Rebuild of Evangelion: Evangelion: 3.0+1.0 Movie
Evangelion: 3.0+1.0 is the fourth and final installment in the Rebuild of Evangelion film series. This series acts as a recreation of Neon Genesis Evangelion. The story unfolds on a fundamental level and presents major differences from the original, both in terms of story, characters, and development.
Unlike the television series (animated by GAINAX ), the Rebuild series is animated by Studio Khara , an animation studio founded by Evangelion Director Anno Hideaki in 2006. In addition to Anno, Yoshiyuki Sadamoto provided the character designs and Ikuto Yamashita created the mecha design. The film also included new 3D CG technology that was not present in the previous films.
This film is currently still in production and is scheduled for release on June 27, 2020.
Development
Since the release of *Evangelion 3.0, You Can't Redo It* , very little news regarding the development of 3.0+1.0 has been announced. The official Evangelion website archive lists a potential release date of 2013, but this was changed shortly after 3.0 's release. Probably the biggest news from the production and development came in the form of an interview with Anno Hideaki regarding Godzilla: Resurgence (None Godzilla Shin ), which he was set to direct. In the interview, Anno apologizes to his Evangelion fans, saying, "First of all, I would like to apologize. I've kept you waiting for the new Evangelion for a very, very long time. I am deeply sorry." He goes on to say that Evangelion is in some ways a part of his soul, and working on it was like tearing a piece of his soul away little by little. After doing this for so long, he left to the point of having nothing left to give. While working on another project, Anno thought he could return to Evangelion once more. An event called Operation 0706 was held at Japan Expo in Paris, which showcased the film's opening scene. Eventually, on December 27, 2019, the film's release date would finally be confirmed as June 27, 2020.
Operation 0706
On June 24, 2019, Toei announced that the first ten minutes of 3.0+1.0 (called Before 1) would be screened at Japan Expo in France, Anime Expo in Los Angeles, and various other venues on July 6. An app titled EVA-EXTRA was also released on July 1 of the same year, providing information about the event and other news about the Evangelion franchise in general.
Summary of Before 1
The opening scene begins in a blood-red Paris, with the Eiffel Tower prominently visible in the background. Ritsuko , Maya , and a handful of other WILLE members attempt to activate what they call an "Anti-L System." The concept of an "L Barrier" is mentioned by Asuka at the end of 3.0 You Can't Redo , but the details behind it are unknown at this point.
As the group continues to activate the system, they are attacked by a group of "44A" units, and Mari is tasked with destroying them or holding them off with Evangelion Unit 08 while they continue working. Once these units are eliminated, a "4444C" unit appears behind a cloaking system with numerous "44B" units. The 4444C unit is equipped with a positron rifle, while the 44Bs act as generators for the rifle. The positron rifle is fired, but the group manages to block the incoming blast, though they are now unable to block a second one. Mari charges from the top of the Eiffel Tower in an attempt to prevent a second blast and, with the help of a diversion from WILLE, succeeds. With the threat of an enemy attack no longer present, the Anti-L system activation ends, and the blood-red landscape returns to its state before the third and fourth impacts. Many buildings begin to rise from the ground, and it is revealed that these structures contain Evangelion parts and weapons, which would greatly aid in the maintenance of Evangelion Unit 08 and Evangelion Unit 02. The scene ends with Mari saying that she will find Shinji again.
Trailers
In the teasers and trailers currently available for the Rebuild 3.0+1.0 movie, a new Evangelion can be seen. Evangelion Unit 8+2 appears with a half-red and half-pink color scheme, and is seen fighting a large number of dark green Evangelion Mark 06 units with a sword resembling the Magorox. The pilot at the time is Mari, but with the color scheme, there are rumors that Evangelion Unit 8+2 could be another dual-input unit, like the same as Evangelion Unit 13. However, this is not confirmed at this time.
With the 26-episode Evangelion anime series joining Netflix's lineup in 2019, the Evangelion franchise has recently received more attention ahead of the release of the fourth and final film in the Rebuild series.
