Reinhard van Astrea is a member of the Lugnica Royal Guard and is a personal knight for Felt . He is also the current heir to the title of Sword Saint. He has short red hair and blue eyes. He wears a modified version of the Lugnica Royal Guard uniform, even when not on active duty.
Personality
Reinhard is known as the "knight among knights" due to his bravery, kindness, and strong sense of justice. He only uses his sword when absolutely necessary, as he doesn't believe it's morally right to harm a normal person unless necessary. Reinhard tries to maintain his good-natured exterior and is easily offended when people suggest he's dangerous due to his immense power. He always tries to resolve conflicts without resorting to violence, often giving his enemies the chance to surrender so he doesn't have to kill them.
History
Reinhard is the grandson of Wilhelm van Astrea and Theresia van Astrea. He inherited the powers and title of Sword Saint at the age of five. Theresia died because of this, having lost her Sword Saint powers while fighting the Hakugei. Wilhelm blames Reinhard for his wife's death because of this.
Reinhard later joins the Lugnican Royal Guard, where he meets Julius and Felix.
Six months before the events of Arc 1, Reinhard traveled with Julius and Felix to Vollachia to meet with the current Emperor of Vollachia, Vincent Vollachia. While in Vollachia, Reinhard successfully thwarted Balroy Temeglyph and Gramdart Holstoy's attempted coup.
Relationships
Felt - As Felt's personal knight, Reinhard is willing to do whatever he can to help Felt win the royal election.
Subaru Natsuki - Reinhard and Subaru are friendly towards each other, with Subaru even boasting to the Sin Witches that he personally knows the current Sword Saint.
Theresa of Astrea - Reinhard was very close to Theresia before her death, and he was very upset when he heard the news of her death. He seems to have accepted her death, however, as he does not hesitate to kill her when she is resurrected by the Witch Cult.
William of Astrea - Wilhelm and Reinhard do not get along well, as Wilhelm blames Reinhard for Theresia's death at the hands of the Hakugei. However, Wilhelm attempts to mend their relationship after defeating the Hakugei. Wilhelm later changes his mind after seeing Reinhard show no remorse in killing Theresia's resurrected corpse. Wilhelm begins addressing Reinhard by his full name after this, indicating that he no longer has a personal relationship with Reinhard.
SKILLS
Divine Protection - Reinhard is able to possess any divine protection he wishes, without any limitations. Some of the abilities granted by these divine protections include being stronger at certain times and in certain weather conditions, mastery of all weapons and fighting styles, and the ability to communicate telepathically. He also inherited a unique divine protection, the Sword Saint's Divine Protection, which brings out his peak martial skills, greatly increasing his combat capabilities.
Malfunctioning Gate - Reinhard's gate cannot release the mana stored in his body, preventing him from releasing mana to use magic. However, he has a very high mana capacity, allowing him to absorb large amounts of mana without harming himself. He can use this mana to enhance his physical abilities. He is also able to prevent others from using magic if he absorbs all the mana around them.
Pseudo-Spiritual Affinity - Reinhard attracts the attention of lesser spirits, who attempt to heal him if he is injured.
Reid, the Dragon Sword - As the current Sword Saint, Reinhard is able to wield the Dragon Sword Reid, an incredibly powerful weapon. The Dragon Sword Reid can only be unsheathed against opponents he deems worthy. Reinhard has only been shown using this weapon twice, the first time against Cecilus Segmunt, and the second time against the resurrected corpse of Theresia van Astrea. The sword's scabbard is also very durable, as it was able to withstand the force of Regulated Corneas None Authority of Greed.
