Usopp is a One Piece character we could write an entire encyclopedia about. He's certainly interesting, and his inventions deserve a lot of recognition, but he's also known for being the most skilled liar in the series. And even though we, as fans, immediately recognize when Usopp is selling us a fake story, many characters believe his inventions, earning him the title of the best liar in the series. Usopp is a liar because it was a way for him to get through life. He has no powers and his skills were initially limited, but he has a way with words and often uses them to his advantage. In most cases, however, his lies are obvious and completely absurd, but even in such situations, they are a good distraction, especially for more gullible or naive opponents. This has helped him and the crew on several occasions. On top of that, he is an excellent salesman and has been known to sell people crap, making them think they have purchased a high-end product.

This article will be divided into two main sections. The first will explain the origins of Usopp's lie, which can actually be considered one of his special powers. The second will be a list of all his most famous major and minor lies, as it is impossible to completely list every stupid thing he has said in the series. Usopp is a great liar, a talent that comes from lying to the people of Syrup Village by shouting that pirates are coming, in the hidden hope that his father will return from his pirate adventures.

Ironically, some of the lies he told Kaya later turned out to be true. He thus proves to be a skilled tactician when manipulating his enemies during battles. For example, he tricks Smack into thinking he's going to put a rubber band on his face so he'll close his eyes so Usopp can escape.

Another aspect of this is his ability to sell people garbage, as he is a brilliant snake oil salesman. As mentioned, Usopp is a skilled merchant, bartering with the people of Skypiea, exchanging rubber bands for dials. He also enjoyed great success with the people of Wano, who bought his oils.

When he goes undercover as a toad oil salesman in Waland, he is an effective salesman, cutting off his arm and then applying toad oil to instantly heal the wound. He plays this salesman role by resorting to scams to sell his products, cutting his arm with a blade soaked in fake blood to make it look like he has cut his arm, then applying oil to his uninjured arm, convincing others that the oil has healed the wound.

He is also capable, even in spite of himself, of passing himself off as a powerful warrior through misunderstanding, as during the liberation of Sugar's slaves in Dressrosa, which was not done voluntarily and where he became a god to them, now nicknamed "God". Usopp. During the Raid on Onigashima, during the Wano Country Arc, Usopp takes advantage of Linlin's Kings Haki to make it appear to be his own and make the enemies switch sides and put them under his command. Despite this, he can be deceived, as when Perona makes him believe that she can crush his heart in her astral form.

As you can see, Usopp is a pretty skilled liar, but what bothers us here is: why does he do this? Why does Usopp lie? Well, the answer to that question has never been directly revealed, but given that Usopp's lies are basically one of his "powers," we assume he had to do it to get by.

He wasn't a fighter; he wasn't even particularly brave, and since he lived in a very harsh world, Usopp had to resort to other means to survive, and lying seems to be a shining example of this. Of course, there's the story that he kept lying about a pirate raid because he secretly hoped his father would come to see him, but his other lies have absolutely no bearing on that.

It also allowed him to earn a living, as the junk he sold definitely improved his financial situation.
