What Does the Initial "D." Stand For in One Piece? Explained!

The legend of One Piece and One Piece also begins with the famous pirate king, Gol D. Roger. And even though many have tried to do so, Monkey D. Luffy seems to be the one destined to repeat Roger's legacy. If you've been observant enough, you've probably noticed that both of these characters have the initial D in their names, even though they're not related. Have you ever wondered what the "D" stands for? In this article, we'll explain what the so-called Will of D is in One Piece and what it actually represents.

The Will of God is a term for a series of characters whose names contain the initial letter D. Not much is known about this phenomenon at this time, but historically, many powerful and important characters in the series have had or still have the Will of God, including Luffy, Roger, Ace, Garp, and Blackbeard, among others. They are considered the "natural enemies of God."

The rest of this article will expand further on what we wrote above about the phenomenon called the Will of D. We'll explain what it is, how it manifests, how it's perceived, and who owns the initial. You'll also discover what it might mean, as it's not yet known what the initial "D" actually stands for.

What is D.'s will in One Piece?

In the One Piece universe, some people, Pirates, Revolutionaries, or Marines, bear the initial "D." This mysterious initial is borne by members of the D clan. It is impossible to know the significance of the shared middle initial, but it seems that all share a similar faith in their own dreams. "D." could therefore correspond to "Dream"; also, bearers of the "D." seem to be able to withstand incredible punishments in battle and only surrender to death when they know there is no way to avoid it. "D" could therefore also mean "Destiny."

In Oda's SBS Volume 8 Q&A, he was asked what the "D" in Luffy's name meant. Oda simply replied that it was a "D" for now and that he plans to reveal the truth about it when the time comes. This was the first time Luffy's "D" was mentioned, and Oda's clue leads to a bigger mystery.

The "D". is mentioned by Kureha once, and then by Nico Robin in Alabasta, who says she was saved twice by people who had the initial "D". in their names. The people in question are Jaguar D. Saul and Monkey D. Luffy. All bearers of the "D". die smiling (as seen in the cases of Gol D. Roger, Jaguar D. Saul, Portgas D. Ace and even Portgas D. Rouge after giving birth). Similarly, Luffy, believing he was going to die in Loguetown, because of Buggy wanting to guillotine him, had a big smile, which disturbed Smoker who had witnessed, in the same place, the execution of the pirate king who had the same smile while dying.

The "D." also stands for "Danger," according to the members of the Five Elders, or in some way, the bearers of the "D." represent danger, given that a large number of troublemakers, from the World Government's perspective, have this letter in their names. According to Trafalgar D. Law, himself a bearer of the "D.", the "D." will cause a tidal wave in this world. Shortly after the Battle of Marineford, the Five Elders say that the "D." has been attracting attention lately and should be watched out for.

Don Quixote Rosinante will later provide us with more information about the Will of D. In his homeland, Marie Geoise, it is said that if a child is naughty, a "D." will eat him. The elders of his clan say that as soon as a "D." makes itself known, it will cause another storm. Trafalgar, listening to this with fear, asks if this means he is a monster; Corazon replies that no one knows the truth. "D." may therefore be the equivalent of "Demon," since it serves as a scarecrow in some legends.

Furthermore, according to the story told by Rosinante, some people in the world have secretly inherited this letter and these people belong to the "D" clan. They are called "Natural Enemies of God" by the Celestial Dragons, who are considered "Gods". At the end of the Dressrosa arc, Law and Sengoku talk and the latter tells Sengoku that he is a "D" and asks him what it means; Sengoku replies that "D"s have the strangest destiny.

It can also be recalled that during Robin's flashback, Olvia crosses paths with Jaguar D. Saul and asks him what he is doing there, to which he replies that it must be fate. Whitebeard, shortly before dying, reveals some information about this mysterious "D." also, which he knows thanks to Roger himself. According to Newgate, bearers of the initial can transmit their will through time, stating that just as some people inherited Roger's "D," others will inherit Ace's. It can also be noted that Nico Robin was rescued by Jaguar D. Saul on the island of Ohara, who orders her to live and find friends at sea. Currently, she is still part of the Straw Hat Pirates; this is interpreted as proof that the giant had transmitted his will to them beyond death.

In fact, even Sengoku was shocked to hear this, as if it could actually happen. In the story, the manga provides important clues about the "D" and its role. Indeed, behind the legend of this letter could, in fact, hide a secret that could shake the world. Dr. Kureha was the first person in the manga to notice the letter "D" in Monkey D. Luffy; she seems to be aware of the connection with Gol D. Roger and announces that he will be a very dangerous person. Robin is the second person to mention this letter, as we said.

She has always sought answers about this by asking Luffy, Jaguar D. Saul, and Silvers Rayleigh what the meaning of "D" is, but no one has actually provided her with an answer, making the mystery even more intriguing as time goes on. After discovering Roger's message written on a Poneglyph, she is convinced that Luffy will have a very big impact on the world's future changes. Law is the third person to come up with the initial "D," affirming his trust in Luffy and revealing to Donquixote Doflamingo that the "D" will bring about great upheavals that will one day wreak havoc on the world.

History shows that the "D." has contributed to the creation of important consequences both historically and politically. Throughout history, we notice that the "D." always goes to certain specific places during major events (e.g.: Loguetown on East Blue; Baterilla on South Blue; Drum, Alabasta, Water Seven, Skypiea, Sabaody, Impel Down, Marineford, Fishman Island and Dressrosa on Grand Line).

In the past, Roger knew of the connection between the Will of D. and the Void Age and passed the information on to Whitebeard before his death. He says the legend of this letter dates back to a very ancient past, perhaps connected to the Great Kingdom. Edward Newgate has since understood that when people bearing the "D." and their lineage die, then other "D."s and their successors are destined to inherit their will. Indeed, the Pirate King's lineage is extinguished but symbolically still burns despite the extinction of this lineage deemed cursed.

There are people who have inherited Roger's "will," and other people will inherit Ace's, as Whitebeard himself explained. According to the prediction, a person whose coming has been foretold for generations will be designated as the custodian of his wishes (by exercising the "D.") and will provide proof of "the history of the empty centuries" as his heir. Carrying the burden of this discovery, he will rise up against the entire world to challenge it in a "struggle predicted since ancient times." One day, a gigantic war will break out on a global scale, in a merciless fight. Whitebeard ends with one of his last lines: "One Piece exists!" which proves that there is a connection between this legend and the mysterious treasure. This is all we know on this subject, as Oda hasn't revealed much, but we eagerly await new information as it comes to us.
