Why can Sanji use fire in One Piece?
Why Can Sanji Use Fire in One Piece? Diable Jambé Explained!

Vinsmoke Sanji is best known as the cook of the Straw Hat Pirates in Oda's One Piece manga. He is the fifth member of the crew and the fourth to join, at the end of the Baratie Arc. Today, Sanji is an indispensable part of Luffy's crew and, over the decades, has displayed incredible powers and abilities. His kicks are known throughout the pirate world of Oda's One Piece and he has developed many powerful techniques with his kicks. One of them is the Diable Jambe and in this article, we will explain this technique to you.
Diable Jambe is Sanji's most powerful fighting style. In this style, Sanji heats his leg through friction and adds heat to his kicks, creating a small flame with which he can attack his opponents. In this form, Sanji has the ability to burn, and even set his opponents ablaze. Sanji is able to use Diable Jambe on one or both of his legs at the same time.
In the rest of this article, we'll talk about Sanji and his technique. You'll learn about the Diable Jambe and how Sanji is able to use it in combat. The article will explain how and why Sanji is able to use the Diable Jambe and how he can use fire in the series, but it will also contain some spoilers, so we had to warn you beforehand.
What is the Diable Jambé?
Sanji learned a martial art known as Black Leg Style, which the pirate Zeff apparently taught him, and all of his special kicking techniques, including the Diable Jambe, stem from this style, which is why we wanted to introduce him to you. All of his maneuvers come from his legs and feet, except for the time he used knives to fight Wanze. This unusual martial art is apparently inspired by Brazilian martial arts, Capoeira, Korean martial arts, and Taekwondo, and may also be inspired by the Chinese art of Tan Tui.
Inspiration may also point to a French fighting style now known as Savate. Originally developed by French sailors, Savate consists of similar techniques that use the hands to support the body and add power to the kicks. It is particularly useful on a rocking ship.

Perhaps for this reason, most of Sanji's main opponents throughout the series were all martial artists with their own unique styles (such as Kuroobi from "Fish-man Karate," Bentham from "Okama Kenpo," Wanze from "Ramen Kenpo," and Jabra from Tekkai Kenpo). As for his actual attacks, Sanji has a wide repertoire of specific kicks and techniques that he uses to fight. It is notable that he does not call out the name of an attack every time he fights someone, except during important events and fights.
Most of his attacks are spoken in French and are usually culinary terms related in some way to the specific part of the opponent's body he is attacking or the nature of the attack itself.
The most common attacks are the Mutton Shoot (Sanji jumps, turns around, and kicks with all his might in the midsection or head of the enemy) and the Anti-Manner Kick Course (one of Sanji's most powerful kicks with which he attacks vertically or horizontally in a straight line towards a usually giant enemy, a typical finishing move).
In addition to Black Leg Style, during the Enies Lobby incident, Sanji demonstrated a new technique called Diable Jambe (French for "Devil's Leg," although it can also be interpreted as Devil's Wind), which involves spinning his right or left leg at high speeds, to the point where it turns red from the friction and becomes inflamed. In this mode, anything he hits with his leg will instantly receive, in addition to the force of the kick, an intense burn.
Sanji used this ability in his fight against Jabra, in which his attacks were less effective due to Tekkai (a defensive technique that involves making the body as hard as steel). With the heat from this new ability, Sanji overcame his inability to break Tekkai by burning Jabra in addition to the powerful kick. According to Oda, Sanji can use this technique thanks to his fiery passion, which is even hotter than his own attacks. After the time skip, Sanji is able to heat his legs without spinning and can set them on fire even in the depths of the ocean. Similarly, he can set his entire body on fire to further strengthen his attacks.
What are Sanji's known Diable Jambe techniques?
Before the time skip, Sanji would spin rapidly to activate the Diable Jambe, which caused friction that heated his leg. This method has been shown to have negative effects, and Sanji risks significant physical damage if he uses it too frequently or for an extended period of time. Here is a list of the methods Sanji uses:
First Hash
Sanji jumps into the air and uses the Devil Leg to increase the force with which he hits the opponent's stomach. He applies it to Jabra first.
Blazing Shot

In mid-air, Sanji uses the Devil's Leg to strike the opponent's head, increasing the force with which they are thrown and spinning them until they land on the ground. He first destroys Jabra with it.
Extra Hash
Sanji leaps into the air and begins a series of lightning-fast kicks that resemble a ball of fire. This technique was first used during his fight against Gecko Moria, while attempting to retrieve Robin's shadow.
Assorted Fries

Sanji jumps into the air and delivers three kicks at once, one to the right, one to the left, and one to the center, but the Diable Jambe causes a large explosion of fire when it strikes. He first uses it to block a Gomu Gomu no Bazooka punch from Oars.
Devil Sheep Shot
Sanji uses the Diable Jambe to kick his opponent directly and horizontally. He first used it in the Sabaody Archipelago against the PX-4.
***
Sanji has demonstrated considerably greater mastery of the Diable Jambe after two years of training in the Kamabakka Kingdom, using it frequently without suffering any negative consequences. He also appears to use "shoot" instead of "strike" in the names of his attacks. Sanji no longer needs to turn around to perform the Diable Jambe; he can now spin on his legs on command. He can even forcefully lift his leg underwater. The trauma Sanji endured during those two years, the memory of which causes him to erupt in anger, is somehow connected to this newfound power.
Even his father's advanced technology can clash with Sanji's new Diable Jambe. It was later revealed that despite Monkey D. Luffy's rubber body, it had enough strength to briefly knock him out. The improved design of the Diable Jambe differs from its original design in that when activated, a flash of light can be seen on the tip of its foot. Sanji can now activate the Diable Jambe on both legs simultaneously, as evidenced during his battle with Doflamingo. Sanji can now use his Diable Jambe to unleash all-new, more powerful attacks. They are:
Well Cooked: Grill Shot

Sanji uses the regular Diable Jambe with this new technique, but the area affected by the kick is burned. This burn has the appearance of a grill (related to meat when grilled on a grill), and it was first used against one of the Kraken's tentacles, demonstrating its power by burning it even when submerged in water. Sanji appears to simply use the flaming leg from Diable Jambe: Extra Mince in this move, seemingly enhancing it. He first used it against a few of the New Fishman Pirates. In the anime, the kicks appear to burst the fishman's bubbles to release fireballs and produce rainbow rings.
Frying Pan: Spectrum

After two years of training in the Kamabakka Kingdom, another Sanji developed yet another new technique. Sanji frequently knocks opponents to the ground with his flame leg after using Sky Walk. The reason the technique is called Spectrum seems to be due to the way Sanji moves his flame leg, which is quite similar to the way Ivankov moves his head when using Ganmen Spectrum. The first time it was used was against several new Fish-Man pirates. When the Bubble Fish-Men break in the anime, the kicks appear to shoot fireballs and produce rainbow rings.
Collar strike

Sanji rushes towards the enemy's neck after burning his leg in flames. Caesar Clown's servants, the Satyrs, were the first targets.
Flank Strike
Sanji activates his Diable Jambe before kicking his opponent in the chest, knocking them to the ground. He uses this tactic when fighting Vergo.
Play Shoot
Sanji approaches his opponent by raising his Diable Jambe-bearing leg above the ground. He then leaps forward and kicks his foe in the face. Its initial use was against Monkey D. Luffy, and its power was enough to knock him back a good distance.
Crushed

Sanji ascends to a considerable height using Sky Walk before using Diable Jambe to land with his leg extended. He then swings an axe at the top of his opponent's head. When first used on Luffy, it briefly knocked him unconscious.
Cross strike
Sanji strikes with a powerful, fiery frontal kick. It was used to save Vinsmoke Reiju from Big Mom's assault while working in tandem with Luffy's Gomu Gomu no Elephant Gun. The word "hog's butt" is the origin of the French word "crosse," meaning "paddle."
Party Table Kicker Course
A modified version of Diable Jambe's standard Party Table Kick Course move. While standing on his hands and spinning in circles, Sanji warms up both legs. This is an excellent move for large groups of enemies, just like his regular form. It was originally used by several Beast Pirates to clear the way for Luffy as he headed towards Kaido during the Onigashima raid.
Rotisserie strike

Sanji delivers a fiery kick, sending the opponent spinning and launching themselves into the environment. This was originally used against Queen to spin her long neck and deflect Perospero's candy arrows while he was in his Brachiosaurus form. The blow was powerful enough to shatter Queen's needle-like artificial teeth.
