Rebuild of Evangelion: Evangelion: 3.0 You Can (Not) Redo Movie

Evangelion: 3.0 You Can't Remake It is the third of four films in the Rebuild of Evangelion series. This series acts as a recreation of Neon Genesis Evangelion. The story unfolds on a fundamental level and presents major differences from the original, both in terms of story, characters, and development.

3.0 is the first film to feature a completely original story that isn't based on the original series. It takes place 14 years after the end of the previous film, leading to locations and characters that evolve significantly differently from what was previously shown.

Unlike the television series (animated by GAINAX ), the Rebuild series is animated by Studio Khara , an animation studio founded by Evangelion Director Anno Hideaki in 2006. In addition to Anno, Yoshiyuki Sadamoto provided the character designs and Ikuto Yamashita created the mecha design. The film also included new 3D CG technology that was not present in the previous films.

This film was first released on November 17, 2012.

Summary

Asuka and Mari are sent on a mission into space to retrieve a high-priority target and are attacked by several Angel -like enemies. Asuka manages to capture the target, but discovers that another enemy has hidden on it. Asuka calls Shinji for help and, to her surprise, Evangelion Unit 01 is inside the target and fires a laser that destroys the enemy.

Shinji later awakens and is interrogated by a previously unseen figure: Toji's younger sister, Sakura Suzuhara. After a medical examination, he is taken to the command center of WILLE, a new anti-NERV organization led by Misato that formed after the events of Near-Third Impact. He notices everyone staring at him, but he is still able to recognize Misato. Unable to fully comprehend the situation, Shinji begins to grab a collar around his neck, which Ritsuko calls a DSS choker. It is later revealed that the choker was placed on Shinji because they wanted to prevent him from piloting another Evangelion unit and causing another Impact. Everyone feels a strong disgust towards Shinji, as he was the cause of Near-Third Impact. Ritsuko (now WILLE's vice-captain) begins to explain some of what has happened over the past 14 years.
Asuka also appears, but only to charge at him, punch him, and break the glass separating them. Shinji asks where Roi is, to which Ritsuko replies, "She doesn't exist anymore." Another enemy appears, and Shinji hears Rei's voice in his head. Surprised, he calls out to her, and a modified version of Evangelion's Unit 00 bursts into the room and frees Shinji. Misato attempts to activate the DSS choke collar to kill Shinji, but she is unsuccessful, and Shinji escapes.

Shinji wakes up in the ruins of NERV. There, he finds Kaworu. They play piano and eventually perform a duet together. They quickly become friends and begin to rely on each other. Later, Shinji asks Kaworu what happened to Tokyo-3 and his friends, and Kaworu shows him what remains of the world he destroyed. Shinji says he only wanted to save Rei, but he ended up causing incredible destruction in the process. Somehow, Kaworu manages to remove Shinji's DSS collar and places it around his own neck. Later, a new Evangelion Unit 13 is completed and is revealed to have a dual piloting system designed for Shinji and Kaworu to pilot together. Shinji is hesitant, as piloting Evangelion Units has brought him nothing but misfortune. A plan to restore the world to its previous state is proposed by Kaworu, which gives Shinji the motivation to pilot the Eva.

The two begin their descent into the depths of NERV to retrieve the Spear of Longinus and the Spear of Cassius, which are believed to be the key to making this plan work. Evangelion Unit 02 and Evangelion Unit 08 attempt to stop the two from retrieving the Spears, but are unsuccessful. However, upon their arrival, Kaworu discovers that there are two Spears of Longinus, which derails their plan. Shinji, perhaps a little too eager to make amends for his past mistakes, begins removing the Spears on his own, despite Kaworu's warnings. The Twelfth Angel appears, and Kaworu realizes he has become the Thirteenth Angel. Evangelion Unit 13 absorbs the Twelfth Angel and begins to Awaken. Kaworu notices that the Fourth Impact has begun, and Shinji realizes that once again, he is the cause. Kaworu's DSS collar begins to activate, and in his final words, Kaworu tells Shinji that he is not at fault and that they will meet again. Mari also manually ejects Shinji from Evangelion Unit 13 and prevents Fourth Impact from progressing further. Later, Asuka finds Shinji's entry plug and pulls him out. Rei appears nearby, and the three begin walking together across the barren, red-stained landscape.
