Sinon eliminates Yamikaze, and Kirito uses his sense of killing intent based on the slowdown in the game server's resource management and manages to dodge Death Gun's rifle bullet, then rushes to Death Gun's hiding place, parrying subsequent bullets with his lightsaber as he goes. He remembers an LC member using the thrust but cannot recall the name. Sinon fires, destroying Death Gun's sniper rifle. Since Kirito is guarded by the military, Death Gun cannot use the pistol and blast the legend, so he uses a weapon part as a thrust, initially overpowering Kirito. He calls Kirito out on the killings and how he cannot even remember his name. Kirito's health parameters reach dangerous levels in real life, which worries Asuna. Sterben continues to hit Kirito, bringing him to his last hit points when he finally remembers the name, "Red-Eyed XaXa." He says it aloud and Sterben is sent reeling. Sinon manages to aim at Sterben, and the prediction line makes him stagger even more, so he tries to escape, but Kirito fires his cape, canceling the effect, while finally managing to slice Sterben to pieces with his sword. Sterben mutters that his partner wouldn't let things end like this, and Kirito says they will all be found. Sinon and Kirito finish the tournament with a gift grenade, going out in a flash and thus sharing first place.

Shino logs out and finds herself alone in her room. Kyōji then arrives with a box of cakes. They talk about the tournament, and Kyōji reminds her that he's waiting for her. Things get weirder, and Kyōji assaults Shino, pulls out a succinylcholine injector, and confirms Kirito's thoughts. He wants them to die together. Shino is scared, but she suddenly has a vision of Sinon speaking to her and reminding her to do her best despite all her fears. She fights back, even trapping him with her prize gun, telling her she can no longer be afraid. Kirito also breaks in, and they knock Kyōji unconscious, but not before he stabs Kirito in the chest with his injector. However, there was a remaining medical equipment electrode stuck to his body, and he is miraculously saved.

Shino turns the tables on her tyrannical former friends. Shinkawa Kyōji and his brother "XaXa" Shōichi are apprehended, while Kanamoto "Johnny Black" Atsushi is free. Kazuto dismays Shino by talking about his past killing of the junkie criminal, but he says she has the right to justify her actions. At this, a postal worker from the time arrives, and she and her daughter Mizue thank Shino for saving their lives. Shino cries as Mizue holds her hands, believing she can be strong and move on after all.
